THE PASSION TO PURSUE: WHAT IS DRIVING YOUR CAREER GOALS

your passion

In my life, I had plenty of things that I was good at, but not a lot of things that I was passionate about. That was until my senior year in undergraduate school when I started to write my first screenplay. For personal reasons I found that writing was a way to shift how I felt into something outside of myself. But it wasn’t until my mid 20’s when I decided to embark on a career pursuit to become a writer as a career. That quickly became filmmaking and now has opened into photography as well. I never had any interest in the arts outside of listening to music and watching television. The thought of filmmaking, becoming an author, and photography was not on my radar by a long shot.

wanting to give up

If you have never been down this road of wondering what the hell am I doing, then you are definitely not truly pursuing the dream. Meaning, no matter how much you love what you do, there is something internally telling you to run and run fast. That is not only fear talking, but it’s nature. Nature has placed that inside of man because it is what has aided in our survival as a species for so many thousands of years. And for most people, they listen to that inner voice and run to what is safe and makes sense. Then there are the people who jump out there and take the risk. They fail and they fail until they succeed. It is something that so many people admire about them; that fearlessness. But even the most fearless question their abilities at times.

getting good

Everyone is so convinced that we are these amazing creatures. We think and feel that just because we are endowed with a conscious it means something. Which is why it’s hard to be honest and admit when we are good or bad at something we love. Now, what’s interesting is that we can be better if we are honest with our current status. But so many can’t get to the point of improving because they are stuck on the fact that you criticized their work. And that criticism is needed; as long as the person giving the criticism knows what they’re talking about. There is no real way to describe it, you just know when it’s right and when it’s not. What’s sad is that not everyone gets that internal response from nature.

INVEST IN YOUR FUTURE: PUTTING UP DOLLARS TO BUILD YOUR DREAM

Finance Sketch Near Laptop Computer

“Put your money where your mouth is.”

put up

A lot of times when we need to build our careers, it takes financing. Financing that the average person does not have in their pockets. So what do you do when you need the money to get started. For me, I have an interest in filmmaking, writing, and photography. So my initial investment in writing is cheaper than filmmaking and photography. Filmmaking and photography are both expensive, so you have to start with small investments. Or, you could try saving up over a long period of time. Then again, there is the reaching out to family and friends, or trying to crowd fund, or trying to get grant money, or a loan, or contest. So as you can see, you have to look under every rock for resources.

how to start

Everyone needs to have a start in life. For me I started writing at the age of 23 years old. I am now 7 years into the writing experience of the novel and screenwriting process. I started filmmaking at the age of 26 and photography in the past 1 year. I started writing with Microsoft word on the school’s computers and eventually bought myself a laptop. But raised funding for my short film through Indiegogo website. I also just so happen had a refund from grad school and bought a starter camera. Since then I bought a prime lens. And now I am taking more and more photos while also writing my first book and self-publishing it.

next step

From the previous passage, you have to now take it a step further by growing your audience in whatever it is you’re doing. For me, I have my social media platforms that I have invested a lot of time and energy. And yet, it is still a work in progress. This is a growth stage that seems to be going nowhere, because in the paradigm there is no movement. You are up and then back down. But over time you start to see the results. Results that typically take years to accomplish.

living life is more important

The reason so many can’t save money is not because of bills. But it’s actually because they want to live their lives. People want new clothes, a car note, and date. And who can blame them, but you now have to be willing to sacrifice your dreams. Because in the building stages, there is no room for both. You have to put these types of things on hold for something much greater.

SELF-EMPLOYED: IT SOUNDS MORE FUN THAN IT REALLY IS IN LIFE

Woman Wearing Earpiece Using White Laptop Computer

“Nothing moves if you don’t move.”

working for self

Working for yourself sounds good until you have to actually make things happen to bring in an income. The only thing we think about is the lack of boss and making our own hours. You don’t realize you’ll be working longer hours, with fewer days off. Not mention when you first start, you have to continue to work your day job until you get on your feet financially. And that is a process that can take years to be able perform. And here is where the majority of people give up. The idea of working for self sounds good, but not as fun as you thought it would be.

what to do

Most people who says they want to work for self have no clue what it is they want to do. Hell, some people continuously change their passion over and over again. And what happens in this regard is that you never find your home. You stay jumping around from job to job. So, in order to find what you like, try it out. Fall in love with the thing that you want to do. Because once you fall in love with it, you’ll eventually become great at it. Then you will start to generate an income later.

the fall

Everything you try will have a degree of failure. No matter good you think you are, you will fall. Why, well it’s because you’re a novice. In order to get good, you have to keep doing it and failing and keep doing it and failing. Some people might ask, when do I get it; well, it’s called, when it happens. There is no date on your success in life. You have to just sit back let the process take time. It’s like my blog you’re reading. I have been writing for the blog since August of 2015. I have found a lot of my voice, but the initial points were just writing, trying to find my voice. Once you find it, it’s impossible to lose, as long as continue to work.

AGE OF PURSUIT: WHEN SHOULD YOU EMBARK ON A CAREER

3 Women in Suit Sitting

“When should I start?”

the start

When you are first entering life, the question looms, “What should I do with my life?” And the answer to that takes time for so many looking to succeed in this world. But when is the best time to pursue your career? Because the quick and easy answer is to say right out of college. But most young people have no clue what they want to do with their lives. And for the few that do, they are usually like myself at the age of 23/24 years. And I would say I got truly serious about the age of 25 years. Now that I am about to be 31 years old, I have made considerable progress. But how do you find that path to starting your career? First you have to make sure you know your strengths and weaknesses before starting. Then find something you love and are good at before pursuing. The reason you have to love it is because you will go years without making money.

the paradigm

Along the path to success, you are going to find yourself feeling so bored and restless. You will think that what you are doing is for nothing because the success takes so much time. And most will give up at this point and take what is given to them. Because most people are not wired to continuously deal with lose after lose after lose and still be left standing. So don’t be stressed out by the fact that you are not moving much in life. You are experiencing little successes so you are progressing. For me, I like to add to my personal website milestone news updates just so when I look back I can see that historical progression. This way, there is a trail to allow me to see how much I changed what I changed about myself to grow.

serendipity

You will have these euphoric moments where information will start to come together and things will just make sense. And from that everything you do will do and plan on doing will be crystal clear. It makes you sit back and wonder, like, “Oh, this is how our descent ancestors navigated the Earth.” We were able to figure things out, and harness parts of our minds that we didn’t know we could. And over time that growth has led to our vast productivity. No one really has an “Ah Ha” for real in life with no work. The “Ah Ha” is from time put in which leads to these types of moments.

LIMITED INTEREST: WHAT TO PURSUE WHEN YOU LACK SKILLS

design, desk, display

“I wish I had the it.”

finding talent

All of us have some sort of hidden talent whether we know it or not. And it’s all about unlocking that skill. Now most people will go to work everyday, and never realize their skill. So what do you do when you have limited interest and you have limited skills to become successful in life. You want to do all these great things, but you don’t which way to turn or how to get there. That’s why it’s good to prepare and start off when you’re young, so this doesn’t trail you all through life.

try things

Before I chose to pursue writing as a career interest and now photography, I tried other things. You have to try law, engineering, science, and even general business. And when I say try, I mean you don’t have to dive in full force. There are aspects about each that I looked at and said, “no, this doesn’t fit.” Then I started to write and realized I liked writing screenplays and books. I realized I like photography and filmmaking. And that liking became a career pursuit. So you have to be willing to put yourself in harms way to allow things to formulate.

get a job

Work until you figure something out. But while in the work, try not to get discouraged by the daily grind. Because after all, you have to survive in the world. We have goals and dreams and passions. But you must live from day to day. Just don’t get distracted by the day to day life. Everything becomes so routine that you don’t even think about living anymore. So the days turn to weeks, then months, and before you know it years have gone. And through it all, you still haven’t found your passion.

SET OUT TO SUCCEED, PLAN TO FAIL: WHY MOST DON’T MAKE THEIR DREAMS A REALITY

Portrait of Young Man

“Want it, go get it, it won’t come to you.”

People in society have this ideology that they want something and it’s supposed to come to them. And I don’t mean the idea of sitting around and doing nothing. I’m talking there are people who say that I go to work everyday. Shouldn’t that put them into a position to be where they want to be in life? And my reply to that would be no. You might be thinking why not, you work hard, why aren’t things coming to you? Well, believe it or not, just going to work everyday and coming home does not put you in a place of advancing. You have to do more to get more out of life. What does that mean? It simply means that you have to put yourself more in the know of where you want to be in life. For example, if you want to advance in the medical field, you don’t just come to work and be a doctor. You should be reading up on medical periodicals and contributing to publications.

That might sound odd, but it’s what you have to do. That is what is meant by putting yourself in the know. Going to work everyday does not make you an expert at your profession. It only makes you an expert at your task. Meaning, while I pursue a career as a writer, filmmaker, and photographer, I work in retail. So, on a daily basis, my job is to do a lot of mundane work that anyone can accomplish. Who don’t know how to fold a t-shirt, tape up a box, or ask customers what items they need. But it pays the bills momentarily, all the while I work outside on my writing craft. If I wanted to advance in the company that I work for, I could not just fold t-shirts. I have to find a way for the organization to maximize its profits while saving them the most amount of money. And that is how you move into a place where you want to progress forward.

Well, that sounds simple right, no. There is a lot of time that must be spent in order to move in the direction of your big break. And when I say time, I am talking about years. How many people are willing to take years out of their lives to build their career. When I moved to New York City, I put myself on a time table of ten years to break into my career as a screenwriter. Along the way, I wanted to standout by showing I could make my own film, write and self publish a book, start two blogs; all with the aspirations of being great at what I do. So that when I finally do reach out for representation, I can say I have been doing this and this and that over time. Just saying I want to do something and it’s supposed to come to me is not enough. You’re not special, maybe to your parents, but not to the general public. They didn’t procreate to birth you or raise you. Hell, they don’t care if you succeed or fail.

Because in the end, the quote I always live by, “No one has a stake in interest in you being successful except for you.” I hate using cliches like “grab the bull by the horns” or “good things come to those who wait.” If you want something to be, you have to think it up into existence. That doesn’t mean to literally think it and it happens. But through every project you work on, it should amount to a small battle that ultimately leads to you winning the war, type of outlook on life.

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR OF SUCCESS: WHY YOU SHOULD KEEP FIGHTING

abstract, architecture, art

“Don’t walk away when success is on the other side.”

For the past 6.5 years I have been writing my screenplays, with the hopes of securing an agent. Now that I have more of a handle on my writing, I want to pursue an agent in the year 2018. But what I don’t want to do is quit when I am so close to doing what it is I want to do in life. I always remember the quote from Thomas Edison, “Many of life’s failures didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” I have used this quote in other prior posts as well. And that feeling that so many people get when they stop pursuing and see others doing what they wanted to do. It hurts because it makes them realize how they might have been able to win if they stuck it out. But instead they ran away because it became far too tough to continue. And why do so many stop short of their dreams in life.

Usually people stop pursuing because they are getting older and older and start to see their lives slipping away from them. They are pumped about their dream job at 20 years old, then 25 comes and they’re still pumped. But once 30 years of age hits, they start to get that feeling of it hasn’t happened by now. That feeling that everyone else is going on in life without you, but you are still dragging along. I myself, am 30 years old pursuing screenwriting/filmmaking and as a novelist, but I work retail and as an usher. Most people I know have already gotten married and started having children. But me, I am single and have no children; and from the looks of things, I won’t be having children and dating anytime soon. And in a life that is long, why do we have these ways of seeing the world as over at such a young age? It’s because we are on a clock that society has stated you should be doing certain things by a certain age.

But then again, why should we be doing certain things? What if you’re like me and don’t want to get married or have children? You tend to look at society from a totally different standpoint. To you, life is long and you have years to focus on building a family. Yet to those living by the societal standard, they must be married by a certain point, have children, have a career. And the question states, why? There is no scientific proof of the world not spinning on its axis if you don’t live your life by certain standards. I’s because we want to be accepted, even if it’s at the cost of not being happy. We would much rather exist in a world where we’re unhappy and fit the societal standard than to be dangerous on the outside of it. And in the end, that’s why we fall short of our success. We want to satisfy others and not ourselves. We want to fit into a group not build on something we love. It’s a lot of group think in order to be with the pack. And people want the group acceptance.
