A WHOLE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN: GROWING UP BLACK IN A WHITE HOUSEHOLD

“The struggle is real.”

a home is a home

When you are child, no matter what the household you grow up in, a home is a home. But what happens when you are as child that is adopted into a house where the parents are of another ethnicity? What are some of the challenges that the kid face when growing up in the house? They don’t understand anything about their surroundings. To them, this is their parents, but they will soon realize that there is something different than others kids lives. And looking into the mirror they soon realize the difference. And that’s when the questions arise.

black in white world

As a Black kid in a White household, you are cared for and loved like their own child. The moment you step outside, you start to quickly see the world around you. And when you step out with mom and dad, then you start to see the stares. And the treatment once you start making friends and especially dating presents a whole new challenge. How do White parents sit their Black child down and explain racism to the kid? Because Black parents are ready to have that conversation, but I don’t know how many White parents even think about racism in regards to raising a child. But they have to eventually have that conversation.

internal struggle

What is going through the minds on a daily for the Black kid? What are they struggling with that makes them have a different perspective on the world? Because like every other kid that is raised by someone of their ethnicity, they are able to attach themselves to a reality most Black kids don’t. Their adoptive family is being presented a child from a group that would normally not be in their family. And they are witnessing that it is not a group where you come from, but an upbringing that makes people who they are outside the social construct of America. But I also want to know what is the detachment from other Black people that you don’t feel, that you wished you did have? Because color and our experiences to a degree connect. But growing up in a White house can make you have separate similar experiences in life.

THE DAY OF RECKONING: WILL BLACK PEOPLE EVER GET TO A PLACE PEACE AND PROSPERITY

african american guy, african american man, black guy

“Eventually one day.”

a rough history

Throughout history, the Black population has been a group that has taken a hard punch. But will there ever come a time where it does not exist? Will this large time period 500 years from now, 1,000 years from now be something we look back on and say to ourselves, “How did our ancestors get through it all?” Because I am a strong person, but there are limits to everybody. So what, if any, are the steps we must take within our own community to move past the point of discrimination? Because we are not going to get this entire coming of the minds from another group. So how do we move on going into the future?

shift perception

The idea and expectations for the community must be directed into another path. We are always allowing ourselves to be seen through the lens of another group. Develop a new way of style, talk, viewpoint, that is indicative of who we are. Because no other group has any vested interest in us doing anything with our lives. So the first step is radiating what is special and internal outward about yourself.Once the perception of self changes it is then on to other changes.

tap into skills

When you look at sports and entertainment, the highest ranked people are generally Black people. But what about other areas of interest. What about the Lebron James of the tech industry or the Beyonce of the medical field. We don’t have any global trotters at this moment. We need individuals that are the thinkers in various fields of study. These are the people that impact the next generation like the athletes and entertainers. But the learned of a group of people must stand an express themselves for their natural abilities.

lose the fear

We love to stand out, but fear being free. But as Black people, fear and success can’t occupy the same space. There must be a fearless vigilance for our group. Stand up proud to be smart, intelligent, and productive. And push heavy for what is yours. And when people call you arrogant, go harder. Enough of the days when you refuse to raise your hand in class so as to not appear like a know it all, but also afraid to be wrong. We have to stand and show out; in the most positive way.

I’M DEFEATED: WHEN THE SOCIAL TENSION BECOMES TOO MUCH

Image result for RACIAL PROTEST

“Too much to keep fighting.”

i’m exhausted

For the past few centuries there have been social strife in America. From Native Americans losing rights and fighting for justice, to African Americans, Women’s rights, Hispanic, and members of the LGBT community. But the issues sometimes can make you feel a little worn out. And that is the point where so many people tap out of the game. We tap out and say I can’t do this anymore. We should just remain separate from each other. But if there are not the people who do fight, then how do some many people get and retain their rights.  Yet the constant fighting does make you ignore a lot in our society.

when you give in

You would think that with so many people willing to not fight things in society would kind of progress. But not without putting up a fight in our country. And that is why to a degree you cannot stop fighting. Because the reason why society has not reached its full potential is because we get a place of comfort. We never want to change things without force since the change is so new and not guaranteed. The same old same is what has worked, but the new is so vulnerable. But there is always a generation pushing for things to change and to counter attack is a group that is used to things being a certain way. And usually when things are a certain way, it only benefits a chosen few. And rest have to deal with whatever they get in life.

does it ever stop

I wonder will there ever come a time where people just exist in a space of existence. The sad reality is that as long as there is a group that feels underrepresented and pushed out there will be tension. But the reality is there will always be a group. Not just because of the inequality, it’s the numbers of are society. You are just going to have this segment, as well as a group that deviates from the norm. My only concern is what will be the next major fight in America? We have seen income disparities, race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation. But we have yet to have a major fight in this country over relationships. What will happen when we finally start to challenge marriage? How will that effect dating and marriage in this country? Maybe people will fight what marriage is in America? Because people themselves need a reason to push back against something, no matter how mundane.

WHEN THEY’RE BROUGHT INTO THE WORLD: CHILDREN OF INTERRACIAL RELATIONSHIPS AND THEIR STRUGGLES

Related image

“Yanked in both directions.”

the struggle is real

When growing up in the United States as a biracial child, you are sometimes stuck between the two worlds of the racial game. You are too White for the Black kids and two Black for the White kids. So you have to sway over time between the two groups until you become an adult and learn to have an identity for yourself. But until that point there is constant struggle after struggle. From the Black kids saying you think you’re better because you’re lighter to the White kids who know you’re of melanin because of the parent in your household.

when a nation is divided

Anytime there is strife within the country, these kids are the ones typically stuck in the middle of the argument. Because you’re growing up in the house with both parents that usually in America are reflected of the bickering in society. And I am not referring to a divide with any other group outside of Black and White in America because their history in this country does not run as deep. You almost feel like an alien in the conversation because anything you say is going to come off as taking a side. So at times, the biracial kid remains quiet and hopes no one ask for their input.

it’s more than love

When choosing a mate, you have to think about the fact that you’re bringing a child into this world that will be faced with these social hardships. You have to know be comfortable with knowing the world in which you live and the child that will come into the world. Because the world is not what you want it to be, it’s what it is. And you have to prepare your child fort the world they will be entering. And for those that think otherwise, they are truly being naive. This is the reason people don’t want to have an interracial relationship because of the crazy world their child/children are entering.

WHEN THE HURT ENJOYS HURT: WHEN A GROUP THAT HAS BEEN HURT RELISH IN THE HURT NOW THEMSELVES

Grayscale Photo of a Woman Sleeping

“I want you to see what’s like to be me.”

my pain

Anyone that belongs to group of people who have had to endure a long history of pain must be careful. They must be careful because it’s very easy to slip into a role of being the one doling out the hate. And this happens since a lot of the times we become the people we have had to deal with especially if there is no culture to the people in pain. You adopt the nature of the ones that hurt you and it now becomes a situation where now you’re making the same excuses as the ones who hurt you just to have yourself a legs up.

it’s different

We always make excuses for why we treat individuals a certain way. But when it’s actually time to breakdown the thought process there is no clear and concise answer. We are so used to behaving in a certain manner and it not being questioned, that we are unprepared to answer questions. But what happens now that the shoe is on the other foot and you ask someone to state a clear idea as to why they feel a certain way. They can’t give you a reason, they’ll just say it’s different or you’re against them. But people will not have to conversation. And the reason being is because there is no logical explanation and an explanation would further expose the fact there isn’t one. So in a nutshell, I am saying to hurt dole out maybe not the equivalent, but aspects and find reasons to not say it is so.

blind to the issue

Believe it or not, there are people who don’t even see their own internalize disdain that has also been held for them. We dilute ourselves into thinking a lot of times that we are better than the people who hurt us. But we become bastardized versions of them and transfer the hate. That’s why there will always be this form of hate in society. People need a reason to say this group is responsible, then enough time goes by where that group is no longer in control. And then a new group becomes the oppressors and the oppressed.

RIGHT TO STAY OR MUST GO: THE MULTIPLES VIEWS ON IMMIGRANTS FROM MEXICO

Image result for mexican flag

“Our land as well.”

mexico

A nation that has just over 50% of the illegal immigrants that exist in America. With less than 10% coming from other places around the globe. And that is because of the proximity to the United States. And as millions have crossed the border and continue to cross the question that has people throughout the nation split on,”Who should stay and who shall go?” Because there are people who have broken the law that are in American prisons, yet the bulk came for a better way of life. Two sides: ones side states that they should go through the legal process like everyone else, while the other side states that if they are law bidding citizens, what is wrong with them staying especially since they are contributing to society.

a conservative stance

There are so many people that are on a long list awaiting the process to come to America. And that is a process which has taken so many people years. So there is this feeling by many of them who think that they have taken that long process to enter. Why should someone else be able to walk across? And the conservative viewpoint in America aligns itself with that view. Now let’s observe that perspective for a second. If I am an immigrant looking to come to America from elsewhere, it has taken me years, and not to mention money spent, what is the feeling knowing someone easily walked across. Or better yet, Americans working everyday, already seeing their employment moved to countries outside the United States, one of those places being Mexico. Now the little employment afforded to citizens is being held in the hands of some of the same countries citizens illegally entering. That viewpoint is enough to cause an outrage within a society.

a liberal stance

Now there is another perspective that exist within society. And that is that a lot of immigrants that have been deported in America recently have been in this country a long time. Some have been here decades. So to deport them would be counterproductive considering so many have been contributing to this country the entire time. A major disagreement is the sending of children back to a nation from which they have never been. It’s like taking a Sudanese kid who was born and raised here in America for the first 15 years of their life and then sending this back to the Sudan because their parents are illegal. The ethnic link exist, but America is a far cry from the Sudan. But also placing kids in what has been compared to interment camps have rubbed even conservatives in a bad way. And as far as jobs, the jobs that illegal immigrants have are jobs that a lot of Americans can’t support a family off of anyways. So what is the solution?

deep routed issues

Some of these issues go deeper than just not being in a country. You look throughout history, we are on the very foundation of Mexican land. Now, through conquest over time, that has shifted, but the sour taste that has been left in the mouths of so many runs deep. Because you’re talking the bedrock of an ethnic group’s existence is deeper routed on this land. Now they are being told once again to leave. So this will continue to be a problem as long as you have the side this is the land of our forefathers and the side of this is the new country and that was the old country.
