“How much did your career cost?”

saving toward the job

Are you interested in a career that requires you to spend a great deal of money in order to have this career? For me, I am pursuing photography and filmmaking which are two careers that require a great deal of time and money in your life. You will have to put money in, meaning growing your production equipment over time. But hopefully it is worth it when you start to make money off your equipment. Now, on the other hand, since you are business for yourself, you can finance your equipment. This is what happens when you are putting up money for your own career. Most people don’t do this, but when you are business for self, it requires your money or a loan.

when college is required

A career path requires you to pay for your chance at success would have to be Med School  and Law School. That is not to say that any other career is not important, but these are two careers you have no other choice but to go to college (California law exception). Most careers you don’t need a degree, but you have to pay for anything that is medical related. There is a must that you go through a time period where you have a specialized training process. This can take years even after you have graduated from undergraduate school. Now, for the amount of income that one makes from most of these job, it is seen as an upside to become a nurse or surgeon. But beware, you will be paying off the college debt for a long time, so start early making payments.

start small people

If you want to be successful in your career that requires you put a substantial amount of money in, then start with something simple. For example, I started with this Rebel t6i camera and a small lens. This means I can enter with at least something then as I start to get business, for me, I would finance my equipment. And then paying it off as I go along. There is nothing wrong with wanting something high end, but we all have to start somewhere.

“From the comforts of home.”

from my home office

For some time now, the idea of building a business in your home is a reality that very few in the past seen as imaginative. But more and more people are doing it. And statistics show that in the future at least half of American households will be self-employed to some degree. Rather it be full time self-employment or part time outside of their day job. And the reason for the phenomenon is that so much of work in today’s society is low pay or low hours. And the money to support a family is just not enough anymore. But are there other reason for the shift?

The power to pay yourself and work your own hours at your own pace is alluring. Not having someone over your shoulder telling you what you can do and when you can do it. Now, you have to be prepared to work long hours. But if you do manage to come out on the other side, then it’s all worth it. You’re also flexible to go off and pursue interests that you normally wouldn’t or couldn’t working 40 hours a week. And then waiting until the weekend to go out places.

it has its drawbacks

Prior I said that you are working long hours, and you are, long, long hours. And crazy thing is, there is not guarantee you’ll earn anything. So you better have it in your head this is something you really want to do. Because you are putting a lot of time an energy into something that is beyond the scope of success initially. You don’t have a boss, but it all falls on you: succeed or fail. But if you start to hire people there is another host of problem that you have to worry about. Because now, others depend on you to get the job done. So before you think about all the money you’re going to be making, understand the responsibilities that come with working for yourself.

putting together ideas

When creating your business, we all have these ideas of how I business will operate. We think about the customers and the money it can potentially make, but we don’t think about something more important. We are not thinking about putting together a comprehensive business plan. A business plan will give you more focus when trying to succeed. With this plan you are able to direct your projected path. But notice I said projected path. There is no guarantee that your business will perform well even with a plan. As a matter of fact you still might fail with the people who don’t have one. But it’s not about lumping yourself in with other people. It’s about your own success in life.

You want to finance your business, but don’t have the money. Good luck trying to procure financing without the use of a business plan. Because with the plan, people are going to want to see where the money is going that you will be raising for your business. And that plan shows a clear breakdown for the financing of a business. If I give you money, how will I get my money back on the investment. If you are not promising any return on your investment then you are not going to receive a payment to start your business. Simply because now people don’t see it as a viable stream of revenue.

anticipation of the happening

Remember I said prior that a business plan gives you the insight of what might take place; a projected course. But when things happen and you have taken all the considerations for your business, you know how to deal if problems arise. You shouldn’t be thinking about all the money you can make without thinking about all the problems that can take place. What is the saying again, “Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.” “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail.” Know what you’re getting in to, even if you don’t ever come in contact with the issues. Better to cross that bridge even though it’s there, to not, and get to the bridge and can’t cross because you didn’t take action early on.

architecture, buildings, business

“Growing it takes time; be ready.”

doors open

So many people have all these aspirations of opening their own business. But the reality of the time it takes to build is something that so many people do not want to invest in. Because in order to become successful, it’s not something you are going to open doors and do well overnight. You might be at it for five to ten or more years. Do you have the ability to stick it out for lengthy time periods to reach the life you want? I know for me from experience, I want to have a career as a screenwriter, and now that I am 6.5 to 7 years in I feel I have gotten good enough to write something that can at least attract an agent. Now the next step is selling the script, but that is my business, what about yours?

Ever been that kid in the cookie experiment where you were willing to wait for the entire pack instead of having one right now. That is what it takes to build your business, and I am currently at the point where most people give up. But you have to be in for good, it’s like joining a gang. Crazy comparison, but if you’re not in it all the way, you will fall off. You have to be 100% committed otherwise you’ll crack. And a lot of people have these entrepreneurial dreams, but they have a hard time waiting for something to happen. And that waiting game is what makes people go crazy.

Here is the part where so many people tend to fall. It’s the idea that they are not able to deal with the fall that comes with building. They are ready to go all in, but when they take a hit, it’s very hard for them to bounce back. That resilience after a failure is what you need to have to succeed in this game. Without it, you will fall off and fast. So be ready to deal with the failures that come with starting and operating your own business.

all on you

How well are you at assuming responsibility? Because when it’s all said and done, you are the person everything falls on. You are the one when people are not paid for their work will be asking where is their check. So if you have a hard time being that guy, don’t go into business. Or you better figure out a way to run a business alone, and even more is on you.

“It’s more than just the money.”

self employed

So many people, especially young people have this idea of this life they want , or seen. They can see it so vividly that they are able to literally draw out the image. But there is only one problem. And that problem is that they don’t realize the time one must put into their work to get the best results time and time again. We only see the finished product never the time put into the work. That is all the hours of putting garbage together hoping it translates into something even though we know it’s going nowhere. Then, that person sucks it up and does it again. And do it again and again until it works for them. But it’s so hard to see all this work when you have lavish lifestyle dreams. Dreams that are possible but not without the work.

blinders to reality

ow come we don’t see the hustle? Better yet, how come we don’t wan to see the hustle? We don’t want to see the work put in no merely because the work is less luxurious. We don’t want to grind because there is no guarantee. Imagine working ten years and no progress. You lose so much time that a lot of people give up. But I remember a quote by Thomas Edison, “Many of life’s failures didn’t realize how close they were to success when they finally gave up.” This quote reminds me of a photo I once saw on social media about two men pick axing for diamonds. One the guy gave up but one more swing have mad him wealthy. Now the other guy kept on swinging. That instant gratification is just not real unless you’re browsing the internet.

want it more

A lot of people say they want it. But do they really want the job of being a self made businessperson. Are you willing to get less sleep like your competition and work longer hours.  Most want it for about one month, then when six months goes by it changes. Then you have two years, then five years, and after ten years, the vast majority of the starters have fallen off. And it has nothing to do with talent. It has everything to do with sticking out the times to work.

raw skills

Now here is the part most people don’t understand, the talent. What is your skill that has you in a class of your own. People may ask, “How do you do that?” There is no real way because the brain just does, it’s hard to explain. All i can say is put the time in learning, then it becomes

adult, alone, anxious

the pursuit

When you are in the pursuit of your business career, you have to understand that everything won’t be for you. Understand that you may not have the tolerance to deal with the constant unknown. Or you might not be good enough to pursue. And in the event you’re not good, or getting good, then make a corporate decision. That decision would have to be to ditch what you are doing and get into something else. But how do you know when to ditch what you are doing? Especially if you don’t have a peer around you that can provide you with the appropriate feedback.

get the feel

How do you know you are becoming a really good cook. Well, you do it over and over and admit when it is good and admit when there are things that need to change. Once that happens, you avoid all the heartache and pain. But getting that feel requires a high level of self understanding. So many people are self congratulatory, and want to think they are more than what they are, so they lose this way. Knowing where you stand, you can understand when you’re comprehending information. Because eventually you’ll get the right feedback, and without taking the steps to understand whether you’re getting good or not, professionals in your field will rip into your work.

don’t force it

Ever try forcing a piece of a puzzle into a space? 100% guarantee you that it’s impossible to do so. Because just give up and realize the inevitable. Once you try forcing you put yourself in a place that is worse than before. And all your work was for nothing. So when you find yourself at that crossroads where you think you are not making the progress you want, then toss in the towel. But make sure you have really tried all the options that you can possibly imagine.

is it a failure

I have out myself on a ten year window to become a good enough writer to break into screenwriting/filmmaking. I have put myself on a three to five for photography. And that is rational considering the amount of competition out there in the world. So know when to give up and move on, but also know when sometimes you don’t give up, it’s just the hardship of your career goals.

business, computer, connection

“Self made, self paid.”

work for self

Working for self used to be seen as such an extreme risk. Now in the recent years, the idea of working for yourself has jumped. Being an entrepreneur is now all the rave. And with the fact that it could add even more jobs to the economy, that is a reason to be behind self employment. The only downside is that most businesses fail because people are not too savvy on keeping a business open. For whatever reason, they get ahead of themselves and start to fall apart.

traditional vs. modern

IN today’s society , you don’t even have to leave your house to work for yourself. You can now open a business from the comforts of your house and build right where you reside. But there is still room for the brick and mortar businesses that we have come to love over time. Now before I said a lot of businesses fail initially. But the ones that last, prove to be quite profitable for our society. Some even go on to be major companies that first started out as small family owned businesses (Walmart, McDonald’s)

why work for self

People are constantly stating how they are looking for work. Or that they are tired of working for their current employer and need something else. So they try at working for themselves and sometimes it works and other times it does not work. But what you must understand is that everyone is not meant to be a boss. Everyone can not delegate nor can everyone get up day in and day out and work for years on end. People are infatuated with the word self-employed. But then, when you are in the paradigm of working the task becomes a lot harder. Yet, if you are able to work around the hardships and make it out successful, you’ll prove to be an asset not only to you, but the country.
