NO THOUGHT: HOW COLLEGES NO LONGER ENCOURAGE FREE SPEECH

People Wearing Backpacks

“We used to love it.”

free speech space

Ever remember when college universities used to be places for you to harness thoughts of people that are different from yourself? Now these places of higher learning have become campuses for constantly getting you into trouble for having opposing views. Why have things changed so much on our campuses as oppose to the past? Why have our young people become so sensitive to the idea that someone may have a view that is not their own on the other side? We like to say things like, the power has shifted in the country and we also say that the media is effecting the information we receive. But the examples are only for speculation. We really don’t know for certain why things have really changed. It was something gradual that happened over time.

you’re cancelled

What is it with a generation of young people that want to cancel anyone that has a difference of opinion. This has been a cultural phenomena that has swept the nation in recent history. You have the right to say what you want and I have the right to protest it. Which ultimately means you don’t have the right to say it. And where has it come from is beyond me. Just because we don’t like something it doesn’t mean it is worthy of a protest. But nowhere is this more evident than on college campuses. A place where you are supposed to come in contact with people of varying backgrounds differences of opinion. But for some reason this younger age group want nothing to do with those that are oppose to their viewpoints.

won’t ever swing back

People always talking about how the pendulum might swing back in the opposite direction. Only problem is, that won’t happen for a view reasons. One the people on the opposite side have to be more tolerant than the younger ones, which won’t happen. But the other reason is that now that we have social media where you can openly chastise people no one want to be considered the shamed. Because who want to lose their job and be ousted publicly. So people don’t involve themselves.

TO STAND OR NOT TO STAND: THE NFL DILEMMA OR PLAYERS PROTESTING

Image result for TAKE A KNEE

“The right to do it.”

taking a knee

Over the past couple of years there has been the controversy over the former Quarterback Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem to protest against police brutality. And since then there has been protest similar throughout sports across the country and even outside the United States. So, my question is, is the protest relevant in the NFL anymore? Because since the beginning of the season, a few protest have taken place. But not much has been spoken about the matter. Maybe the protest has ran its course and they are over. Because when it happened initially, you would think it was never going to end. It was a situation that put the NFL in a very precarious position.

freedom vs feeling

In America we have the right to do a lot, but that does not mean we will all like when something is done. And that is where the idea of being able to and not wanting someone to do so clashes. Colin has the right to do so, and did so in alignment with the first amendment. But with the freedom comes the emotions of people who feel otherwise. And that is a tough position to be in because  Flag of the USAyou can’t keep someone from expressing their freedom so long as they don’t break any laws. But you cannot also expect people to like what you are doing. Yet Colin is out of a job, so what is that about? Which brings me to the next position.

right to hire or fire

Having the right to do something and an employer pushing back can put the employer in a bind. But when you have proven to force the employer to lose revenue, then it’s a different story. So once the people refused to watch causing the NFL to lose money, that’s when the right to do so stops. On the other hand, the problems that the NFL ran into was a counter-protest where they will still lose money. So it becomes a choice of lose a little or lose a lot. And they stood a chance to lose more by keeping Colin. Now the argument is, he was fighting for something he felt was a just cause, followed the law, and didn’t insight violence. True, but the people have a choice not to include themselves.

I’M DEFEATED: WHEN THE SOCIAL TENSION BECOMES TOO MUCH

Image result for RACIAL PROTEST

“Too much to keep fighting.”

i’m exhausted

For the past few centuries there have been social strife in America. From Native Americans losing rights and fighting for justice, to African Americans, Women’s rights, Hispanic, and members of the LGBT community. But the issues sometimes can make you feel a little worn out. And that is the point where so many people tap out of the game. We tap out and say I can’t do this anymore. We should just remain separate from each other. But if there are not the people who do fight, then how do some many people get and retain their rights.  Yet the constant fighting does make you ignore a lot in our society.

when you give in

You would think that with so many people willing to not fight things in society would kind of progress. But not without putting up a fight in our country. And that is why to a degree you cannot stop fighting. Because the reason why society has not reached its full potential is because we get a place of comfort. We never want to change things without force since the change is so new and not guaranteed. The same old same is what has worked, but the new is so vulnerable. But there is always a generation pushing for things to change and to counter attack is a group that is used to things being a certain way. And usually when things are a certain way, it only benefits a chosen few. And rest have to deal with whatever they get in life.

does it ever stop

I wonder will there ever come a time where people just exist in a space of existence. The sad reality is that as long as there is a group that feels underrepresented and pushed out there will be tension. But the reality is there will always be a group. Not just because of the inequality, it’s the numbers of are society. You are just going to have this segment, as well as a group that deviates from the norm. My only concern is what will be the next major fight in America? We have seen income disparities, race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation. But we have yet to have a major fight in this country over relationships. What will happen when we finally start to challenge marriage? How will that effect dating and marriage in this country? Maybe people will fight what marriage is in America? Because people themselves need a reason to push back against something, no matter how mundane.

TAKING A KNEE: WHY IS THERE STILL A STARK DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE AND BLACK SENTIMENT ON NFL PROTEST

Related image

“In protest of…..”

on one knee

Ever since former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick got down on one knee during an NFL game to protest police brutality in America during the national anthem, the anthem protest has taken on a life of its own. It has taken on such a life that we have now found ourselves back in a Black/White argument. The predominantly White side disagreeing, while the Black side agreed with the protest. So why, why are we so split. And not just on the anthem protest, but a lot of things in America. There is typically this split among Black and White citizens. A lot of times not even planned, just an organic disagreement.

numbers in one direction

The main audience for the NFL is mostly White, and of course with the population of America being mostly White. So with that said, you can understand why the NFL would want to end the anthem protest. They are doing what is in the best interest of their brand. If the mostly White audience don’t want to see it, then you will see happen what is happening which is a ban on the protesting. But on the other side, what do you think will take place in response to the ban? Because this is not going away.

counter push back

Since the issue with the protest have caused the NFL to implement new rules, how will the response be handled. Like I said, since the ruling by the NFL, as well as the President of the United States getting involved, this is far from over. Will there be a taking over by members in communities? Because if people in society form their own coalition, then there is nothing that can be done. But why must everything come down to a topic that involves a racial discussion. Because isn’t sports supposed to be a place to escape the issues of the outside world?

when competition and controversy meet

Plenty of people say keep social issues out of sports. But for the past few hundred years, this nation has been wrapped in racial relations. So everywhere you turn, there is a constant reminder of the history of our country. Whether it’s a Confederate Flag or an athlete with their fist in the air. And for so many, they tend to think sports should be sports and social issues are to be dealt with out of sports. Some even think forget social issues all together. But when you have people protesting because of police brutality, and an NFL player and NBA player are both on camera being improperly handled by police this year (Seattle Seahawk and Milwaukee Buck), the athlete says the conversation is relevant.

a difference among peoples

The reason for the relationship differences are not the media like most would want to think. It’s just how the things have been over time. There is no stopping it until a mass collective shift their perceptions of each other. But the most difficult part is that the construct of Black and White are systemic constructs. Constructs put in place a long time ago; that most say hurt our country. But the construct is almost like a glue keeping things going.

WHEN THERE’S BLOOD IN THE STREET, BUY MORE GUNS: GUNS AND ECONOMICS

Black Rifle

“Safety and security.”

the second amendment

Having the right to bare arms is a right that has been in place in the United States of America going back to the late 1700’s. Yet the amendment was revised in the year 1992, shockingly enough, revisions weren’t made really for almost two centuries. But nonetheless, we still have these rights to bare arms that was laid down by America’s fore fathers.

social over the political

The social aspects of society as it pertains to guns are far different from the political decisions. Protest erupt whenever there is an incident of a mass shooting. And the same outcome, which is nothing because so many Americans have the right to bare arms. Now, could we be seeing a rollback on a lot of the gun laws? Or maybe, just maybe will we see a new revision to the United States Constitution. Because understand, at one point in time, the Thomas machine gun was around. Now, unless you own it as an antique, it’s highly illegal.

mad money

What are the economic impacts of guns on society. Because on one hand, people don’t go out and spend money in areas where gun violence are a problem. But at the same time, anytime mass shootings take place, the sale of firearms increase. So there is this positive and negative effect on the use of guns in our society. Now, no one wants to think of he positive outcomes of gun violence, but from an economic standpoint there are positives. Needing law enforcement officers are the negatives attributed to crime. A person carrying a gun to keep other gunmen in check.

balance

There not only need to be a balance in social and political, but a balance in the mass production of weaponry. But, what we are seeing is the breakdown of what guns are in a society, so what will happen economically? Hand guns will be tougher to rollback, but what will happen to the ownership of high powered rifles the more people fight against them?

PUSHBACK: HOW THE SURGE AGAINST TRUMP COULD HURT THE 2020 ELECTION FOR A PARTY

White House

“2020 is quickly approaching.”

politics

Since the election run of President Donald Trump, there has been constant protest and contest infighting. But my question is, is this good for a party? Because we have not had a politician in the United States that people have pushed against this heavy in a very long time. So what are the Republicans to do?

Image result for protest

We have been watching over the country smaller elections after Trump victory where the entire Republican party is being moved aside. So what will 2020 look like with so many people pushing against the leader of the country. It seems as if with these smaller elections, people are making other Republican candidates pay for how they feel about Trump.

personal

So, with the political decisions, you have the emotions running deep. And people have taken this moment in time to vent their personal views. And it has permeated the environment in every discussion about the president. But is it always good to have all these emotions running throughout our society?

Related image

Because when emotions are behind all the decision making we lose all logic. And even during a logical moment, we still run with the emotion at times because the social construct of America forces us to choose sides. Meaning, there are people who like the president, but will say no comment or they don’t from fear of verbal, and sometimes physical attack.

a party in peril

Now we have the question left of what will happen to a party that is being seen as untrustworthy. Could it be that Trump has dismantled a party, or has he just unwound himself? Because like I Image result for republican losingsaid earlier, a lot of Republicans have been taking loses since Trump’s election. And on top of that, an entire young generation will be voting that didn’t get their chance to vote in 2017. Also with that generation is a group that voted Obama in 2008 and 2012. So you’re talking a massive push in 2020. You could see a run bigger than Obama’s. But whoever it is, could prove a real problem for Republicans if Trump runs again.

THE EMOTIONAL MANY: SHOULD EVERYONE’S VOICE GET COUNTED

Image result for social media

“Don’t fight it, there’s just too many of them.”

In the event you find yourself in an argument with a community of people via social media, don’t fight it. There are just way too many people out there to fight against the grain. And this is something that the President of the United States is dealing with while in the White House. Never get into bouts, and if they start to smell fear, they attack more. It’s like sharks in the ocean, they smell blood and fear, then next thing you know, you’re in a world-wind of fighting. Then once the argument is over, you leave the situation feeling like crap, and they leave feeling a sense of accomplishment. This is what brings me to ask the question, ” Should everyone who has an opinion be aloud to have their opinion heard?” Just because you passionately feel a certain way does not necessarily mean it means something.

Especially in today’s society where everything is a hashtag and an agenda. Any reason for people to get made at some new topic of interest. Then once you show it the slightest bit of attention, the fire ignites even more. And that’s when you realize that not everyone’s opinion should be heard. But you can’t get that across to advertisers who cringe and coward in fear at the very thought of being labeled anti-anything. Instead of pushing back, they cater to the loud noise. Advertisers don’t want to lose anybody, so they try their best to appease this loud audience. And like I said, you shouldn’t listen to everyone. Sometimes you just have to loss a few people. Hard to do when you are profit maximizing firm, where dollars is everything. Depending on the profession, there is a way to respond to such criticism from the masses. You can either ignore and loss some people, or do like comedians and poke fun at the critics. Because then again, they have a loud voice, but only make up a small percentage of the country.

Which brings me into my next point regarding people who feel like everything they say must be dealt with swiftly. This swift and sensitive bunch are what we call the loud minority. The other group that don’t care are known as the silent majority. The loud group might constitute for about 100,000 people while the silent group is about 10,000,000 people. Problem is, we tend to cave to the 100,000 and give them a voice. A voice that they probably don’t even deserve to have in the first place. And in the end, if that silent group do not speak up and counter the loud group you will continue to see this loud small group have a voice when they shouldn’t have a voice. Advertisers will learn when that silent group finally speaks, that they are the masses, and that the loud group is only in existence to make life more difficult. Considering a lot of times, this loud group are projecting the disdain they have for their own lives onto you.
