DIGITAL LEARNING: WHAT WILL HAPPEN OF SCHOOLS IN THE FUTURE

Photo of Woman Teaching

“The next step in American learning.”

the classroom

The classroom has taken on many different faces over time in America. But the future could hold something different in this country as well. Especially with the fight that teachers already have with maintaining the attention of the class in such a digital era. Kids constantly are on their cell phones and other mobile devices, that the teachers now have to almost assimilate to the new way of grabbing their attention. So much so, now teachers are promoting learning tools that are more interactive outside the classroom. But what happens when the interactive experience removes the in school learning experience in all?

remote location

We are already starting to see teachers give lesson plans in colleges where you don’t have to physically show up to class. But what happens when this becomes the norm for grade levels in elementary through high school? Then you’re going to have push back from parents who want their small child in school. Because they need to know how to communicate with teachers and other students. This is going to be their first hand account in how to resolve conflicts and deal with other people. Once that is removed you now have more than just learning that is gone. You miss out on all the personal relationships you build. Students who would otherwise make friends in school are now missing out in getting to know their classmates. But is everything as bad as it seems?

opportunities

With the downs, there is life in the digital learning outside the class. It could force students to build communities with others not in their school as well. Why, well the internet gives you opportunity to experience dealing with people you otherwise wouldn’t meet. Imagine a digital learning environment for kids like playing a Call of Duty video game. You are connected to a kid in China from New York; or connecting to an Indian kid from Iowa. There is this global base that would bring people closer together with this new digital model.

REMOTE LEARNING: HOW WOULD PARENTS FEEL ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN LEARNING FROM HOME

Photo of Woman Using Her Laptop

“Far too impersonal.”

at home

Parents in the past who home-schooled their children were seen as revolutionaries. But in today’s society, especially with the school shooting across the country, maybe more parents may want to consider home-schooling. But the traditional home-schooling is different than what I am thinking about. I am referring to a more remote classroom where the teacher is not physically at the school. More so, the teacher is at home, and the kid is in front of their computer at home. They communicate via web cam, and it would create a more digital means of learning. With no books and a paperless form of learning.

access to technology

When trying to create something this remote, you will need to make sure students are able to bring themselves near a computer. And not everyone has a computer, and those that do, don’t have reliable methods of learning in this new capacity. So what would happen is that those kids could see themselves, at no fault of their own, lag behind even worse than in the classroom. Because now you’re talking reliable internet access. Where even some of your best students could be negatively effected by such a move in education. Which leads into the next paragraph.

communication breakdown

As for the communication, there are a few issues that occur from the remote learning. When inside of a classroom, you are able to look into the students eyes and connect to them whereas you cant’s through a computer. But the main reason kids come to school, is where they start to develop means conflict resolution and dealing with others different themselves. You also have communication issues via the technology that will make it impossible for the teacher to do their jobs. So as for now, we will stick to the more traditional method. And that is sending your children off to school each and everyday.

AUTODIDACT TO SUCCESS: HOW SELF TAUGHT SKILLS HAVE BEEN ON THE RISE

alphabet, class, conceptual

“Use what you know.”

teach yourself

In today’s society, self educating has become a major way in which people are learning to do anything in life. And there is a name for people who are able to self-educate; they are called autodidacts. I myself am an autodidact, and have been for quit some time now. Few people fall under this category because it’s so hard to self educate. You must have a great deal of patients and a willingness to learn. Because you are on your own for not just hours, but months and even years.

degree of failure

It’s very difficult for a lot of people to work on something and then deal with the idea of failure. It requires swallowing a pill that you don’t have to do when learning through an educator. The educator can show you where you went wrong and aid you through the problems. When self taught, you may get help from time to time, but for the most part you’re on your own. So this means failing, being honest with yourself and realizing when failure arises, and correcting mistakes. And being honest with self is something most can’t do because we think we’re so important and special. No one wants to openly admit they are awful at anything.

major upsides

There are so many great things that can come from self-educating. And the biggest is that when you step into world being in a classroom, it’s a lot different than the real landscape. But when you have gone through all the trials self-taught, you know what you’re up against. In a classroom, there is no studying for a test, the test is life. And it’s a test where you get a chance to use your notes in the classroom. And in the real world you have to make things happen. And we see all the upsides from some very talented people from online stores to running small brick and mortar businesses. Self-taught is the new wave, but how many will last is the real question?

INCREASE YOUR BASE: HOW LEARNING OUTSIDE OF YOUR STUDIES IS IMPORTANT

Pile of Covered Books

“Read, understand, put to use.”

please read

Ever wonder why certain people are able to think a certain way as it pertains to their vocabulary or their ability to rationalize subject matter. The reason being is that they have built a base for themselves because of all of material they have read over the years. And that is something a lot of people just don’t do. And if they do read it’s usually a fictional novel. They very rarely read books that are based in different forms of science. Rarely do they read or wonder how the world around them operates on an atomic level.

where did that come from

Ever been watching Jeopardy and saw someone firing out random answers and getting them right. And I am not referring to the people on the game show. I’m talking about the people at home. Well, the reason they can just shoot off random answer like that is because of the base they have accrued over time. Unbeknownst to them, they are able to guess these answers without even knowing where it came from, but it’s there in your head.

bor-ing

People have a hard time building a base because they see what is being read as irrelevant to them. And that’s what keeps them from building a base, thus not being able to call back when information is needed that will be useful in their lives. Now, is it all about boredom, no, but so many people are just not in the mood to learn new things. They work all week and just want time to have fun or to themselves. The last thing they want to do is continuously work.

the paradigm

As you live and read and learn, you don’t really understand what it is you’re learning to do. What are going to use all this information for in the end? So as you go to sleep and wake up, you learn and learn. But with the learning and learning, you continue to progress. And that progression comes from the base you built over time.

FALSE SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS: WHY FORCING GOOD GRADES ARE BAD FOR STUDENTS —

board, chalk, chalkboard

“The final grade is final.”

performance

When students are in school, taking a test is major outcome of their overall grade in class. And when that grade is low, no matter how good your grades during the quarter or semester, it hurts your overall GPA (grade point average). Yet in today’s society, there has been a shift in grading where students now have a choice to retake the test. This is of course an isolated situation, but the fact that it’s growing in popularity is problematic.

fall and get up

When you allow a child to retake a test, you’re setting them up for a more failing grade than the D or F they received in class. Because if they are unable to cope with that letter grade, life gets harder. And they are going to be in for a real culture shock once they step into society. And environment where you are going to fail and there is no retaking of the test. You just have to deal with the loss. Luckily for those that have to deal they are able to fall and get back up. But for the child given a pass, they’ll grow to think the world is wrong, when in reality they were not prepared for life.

perfect world

Who in life wouldn’t want to re-due everything in their lives that they failed at, without losing time. But the reality is that you only have that one choice. You might have another shot to make the next situation better by learning from the previous. But since no one wants to deal with a hurt kid, we make it possible for them to live in a fictitious world. That is until they finally experience life’s hardships.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS: WHY DO WE EXPECT SO MUCH FROM OUR EDUCATORS

Man in Black and White Polo Shirt Beside Writing Board

“Cut them some slack.”

doing their job

Teachers are expected by the masses to be superheroes. We send our kids to school and think that the teacher should give them all the tools they need to be great. But the teacher is just a small part of your child’s success. The parents play a role in the child doing well in life as well. Yet the teachers take a punishment when the students aren’t performing.

work with them not against them

Playing a role in your child’s success and having good teaching is what creates the successful kid. But that depends in the relationship the parent has with the school and teacher. As a child, my mother played a vital role in us performing because she would call the schools for anything. Didn’t matter what it was, just to keep up with what we were doing. This way the teacher didn’t feel everything was on them.

give them the tools

We want them to educate our children, but we don’t give them the tools to do so. We have schools with old books and outdated equipment. Then the performance is low and we say we need better teachers. Well, how do you make due when you’re at an insane disadvantage. So the grades are a reflection of the lack of backing from not only the parents, but our government. So if you’re not going to be part of the solution, then you’re contributing to the problem.

DANGEROUSLY SMART: THE MORE EDUCATED WE BECOME THE MORE PROBLEMS WE CAUSE

black-and-white, blackboard, business

“We get smarter, and we get more dangerous.”

learning to scale

The more educated we become the farther away from ourselves we get as people. You would think that the education would make us better. But what we have done is become more aware, yet distant at the same time. Our educated minds create technology meant to bring us closer together, yet it’s the mediums that binds us.

doing more

Are we not doing more with our learning? We send our children to schools to learn, but what. What are they really learning? Are they genuinely learning material that will have a positive impact or negative one? They able to used smart devices better than their parents, but are we not utilizing their abilities to its full potential. Should we be doing more are we doing enough?

negative externalities

When what we learn is not utilized in the appropriate manner, we worsen society. When the more learned and understood of the masses ignore morals and principles that have aided us thus far, we lose a piece of ourselves. For example, we educate ourselves in this new tech space. But now people are creating dating apps that break conventional dating norms. And what it has done was create an impersonal for of communication.

growth

Our brains will grown because we are constantly evolving and trying to make sense of the world around us. But the more we learn about ourselves the more educated we become the more we become slaves to our own vulnerability.
