We all would love to walk out of college into the job of our dreams. But the reality is, is that what you are expecting is just that, a dream. You have to realize that a dream job comes with many years of experience. So, in order to land that job, you must be willing to put in a lot of grunt work. So what will assist you in getting to that point in life is taking on roles that are not as glamorous, but they move you in the right direction. And that is where taking on a “ship” may aid you. And you might say, a “ship,” what is a ship? Well a ship is an internship, fellowship, apprenticeship.
An internship is the most widely known position that a college student is able to attain that will place them around the career they are pursuing. Interns work in the trade of what ever they are pursuing in life with the hopes of gaining experience. Now, for the most part you will be going on coffee runs or drafting up paperwork. You are not going to be working directly doing anything financial in an internship in the financial sector. No one will be listening to your opinion, nor asking you questions. The goal is to network and keep your eyes and ears open to the environment around you. Now, this is not to be confused with a fellowship program.
Now, a fellowship is different where you are working along side someone with the same common interest. The sole purpose of a fellow is to come together with someone of more knowledge in your field to aid in increasing your abilities in your practice. The majority of fellowships come by way of the education environment where fellows purpose is research that contributes to the faculty. You usually are working under the tutelage of a superior, like in a teaching fellow you are a teaching assistant. I myself was apart of a fellowship for theatre about two years ago.
Now, here is the “ship” which the apprenticeship. And this one is the most important of the three. Because traditionally, you are paid, low wages, but paid. And you are somewhat of an employee working side by side with professionals. Here, you are going to be working to be more specialized in you craft. And here is the most difficult of the three ships as well because this could make or break you in your career.
As you earn, you will be prompted to spend money. But remember something, as you age you will need to live on something for the days when you can longer earn. But in the paradigm of living we only think about the now. Yet what about the thought of tomorrow. You can’t just live frivolous and worry when that time comes. Because if that time comes and you have nothing then it becomes your own fault. Why do we do it? Why do we live like there is no tomorrow and only for today? And there is more to this than most people are willing to disuss.
How you were raised says a lot about how you look at money. When I grew up, it was all about paying bills then if you have more left over. But few think with this mindset. Especially if you grew up where money was not as cared for and respected. Yet even in a house where money was valued, some people still spend without thinking about tomorrow. Me, I’m always thinking about the machine collapsing in on me. Maybe because my mother lived off of why put off til tomorrow what can be done today. So my necessities havw always been number one.
keeping up with the joneses
We as people do not like being left out. And because of that we must spend to keep up with the crowd. But will the crowd be there when you falter due to your spending. You have to think about living another day. Live everyday as it’s your last is the dumbest concept. Or do people take that statement to literal. Because living everyday as your last does not mean spend your last. If means get up everyday being productive. Just in case this is your last day on Earth.
A lot of people go into business with different reasons for why they go into business. Some people go in with the idea that they will make a lot of money. And others go into their business with the idea that they are going to provide a service to people. But what is more important when pursuing a business career? Is it the idea that you are potentially going to make a lot of money? Or is the importance more focused on loving the job? Because there are the upsides and the downsides of both. You can’t say one is more important or less than the other. Because it’s all about why that person is pursuing.
When you love something the money will come. And the reason you need to love what you do in business is because you are going to be going at it for a very long time. So you must really have to like what you do. Because initially there is no money in what you going to be doing. So if it’s all about the money you will give up early on in your pursuit. The idea of money will be such pain because in the paradigm of living the money is so slow, you almost feel like why am I doing this everyday. So for money, there is no gratification, especially in the beginning.
We all love doing what we do when we get a chance to do it. But we also have to be practical in the sense where we need to start generating an income. Money pays for food, utilities, living arrangements, healthcare, etc. You have to realize that money has to be a driver in what it is you do. You’re not running a charity and even then money is important. You have needs, but you also have wants. You want to live comfortably, travel, take part in certain leisure activities. So money has to be a priority; is it number one, maybe not, but it is important. We all love the expression, “If you could live comfortably how you want and do your career for free, would you.” It sounds good, but the dough needed to do that is a lot. And for most, that is not the case.
You have to find yourself teetering somewhere between the love and money. And at times you will find yourself balanced to one side over the other. No one is completely on one side and happy. If you don’t have a balance then you get depressed having too little and depressed with so much. And the other thing tends to lose out. So find your balance in business prusuits and go for it.
There is nothing like the feeling you get once you have accomplished something big. Mine have come in the form of education and sports growing up in life. I have yet to hit that momentous point in my career. But, I will say that it is a work in progress. Yet for those that do win, they must understand that the fight is not over. Not only is it not over, but you have to continue to play the game like you have not won much at all. You should never get complacent because there are more people ahead, and even more behind you. So be practical with where you are in life. Know that you are not in first place, more like 4th place. And that there are three people ahead of you, and four people behind you just as hungry.
cocky is a death sentence
Understand that even with major jumps in your success, you’re in reality not on top of the world even though you might think you are there already. What do I mean by that? Well, you have for instance, entertainers that get one hit song and think they have just conquered the world. And that is because the heat is so strong. But in reality, they have done what the greats have done, 20, 30, and some 40 times over. This is how some of those people with a new hit become one hit wonders. Because by next year, everyone will want some new hit music. And with no new hits, they fall through the cracks. So don’t get too beside yourself where you’re not able to fully gauge your level.
appreciate your current space
As you come into your success, don’t get complacent and don’t get cocky, but also appreciate where you are at this stage. So many people get caught up in the idea going forward, sometimes they forget how far they’ve come thus far in life. And that loss of appreciation can prove to be disastrous as well. Because you may rise, but not appreciating where you’re at and stacking yourself up against others can lead to depression. You will never feel good enough to continue forward. So persevere, but don’t think you’re bigger than what you are; yet at the same time know you have come far and appreciate that move forward from where you used to be.
We go to our jobs on a daily basis and then come home. We go to the workplace then come home. Our lives take on this mundane process that seems to never go anywhere, until we realize there must be a change somewhere. So what is that change that must take place? It’s the change of finding a new job. But you also think about whether you want a job or build a career. Because building a job and having a career are two totally different goals. A job is a wage you’re paid for performing a task and a career is a lot more specialized.
This is what most people have, a job. They go to work, and they perform a task that pretty much anyone can be trained to perform. But it’s just that a task. And when you are working a task that virtually anyone can do, you now put yourself in a binding position. Because now, if anyone can do this you will easily be removed by someone else. But also, once a better means of productivity takes hold, you will be replaced. So without specialization certification you are literally holding to life by a thread.
Let’s get into the career, and acknowledge that this is what most people strive for in life. The difference between a job and career is that working on the register or grill of McDonald’s is a job, but the Regional Manager role is a career. One requires job training to complete, and the other requires your skill to contribute to the overall productivity of the organization. The main reason you want a career is because it doesn’t seem like work. You are doing what you love, so you’re theoretically living out your dreams.
