FUTURE TELEVISION: HOW TELEVISION HAS CHANGED OVER TIME

“Where are we going?”

it sure has changed

From when my mother was a child, to me, to now; television has changed a lot over the past 50 years. When my mother was young she said there only a few channels on television because so much was on the radio. But when I became a child, there were well over 100 hundred, plus the emergence of the internet. But today, there is so much programming that we have to catch everything on our phones or tablets. Now, if you missed your favorite show, who cares, you can watch it on your portable device. And that is the full change of television. Which is why purchasing a T.V. is so cheap today.

where are we going

Imagine a world where no matter where you go, you put on your glasses, press a button, and out pops the screen. You can literally watch a movie that no one else is seeing but you. Your boring subway commute or that long time spent in a traffic jam won’t be so bad after all. Ok, ok, maybe not driving your car unless you’re a passenger, but you get where I’m going. The ability to stay connected might actually boost the ratings for television shows. Because we think a television is an actually product for watching moving images, but television is a telecommunication medium. That is a very wide range of meanings.

impersonal or more personal

People seem to think that there is a lost of connection the more digital we become. When in reality, we are becoming more connected as a species. Especially if the augmented reality and virtual reality starts to get better and better. We will find ourselves in a type of world that we live out our dreams as an escape from the daily grind. We’re always looking fora distraction from the hardships of life. Augmented reality will become a great medium for entertainment, while virtual reality will become a great place for getting away. Imagine a virtual world of lying on the beach. You can take a vacation to a place you might be able to afford, but can enjoy it.

POLITERTAINMENT: IS AMERICA TIRED OF POLITICS IN ENTERTAINMENT

Image result for ANTI TRUMP CELEB

“What was once entertaining is no longer.”

2016

The election of 2016 where we saw the run and subsequent win of president Donald Trump has left sour tastes in many American’s mouths. But nowhere is that more evident than in the entertainment industry. Entertainers have all come forward speaking out against the president for the way he behaves as well as his lack of experience in the role.

But have we hit a point where people are finally fed up with the consistent berating of the president from entertainers. Because after a while, it starts to get rather redundant. Celebrities speak as if the more they talk, the more we get closer to his impeachment. But from the looks of things, nothing of the like will take place.

hitting a wall

We’re now starting to hear people say things like, “Alright, you hate Trump, we get it.” Or, “Let’s get back to the entertainment.” Now what celebrities don’t want to do is start alienating people. You earn your living from the masses. And even those [entertainers] who may be anti-Trump are irritated from so much politics in their industry because their livelihood is in jeopardy.

Image result for ANTI TRUMP CELEB

Ultimately what you will end up doing is making him more popular. Or what you’ll do is desensitize people to Donald Trump. And then if something far more detrimental does take place, people ignore the situation. You want to further your cause, but not at the risk of making your villain more popular. Like the Dark Knight, who knew Heath Ledger would be the most popular figure of that film. He was made so hated, people wound up liking him that much more.

what now

Like I said before, further your cause, but try not to alienate the very audience you are looking to reach. Because in order to figure out why someone would vote for a particular candidate. you must first connect to them. Look at life from their perspective, even if you disagree with them. You still have to do so. Otherwise, you’ll end up with the same results again.

But above all, you have another job to do. And that job is to entertain the masses. Once the way people see you as an entertainer slide, so will your influence to those who know you best.

DYING FOR FAME: WHY DO PEOPLE WANT TO BE IN THE PUBLIC EYE SO BAD

Image result for fame

“Why we want it so bad.”

fame

You work your craft for years and years, then you get that big break. And from that big break comes this level of celebrity. Once you’re in, there is no stopping you, you want more of what you have been working for all these years. But when there is ever a time that fame starts to elude that person, they get nervous; why.

Why do so many talented people who could still get work become nervous when they are not talked about anymore. You would think that the idea is to continue working. But being at the top is what they love, it’s why they worked so hard. To be at the top of their game. But today’s topic is actually not about famous people fighting to stay famous. More so society’s need to be known.

civilian notoriety

Now, previously I discussed the celebrity aspect of holding on to fame. But what about people in society who are chasing fame. They want to be so known that they are willing to create reality shows. Even if means that the show could be the catalyst for the family dynamics to break down. And interestingly enough there has been a breakdown in every reality show.

Yet, people still chase the fame. And we want to know, where does this stem from; is it mental or emotional? The need to be known everywhere you go, what is it?

lonesome roads

When you’re running this life race, you are doing so alone. Even when people are in your corner you don’t exactly have people present. So for the ones who can’t cope, they look for validation through other people. Wanting to be seen and known means a lot to them. It’s why Instagram is so addictive because of the likes and follow reward.

You post a photo, and then you see the likes rack up. It’s what keeps the internal all together. And unless you’re doing this as a means to generate an income or build a business then it can be seen as troublesome.

privacy is important

As much as people want fame, they want to left alone. They want to keep to themselves, but they also want the attention. So is it because they are getting enough from friends, family, monogamous relationships, etc.? Because unless you are working in a capacity where you just so happen gain notoriety for what you do, why else would you want fame?

See, most want to me known for something. It doesn’t have to translate into being famous. We just want to be recognized for something that we do, and do well. Which also goes back to how people seek the attention that they are receiving in their daily lives.

HOLLY______: WHY YOU DON’T NEED TO GO TO LOS ANGELES TO BE IN THE BUSINESS

“Fame happens anywhere.”

los angeles

For the longest, if you wanted to succeed in the film and television business you needed to go to Los Angeles. If not, you most likely were not going to make it in the business. But now things have changed. Anyone with a computer can host a television show or movie from home.

a new era

Who would have ever thought that having your own channel would be possible. Well, with YouTube you can have just that. Now hosting a television show or posting a film is real. You don’t have to sit in pitch meetings hoping someone buys your project. You can be the executive producer of your own creations.

lost business

What are the downfalls for the people in the entertainment business? Do they now have to host their own platforms to keep up with the changing times? Because young people use to want to fly to Los Angeles in hopes of being discovered. Now they want to be YouTubers. So the bosses in the business have to now scout whereas the ones in the past had talent coming to them. The idea that they now have to hunt after so many years is difficult. But in order to stay relevant they must do so.

boom or bubble

Will all these independents eventually crash or will the business falter? No one really knows because Hollywood could be hurt. Or the company Google could always discontinue YouTube. And the other option which is YouTube becomes a paid subscription forcing a lot of little guys out. Well, in time we’ll see the end results.

FLEETING FAME: WHY I THINK REALITY TELEVISION IS NOT GOING AWAY

“We watch they fall apart, we continue to watch.”

reality unfolding

Reality television has always been an aspect of American life. We look at the Kardashian’s television and seem to think they were these creators of reality TV. But when you look back in time, reality television really started with these dating games shows. Where we watch someone try to win a date with another person based on a series of questions.

But in today’s society, when we hear reality television, we think about the idea of watching a family on television. Normal people who put their families on TV for the sake of letting people into their homes. Only problem is, there is always trouble once you let people into your life.

it all falls apart

At least once on every one of these reality television shows has been a major divorce or other family break up. Why, it’s because you don’t put your life out there for mass consumption. Because now, you are subject to the same ridicule as any other celebrity. And this is when everything starts to fall apart.

These average American who are now open to the public are ready for what is in store. People who pursue this as a career know what they’re getting themselves in to. But the average Joe is looking at it from the fame standpoint.

fixated eyes

We love watching reality for the simple purpose of the train wreck. No one tunes in to a show to watch the television show about a family doing well. But if you add a break up and some fighting, now you’re in business. It’s a topic of discussion among people in society. Only problem is that you become invested in a show just to watch the drama unfold.

Then once the family decides to make a change and not fight, we don’t watch. There is something about watching people fall apart that makes us appreciate our own lives. But most of all, it makes us able to cope with our mess, to watch someone else’s mess unfold. And that shift in change leaves us detached from them because now they are no longer us.

“MICKEY MOUSE ON DEMAND.”

WALT

Disney is an entertainment multinational conglomerate that has been providing us with a fun experience for nearly a century. And they have always been at the forefront of change in multimedia. So it came as no surprise witnessing companies like Netflix, Hulu, Vimeo, and Amazon generate staggering revenues in the entertainment space, Disney would follow.

FINDING THEIR PLACE

Disney is some unknown company jumping into a space they know nothing about or have a fan base. It’s a rusted name that even their competition grew up on as children. And with Disney Image result for DISNEY acquisitionacquiring 20th Century FOX, they have such leverage in their ability to control content. They now own ABC Television and a large portion of FOX programming.

This does not only put them in the game for films and television series, but also news, sports, and more development for future content.

PUSHING OUT THE COMPETITION

Now, with Disney in the game, someone stands a chance of being removed from the equation. They have the ability to force someone out because they have so much control already in the entertainment business. So, who will be the first to be pushed out, or lose a large amount of the market?

THE DISCOVERY: HOW DOES ONE STAND OUT FROM THE PACK

Image result for STANDOUT

“Dare to be different.”

differentiating

In our society today, you see so much entertainment that is based around so many people sounding the same and looking the same. How do you know one person from the other. Everything you turn on is just the same as the next thing. So in a world, where I myself am an artist, it seems that you have to be sometimes the norm to be relevant; but do you?

the pack

What if I dare to be different as most would say. Does that mean I will be seen for certain? Because in the entertainment world, people want their success right now. So when they see another person’s formula working, they run with that. But it’s not you, you’re the rest of the pack. Find your voice and stick to it, but that it easier said than done.

programming

There are so many different ways to standout from the pack and not get caught up in what else is being done in entertainment. But we become so disillusioned by what is hot right at this moment, we are in a trance until it’s too late. cinema, dark, displayIt’s why you are supposed to exercise your creativity like any other muscle in your human body. I think this is the reason when it comes to entertainment, I try my best to not get caught up too much into what is hot. Because what is hot is always getting replaced. So stick to your guns and keep at it.
