BEST OF THE BEST: HOW ACADEMICS ARE BEING LOWERED IN AMERICA

Two Books Beside Two Chalks

“Let them fail.”

a grade shouldn’t be given

I was hearing on the television where a school here in New York City was passing students through and not even really checking to see if they were qualified to graduate. And you think to yourself, is this what schools have become. We are now just pushing kids through as if someone is going to push them through success in life. But for some reason the new thing is to give kids grades for simply nothing in the world today. This whole something for nothing culture that is in schools is only going to hurt kids in the long run. What is the reason for the change? Are our children this incapable that now we have to lower the standard in order to raise their confidence?

when did it start

Playing youth sports, I remember at nd of the season we got a trophy. I never understood why because we got pushed around the whole year. So I know I lost, but why the trophy? And then I got older and looked back on times. It was the start of giving kids something for nothing. Even in school I found out about the infamous curve. The curve where if every person in the class received a low grade, then the teacher would raise the grades of people to a certain percentage. And that is when the problem starts. I don’t care if the school classroom all got bad grades, it is what it is.

life is not given

Once we have given a kid everything, then what now? The world will not give them nothing for nothing. You have to work hard for everything you get in this world. I myself am going through a weird mental hang-up in my life. It is strange to go through this time, but as a young adult who is 32 years old, I feel like sometimes lost. But that is the realities of life, you are never going to be given anything. And that is very hurtful, but you will go through these times in life. This time period is no different; and this too shall past.

DIGITAL LEARNING: WHAT WILL HAPPEN OF SCHOOLS IN THE FUTURE

Photo of Woman Teaching

“The next step in American learning.”

the classroom

The classroom has taken on many different faces over time in America. But the future could hold something different in this country as well. Especially with the fight that teachers already have with maintaining the attention of the class in such a digital era. Kids constantly are on their cell phones and other mobile devices, that the teachers now have to almost assimilate to the new way of grabbing their attention. So much so, now teachers are promoting learning tools that are more interactive outside the classroom. But what happens when the interactive experience removes the in school learning experience in all?

remote location

We are already starting to see teachers give lesson plans in colleges where you don’t have to physically show up to class. But what happens when this becomes the norm for grade levels in elementary through high school? Then you’re going to have push back from parents who want their small child in school. Because they need to know how to communicate with teachers and other students. This is going to be their first hand account in how to resolve conflicts and deal with other people. Once that is removed you now have more than just learning that is gone. You miss out on all the personal relationships you build. Students who would otherwise make friends in school are now missing out in getting to know their classmates. But is everything as bad as it seems?

opportunities

With the downs, there is life in the digital learning outside the class. It could force students to build communities with others not in their school as well. Why, well the internet gives you opportunity to experience dealing with people you otherwise wouldn’t meet. Imagine a digital learning environment for kids like playing a Call of Duty video game. You are connected to a kid in China from New York; or connecting to an Indian kid from Iowa. There is this global base that would bring people closer together with this new digital model.

REMOTE LEARNING: HOW WOULD PARENTS FEEL ABOUT THEIR CHILDREN LEARNING FROM HOME

Photo of Woman Using Her Laptop

“Far too impersonal.”

at home

Parents in the past who home-schooled their children were seen as revolutionaries. But in today’s society, especially with the school shooting across the country, maybe more parents may want to consider home-schooling. But the traditional home-schooling is different than what I am thinking about. I am referring to a more remote classroom where the teacher is not physically at the school. More so, the teacher is at home, and the kid is in front of their computer at home. They communicate via web cam, and it would create a more digital means of learning. With no books and a paperless form of learning.

access to technology

When trying to create something this remote, you will need to make sure students are able to bring themselves near a computer. And not everyone has a computer, and those that do, don’t have reliable methods of learning in this new capacity. So what would happen is that those kids could see themselves, at no fault of their own, lag behind even worse than in the classroom. Because now you’re talking reliable internet access. Where even some of your best students could be negatively effected by such a move in education. Which leads into the next paragraph.

communication breakdown

As for the communication, there are a few issues that occur from the remote learning. When inside of a classroom, you are able to look into the students eyes and connect to them whereas you cant’s through a computer. But the main reason kids come to school, is where they start to develop means conflict resolution and dealing with others different themselves. You also have communication issues via the technology that will make it impossible for the teacher to do their jobs. So as for now, we will stick to the more traditional method. And that is sending your children off to school each and everyday.

OVERCROWDING: WAYS TO KEEP SCHOOLS FROM GOING OVER THE RECOMMENDED POPULATION

Image result for crowding SCHOOLS

“Navigating these halls can be impossible.”

school population

Walking the halls of certain high schools, you can’t help but to notice there is a major population issue with some of them. And the issue has been a problem for some time now. But how do schools districts deal with the overcrowding issues at area schools? Should they build another school? Should they go down a list of students who are tardy and start eliminating them that way? Should schools be encouraged to push students into earlier graduations?

cost

The cost associated with overcrowding are not just monetary for a school. The other non-monetary cost are the inability to focus in a classroom. And the other cost is the lack of connection made between student and their educator. These are more long-term effects of a school that follow a student even after they graduate from high school. But the biggest has to be the problem with trying to teach in a class where there are just too many in the classroom. And with disruptions that generally occur, the student would be better off teaching themselves. Because the students that want to learn are not getting anything from the lessons anyways.

alternatives

I gave a few options in how to deal with the issues surrounding overcrowding in schools. But one option that may be overlooked is trying to get students to graduate early. Find the students who are higher performing, and give them incentives into leaving high school early. Aid them in scholarship money for early graduation and that could decrease numbers in schools. You could also observe who is the most disruptive, and remove those students as well that negatively effect a learning environment.

ACADEMIC LOST LOVE: WHY WE AREN’T EDUCATING OUR CHILDREN ENOUGH IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN AMERICA

audience, auditorium, chairs

“They’re failing and it’s our fault.”

When observing the academic landscape of America, and the rest of the world, you can’t help but realize that the rest of the planet is passing us by. And I am using the word everybody when looking at countries that we have trumped over, over the years. Now with China as the number one economy on Earth, we now have more competition from other developing nations. We have the famed BRIC countries: Brazil, Russia, India, and like I said before China. You look at the way these children are brought up in school and you compare them to the children in America, and there some key differences. This new way of treating our children like they’re ultra-special for doing nothing can’t help. We give them all trophies when they lose and win in sports, and we also allow them to retake test when they fail. Instead of letting them fall and get back up.

Because falling and getting back up is what you have to do to succeed in the world. And when we don’t allow that to happen, we wind-up with a bunch a crybabies who expect the world to be given to them on a platter. But besides the special treatment we give to our nation’s children, what about the curriculum. The children in the poor communities are receiving the worst while the kids in rich communities get the best. And yes, if you are from money you can afford the means to what someone poor cannot have in life. Yet when you’re looking at education, we tell our children to work hard, but if they are starting out in school with poor education then where is there room to make that statement. So many are not ready for college because of the academics in their school at no fault of their own. Provide them with the appropriate tools, and if they don’t want to learn then turn away from them.

But it’s not like that, growing up in poor communities education dollars is being pulled from poor neighborhoods, but as a student why bother working hard at times. If the education is poor, what can you really do. Getting into college is nearly impossible, yet we say go to school. The issue that I have is that our Department of Education almost act as if we give the kids too much knowledge then the ones at the top start to get replaced. And the last thing people high up want is more competition. So we set them up early to fail, so they give up. Then you have a nation of few bosses and a lot of people disgruntled with life working dead end jobs with mediocre educations. Because in the end, you have to give them a chance to fight. You can’t say here is a poor education in school then act shock when it is worthless. Provide the appropriate tools, and then if they give up you can say I tried. But if you start off with screw you, you can’t be too shocked when they fail.

GPA, WHO CARES: HOW IMPORTANT ARE GRADES REALLY?

Related image

“Is it really a determinant in life?”

All my life in school I was taught that if you are not getting the grade in school, you are setting yourself up for failure. How are you not up late night studying for an exam or doing the homework? If you are a “C” student, then you are not going places in life. Now, if you are a straight “A” student then you are in position to make things happen for yourself in life. No one cares about other aspects of school, like your ability to learn subjects that interest you, how long you are willing to toil away at a subject, or even your ability to bounce back from adversity. Because a lot of those “A” students are so used to getting good grades, they have a hard time coming back from anything bad in college or in life. Why else do these good kids fall so hard?

Because when you grow up in school, the teacher will gravitate toward the good student/s. And when that good kid goes to college, the professor has no problem giving you a failing grade. They are not going to care who you were prior to college. And this is the first time in your life you have had a poor grade. So they at times can spiral downward. The kid who didn’t get higher grades have had to grind in the face of being told you can’t succeed outside the grade. The “C” student might be an “A” student in life, but they are not good in school. I can tell you for sure that school and life is so different. School is this structural environment that makes you study minus the notes. But in life you’re allowed to use your notes and all other materials for your personal gain. You have to go get it in life, not brought to you.

Schools like to scare kids into telling them things about the real world that is real, but also somewhat of a distraction. Because when you step into the real world, everything up to that point that is not relevant to work experience means nothing. You have to prove yourself, and if you are not use to proving yourself, then no one cares about anything you have done in this world. That is why grades are important, but like I said before, a little bit of a distraction. Because I was not the best kid in English growing up, yet I self-published two books this year, and working on my second short film script. But, I also taught myself everything about writing on my own. People feel since I didn’t learn in an academic environment I can’t possibly write. But writing is writing; and to get better you must continue to write well.

In the end, grades are not the end all be all, but schools look at it that way. To me, it is not just a way of ranking people in classrooms, it’s about providing exclusivity in the schools. If every kid in the classroom gets an “A” then the teacher gets reprimanded because the course is too easy. If too many fail, then the course is too hard. So we structure schools that so many can’t do well, then grade them in life on the basis. Let me tell you, it’s not that; you are not going to fail in life because of a grade. Succeeding in life has to do with perseverance, will, determination, consistency, hard work, and persistence.

FEAR OF REJECTION: HOW TO COPE WITH HEARING THE WORDS NO

Image result for REJECTION

“It hurts to say no, sometimes we don’t even ask.”

There are far more hurtful experiences in life than getting rejected. But the feeling of being told no can be so painful. Rejection can be such a broad word: from not getting the job you want, to getting rejected from the school of your choice, and even someone telling you they’re not attracted to you. There is almost this exposing feeling of someone figuring you out. You had this secret and now they know, and there is no going back. What are the various ways you can cope with rejection you face in your life? Does the feeling of rejection ever go away?  Let’s start by analyzing the ways we experience rejection.

When in the case of attaining employment, rejection becomes difficult especially when it comes to that job we wanted for so long. We have all gotten that letter from a job telling us we regret to inform you that you Image result for REJECTIONweren’t selected for employment. And that deflating feeling you get once you realize you weren’t among the individuals selected. Funny thing is, you receive so many of these that they don’t even matter anymore. You actually become numb to the feeling of receiving these letters. And another key observation is you don’t have to deal with the human element of rejection. And that brings me to the next form of rejection that is probably the toughest to deal with in life. And that is the dating rejection.

When you are young, especially a guy because typically we are the ones engaging in conversation first, you don’t have a defense. There is not this real mechanism in place that will aid you in dealing with rejection. So you Image result for REJECTIONapproach and she tells you that she is not interested and you walk away with a sense of failure. The face to face rejection is so tough, and this is why computer apps like Tinder have become so popular. It makes life easier to deal without the face to face rejection. You swipe to accept or swipe to reject when someone wants to talk to you further. It is an impersonal way to communicate, but it kills the weird after rejection vibe from dealing with hearing the words no. Yet there is still another feeling of rejection that hurts just as much. And that is not getting accepted into your school of choice.

Not getting accepted into the school of your choice may feel like the end of the world. For the past four years or maybe even longer, you have these ideas of the school you want to attend. Then you gather all the information together and send it off to the top schools you want to attend. And one by one you get the rejection letters sent to you. And that feeling of failure setsImage result for rejection college in and you feel like the past four years was for nothing. What was the purpose of trying so hard in high school. It just didn’t seem worth the work you put in. But in the end, rejection is normal; if you can’t deal with the previous rejections above, you can never become successful. All successful people had some level of rejection. It’s a test of your resilience and strength. So learn how to deal now because it gets worse. This is all a stepping stone toward where you want to be in life.
