LEAVING THEM BEHIND: HOW YOUR CAREER FORCES YOU TO LOSE PEOPLE

Man Sitting on Bench

“No longer in my life.”

you lose them sometimes

As you embark on your career, and then come into your career, you may lose people. And when I say lose people I am not referring to the people that are in society looking from afar. I am referring to the family and friends in your life. Well, more so the friends in your life then your family. Why, well in order to further get ahead in life, more and more time is spent away from the people you call friends. And this means shifting further and further away from them. Now, you don’t want to shift away form them, but there are just going to be people you lose for no other reason besides the fact that they don’t quit understand what you do. And that doesn’t mean what you do career, but your willingness to fight because they are only thinking in context of their own careers.

moving in the same direction

You want to hang around people going in your same projected direction. And that direction is not always the direction that the people closest to you is going. And in the case of family, you tend to see family less, but they are your family. Your friends, you can go years without really acknowledging the fact that you guys are friends. Especially once marriage and children start to come into the mix of things. And it doesn’t dawn on you until there is a down moment in life or down time, when you say to yourself, “Where have this person/people gone?” And that’s when you realize how busy you’ve been in life.

if they grind, they’ll understand

Anyone who is pursuing and endeavor will know what your struggle is about. And they will not take it personally. Those are the people who are around and will be for years to come. And you will notice, that the circle of people get smaller even around them as well. But through all this, you take on new relationships as well. The friends you once had may be gone, and new ones form through people may have thought you would have never hung with before.

WORK LESS, ENJOY MORE: LIFE IS NOT ALL ABOUT HAVING A JOB

adult, blur, businesswoman

“All work and no playtime.”

work work work

People such as myself, work and work and work, without really taking a day off to just rest. But when you are so motivated how do you rest. Well, there is something to be said about working less and enjoying life. Because for starters, tomorrow is not promised. But for the most part, if you live to be a great age, do you really want to look back and all of your youth was spent grinding to be successful.

what’s driving you

When you’re driven, others will look at you like what is wrong with this person. But they live their lives working and home, working and home. So it’s hard for them to understand why you’re so driven. They don’t see the things you see in life. And if they do, it’s so murky, the odds of getting to that successful point in life is not in reach. But your dreams are in reach, which is why it’s such an obsession to work. If people could for a second see into your mind they would understand your fight.

running out of time

Where are you going? Seems like you’re headed nowhere fast. Some people you never indulge work until time has depleted. You don’t understand that when you’re working and working, days turn to weeks, weeks to months, and then years of your life are gone. So if you’re working all the time, it better be for something great. You better be in the process of carving out a name that will live on forever. Because you are sacrificing  a lot of precious time on Earth.

SET OUT TO SUCCEED, PLAN TO FAIL: WHY MOST DON’T MAKE THEIR DREAMS A REALITY

Portrait of Young Man

“Want it, go get it, it won’t come to you.”

People in society have this ideology that they want something and it’s supposed to come to them. And I don’t mean the idea of sitting around and doing nothing. I’m talking there are people who say that I go to work everyday. Shouldn’t that put them into a position to be where they want to be in life? And my reply to that would be no. You might be thinking why not, you work hard, why aren’t things coming to you? Well, believe it or not, just going to work everyday and coming home does not put you in a place of advancing. You have to do more to get more out of life. What does that mean? It simply means that you have to put yourself more in the know of where you want to be in life. For example, if you want to advance in the medical field, you don’t just come to work and be a doctor. You should be reading up on medical periodicals and contributing to publications.

That might sound odd, but it’s what you have to do. That is what is meant by putting yourself in the know. Going to work everyday does not make you an expert at your profession. It only makes you an expert at your task. Meaning, while I pursue a career as a writer, filmmaker, and photographer, I work in retail. So, on a daily basis, my job is to do a lot of mundane work that anyone can accomplish. Who don’t know how to fold a t-shirt, tape up a box, or ask customers what items they need. But it pays the bills momentarily, all the while I work outside on my writing craft. If I wanted to advance in the company that I work for, I could not just fold t-shirts. I have to find a way for the organization to maximize its profits while saving them the most amount of money. And that is how you move into a place where you want to progress forward.

Well, that sounds simple right, no. There is a lot of time that must be spent in order to move in the direction of your big break. And when I say time, I am talking about years. How many people are willing to take years out of their lives to build their career. When I moved to New York City, I put myself on a time table of ten years to break into my career as a screenwriter. Along the way, I wanted to standout by showing I could make my own film, write and self publish a book, start two blogs; all with the aspirations of being great at what I do. So that when I finally do reach out for representation, I can say I have been doing this and this and that over time. Just saying I want to do something and it’s supposed to come to me is not enough. You’re not special, maybe to your parents, but not to the general public. They didn’t procreate to birth you or raise you. Hell, they don’t care if you succeed or fail.

Because in the end, the quote I always live by, “No one has a stake in interest in you being successful except for you.” I hate using cliches like “grab the bull by the horns” or “good things come to those who wait.” If you want something to be, you have to think it up into existence. That doesn’t mean to literally think it and it happens. But through every project you work on, it should amount to a small battle that ultimately leads to you winning the war, type of outlook on life.

LOST IN A DAILY TRANCE: HOW WE WOULD RATHER DREAM THAN MAKE A MOVE ON THEM

Image result for collateral jamie foxx

“A dream is nothing but a dream without plan and execution.”

The above photo is of Academy Award winning actor Jamie Foxx. The photography is from the movie Collateral where he co-starred opposite Tom Cruise. His character was a man who would drive people around in his taxi cab, and during his lunch breaks, gaze at luxury vehicles. His character had dreams of running his own car service of luxury vehicles. It would be an experience and not just a ride. That was his dream until he ran into Tom Cruise, who was a villain in the movie. Cruise’s villainous character, unlike Foxx, was a doer. And for obvious reasons he had to be because he was a hired hitman. So his career revolved around standing by his word to get the job done right. So what does all this have to do with the topic at hand? Well Tom Cruise made Foxx’s character realize something about himself.

Cruise’s character gave Foxx a big ultimatum regarding his dreams and expectations in the world. Cruise let him know that the in reality he was never going to do what he set out to done anyways. Foxx would be in a trance with day time television and then one day he’d die. Die, never accomplishing or even setting out to do what he said he wanted to do in the first place. And that is what this topic is about today, not setting out to accomplish goals. These are the dreamers, the people who would rather dream about what they want then to go get it. And like Jamie Foxx’s character who fancied himself with Mercedes Benz booklets of their latest fleet with hopes of starting his own car service, we look and gaze at the imagery. But the fear of failure keeps us from making a move. Yet we fail anyways in life when we do nothing.

Then again, it is all about fear in life? Sometimes we don’t know how to start what we want to do. For me, pursuing a writing was a little more clear than for most. I put myself in the know, and I am currently pursuing. I have been actively writing since the age of 25 years old. So now, with six years of writing under my belt, I have four more years to break into writing my screenplays, playwrights, and novels. But like I said, I have been writing, even putting together a short film and currently working on the production for my second. So putting yourself in position to work toward what you want is not a guarantee, but it is a step in the right direction. And that is the hardest part for people to stomach. Not the putting yourself into position; but more so, putting yourself in harms way to accomplish anything in life.

In the end, you don’t want to deal with the idea that you might set out to accomplish something and fail in life. But that’s part of the climb is to fail in life. You can’t attain success until you’ve stared into the eyes of failure. Because once you stare down failure the worst is behind you. Especially for those of us who had to climb to attain what we have in this world. You have no other choice but to take the road no one wants to travel. And it’s that road that makes you appreciate so much when you finally get to where you have to go.

GOING BACK HOME MIGHT NOT BE WORTH THE VISIT: HOW HATE IS DEEPER WHERE YOU’RE FROM THAN WHERE YOU LIVE NOW

Image result for racine,wi

“Hey city, where is the support?”

The photo above is of my city; that’s right, my home town. The name of this small place is Racine, Wisconsin. Population 78,000; with that good ole Midwest feel. But this is not really about my small town. This topic is actually about any small town or even big city. Why, well the reason being that it’s hard to gain love and support from your home town at times. And you would think that your town or city is the happiest to see you doing well. But not necessarily so; sure you’re going to have the people who love you. But there are still so many people that don’t like you as well. I remember a former NBA basketball player by name of Caron Butler who is from our city would drive through during off season. No he still plays a role in the community, but that’s not the problem.

You see, the real problem is the people who remember what he used to be. When Caron was a youth, he found himself wrapped-up in the narcotics world. A world where at every step you could lose your life. But he managed to come out on top and land a college scholarship playing basketball at the University of Connecticut. After that, he was drafted in the first round by the Miami Heat, and was consistently showing his face in Racine, Wisconsin. Now, as a young boy in middle school, I was like, “Wow, this dude who is an All-Star came not only from my city, but grew up in my same neighborhood; and the same street. But with all the adulation came the people who show less love than the people who are out-of-towners. People from out of town respect his rise from the streets to the NBA. But the guys who didn’t make it out the streets, frowned and didn’t show love.

And that’s when it dawned on me, people that hate the most where you’re from remember a different you. But most of all, you remind them of the time they have wasted here on Earth. Your success is confirmation what they could have been. Since they didn’t want to listen, or put in the time, they now walk around angry. But you can’t be angry at anyone but yourself. Can’t blame a guy like Caron because he said to himself, “This life ain’t for me,” and removed himself from the streets. Yet it does not sink into the people’s head where you come from. When someone not from your town succeed, you can almost dismiss their grind as luck or they had something handed to them. But a guy who grew up with you hanging on the same block is impossible to ignore. And that’s when the taste of sour grapes sets into their mouths.

In the end, own up to your own mistakes in life. Don’t let life pass you by, then get angry once someone has made the appropriate adjustments to their lives. I will never understand why there is this feeling of someone’s success is someone else’s failure. I’m proud when I see people coming from nothing doing well in life. Because it could have just easily gone in the opposite direction.

MAKE THEM CATCH YOU: HOW COMPROMISING YOURSELF FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS IS NOT SMART

Athletes Running on Track and Field Oval in Grayscale Photography

“Catch up or be left in the dust.”

Ever been running a race and there is someone who you know is in the race with you. You guys both are trying to win yet encourage each other. But you have to also keep in mind that there are others in this race running with the both of you. So if you are in 3rd place and your friend is in 5th, you want that 5th place friend to catch up. But remember, there is 4th between you both, 6th, 7th, and 8th place in the back. And that’s when you start to care less about the position your friend is in, and more about trying to win the race yourself. Because your goal is not to worry about the place where your friend is sitting, but more so where you need to be. And where you need to be, is moving yourself in position for the 1st place win.

See, you can’t think about the person in 5th place that you know. They have to be bent on catching up to you, otherwise, you have to let them lose. And this topic is not about participating in sports. This topic is about trying to run your race in life. I was watching an interview that Hip Hop artist Snoop Dogg was apart of where he was discussing this same thing. He stated when he first entered the entertainment business, it was him and his friends. Then, as time progressed he stood tall and they never left their position. And the only way to be at their level was to come back down. And that’s when you start compromising your talents in this world. Which is a statement that I agree with wholeheartedly. You cannot make someone want to be something in life unless they are bent on going the distance themselves. Because you do more harm to them than help to them.

The way I see it, your 3rd place should make them motivated to run faster even if it’s only to finish strong 5th. Hey, and they might catch that 4th place person or even you. But if you drop back to help them, you’re now risking 4th catching you, and also 6th, 7th, and 8th. Now both of you guys are stuck in the back of the pack. And some people are comfortable in the back as long as there is someone there with them. Me, I am far from OK with being in the back of the pack. So in the end, the person who is running behind you have to have it in their mind to want to catch up in life. Because if you keep aiding them, they’ll never grow. They’ll always want you to carry them somewhere. Sometimes you just have to let them fail and keep moving.

BRING ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR, YOUR HUDDLED MASSES, YEARNING TO BE FREE

Image result for us flags

“People died for rights to be and stay protected.”

For the longest throughout American history we have always had people coming into this country from some place else. They arrive to escape war, famine, poverty, and religious persecution. America is just that place where they can be themselves without fear of persecution. America is that country where their hard work and determination will speak for how far they’ll go in life. But my question to you is have America, or are we starting to lose the allure about this country? Are we becoming what all these other nations have been which brought people here? If so, why have we changed or why are we changing?

In my opinion, we have not fully changed, but we are changing as a nation. The image of your children coming to this country pursuing their endeavors is diminishing because the people who have been here for so long feel slighted. Their feelings are that if these groups continue to flock over here then what is left for them. But if this new group just emerged, Image result for us immigrantshow is it possible that they have replaced you? They can’t replace you if you are already here working. But they do replace you, and part of that is not necessarily because jobs are leaving the country. One aspect has to do with politics. The political landscape in America plays in a role in their success.

You might ask how; how does politics play a role? Because they don’t look at America as Democrat or Republican. To them, it is a land of great opportunity despite whose in power. They understand that American Related imagepoliticians are policy makers not job creators. So they’ll only make it easier or harder for an organization’s ability to hire. Meanwhile American born citizens are looking for a party to make their lives better. Hilary was supposed to make life better. Then some say Trump is the winner, he’ll fix it. But in reality neither will. They just create the policy for you to make your own life better. So immigrants understand they must work and not sit back waiting for work to come to them. They go out and create opportunity.

Another aspect of why immigrants are more successful than Americans is because they also are willing to learn the new thing in our society that is where success lies. Meaning, if tech is the new America, then it’s tech they learn. We, being born here, say we prefer the same old method because we don’t want to learn something new. We get complacent where they don’t. Mainly because complacency where they come from is complete failure. And, they have fought so hard to get here, why. Why spend years getting here, just to be lazy when you get here. There is no expectation of being handed anything, just move out the way and let me create my own lane.

See, in the end, people yearning for freedom is what makes this country great. Because in return, they contribute on such a large scale. In the medical field today, so many Indian Americans dominate the field. Not because they are born that way. They are raised to pursue careers in areas Image result for american identitywhere people are needed and where there is job security. Meaning a great garbage truck driver can be replaced, but a great physician can’t. People need doctors, but you can remove the human element eventually from picking up trash. So in opinion, we should always remain open to those legally going through the process of being an American. Because once we lose that, we lose part of this nation’s identification.
