POLITERTAINMENT: IS AMERICA TIRED OF POLITICS IN ENTERTAINMENT

“What was once entertaining is no longer.”

2016

The election of 2016 where we saw the run and subsequent win of president Donald Trump has left sour tastes in many American’s mouths. But nowhere is that more evident than in the entertainment industry. Entertainers have all come forward speaking out against the president for the way he behaves as well as his lack of experience in the role.

But have we hit a point where people are finally fed up with the consistent berating of the president from entertainers. Because after a while, it starts to get rather redundant. Celebrities speak as if the more they talk, the more we get closer to his impeachment. But from the looks of things, nothing of the like will take place.

hitting a wall

We’re now starting to hear people say things like, “Alright, you hate Trump, we get it.” Or, “Let’s get back to the entertainment.” Now what celebrities don’t want to do is start alienating people. You earn your living from the masses. And even those [entertainers] who may be anti-Trump are irritated from so much politics in their industry because their livelihood is in jeopardy.

Ultimately what you will end up doing is making him more popular. Or what you’ll do is desensitize people to Donald Trump. And then if something far more detrimental does take place, people ignore the situation. You want to further your cause, but not at the risk of making your villain more popular. Like the Dark Knight, who knew Heath Ledger would be the most popular figure of that film. He was made so hated, people wound up liking him that much more.

what now

Like I said before, further your cause, but try not to alienate the very audience you are looking to reach. Because in order to figure out why someone would vote for a particular candidate. you must first connect to them. Look at life from their perspective, even if you disagree with them. You still have to do so. Otherwise, you’ll end up with the same results again.

But above all, you have another job to do. And that job is to entertain the masses. Once the way people see you as an entertainer slide, so will your influence to those who know you best.

GLORY BE TO ADDICTS: WHY IS THE DRUG USER THE NEW CULTURAL FIGURE

addiction, adult, capsule

“The new form of fun.”

drug culture

In America, we have always had this culture where drugs have been apart of our lives. Cocaine was such a big influence in entertainment as with the 80’s and 90’s. But the glorifying of the drug addict was not real. The hustler was the one so many people wanted to be. The hustler is the one who had the lavish lifestyle.

But today we have the user being the one everyone wants to be. The idea of attaining wealth and prospering has gone out the window. And where does it all come from? One major driver is the entertainment we consume.

it’s what we consume

When you listen to a lot of the music, you have so much that is geared toward the drug use. You constantly are inundated with popping pills and drinking alcohol. Even a few musicians have taken on monikers that are linked to drugs. But it’s not just any style of music, it’s rap music that has taken on the drug culture.

What’s odd about the music geared toward using drugs is that in the past the seller was glorified. Now I ask, “What are the results o fall this drug usage?”

one’s lose is another’s gain

In an industry that generates billions of dollars, whose to lose and gain through all of this drug promoting? Because of course the artists is the obvious choice, but they have even become addicted to drugs. But what about people who work for bigger brands that are partnered with these artists? They don’t allow their children to listen to the music they use to make money.

And if their kids do listen to the music, parents make sure they separate the reality and the fiction. This way, their child or children don’t fall victim to the pitfalls of drugs. Because inevitably those that care will have to continue to fight the uphill battle against this new drug culture.

HOLLY______: WHY YOU DON’T NEED TO GO TO LOS ANGELES TO BE IN THE BUSINESS

“Fame happens anywhere.”

los angeles

For the longest, if you wanted to succeed in the film and television business you needed to go to Los Angeles. If not, you most likely were not going to make it in the business. But now things have changed. Anyone with a computer can host a television show or movie from home.

a new era

Who would have ever thought that having your own channel would be possible. Well, with YouTube you can have just that. Now hosting a television show or posting a film is real. You don’t have to sit in pitch meetings hoping someone buys your project. You can be the executive producer of your own creations.

lost business

What are the downfalls for the people in the entertainment business? Do they now have to host their own platforms to keep up with the changing times? Because young people use to want to fly to Los Angeles in hopes of being discovered. Now they want to be YouTubers. So the bosses in the business have to now scout whereas the ones in the past had talent coming to them. The idea that they now have to hunt after so many years is difficult. But in order to stay relevant they must do so.

boom or bubble

Will all these independents eventually crash or will the business falter? No one really knows because Hollywood could be hurt. Or the company Google could always discontinue YouTube. And the other option which is YouTube becomes a paid subscription forcing a lot of little guys out. Well, in time we’ll see the end results.

WHO’S A TRUE ENTERTAINER: HOW EVERYONE WITH A FOLLOWING IS NOW A CELEBRITY

Image result for FAME

“I can if they can.”

entertainers

An entertainer is a very broad and ambiguous term for what we want to see in performance. Yet we have come to know entertainers in pop culture as people who are famous. Circus acts are entertainers, but how many of them are mainstream. No, no; I am referring to the famous faces we see on television and film.

And the question remains, who are they really? And why are we enamored with them. What is it about the fame aspect that makes us want to gravitate toward them? And also, what does it mean in regards to today?

anyone can be

In today’s society, anyone who can build a platform is considered an entertainer. It used to be you had to go out to Los Angeles in hopes of being discovered. Now, as long as you have computer access, you can be the entertainer. If you have a YouTube channel that you have built, now you can have your own channel/s and become the entertainer.

But are these people really entertainers or just merely individuals we watch until the next more popular famous faces come out with something great?

sustainability

Here is the key difference between the entertainers we see on the internet and the famous faces. The famous faces have built something that is truly sustainable. And as for the others, they tend to break down over time. Because a lot of them are not building anything that is based in lasting. They have had a hit video that stood out, some stroke of luck.

Now all of a sudden we look to them like they’ve done all these great things. In reality, they are just window dressing; filling in for the next project of the bigger acts we know and love.

ME TOO. TIMES UP: HOW WILL THE MOVEMENT PAN OUT OVER TIME

art, awareness, campaign

“Stand up, speak out.”

me too/times up

Over the past year, there has been a downfall of Hollywood’s elite men. There have been a wave of women coming out over the past indiscretions of studio executives and actors. Women who have been victims of sexual harassment and assault.  And with the downfalls came the movements we now know as Me Too and Times Up.

So with that said, how long will these two movements continue? And will they both take a turn for the better or for the worse? Because with what happened to comedian Aziz Ansari, the movement could have been in jeopardy.

upsides

Now, will you stop all of sexual harassment in society; the answer is no. That is a physical impossibility. But a lot of the movement’s cause has to do with harassment in the workplace. And that is the decline of harassment so women can work in a safe space without having to deal with constant advances. And for that, there have been progress.

Sexual Assualt stats by the EEOC

It’s not a fool proof movement, you’re going to always problems. But the goal is to deter the situation. And from the looks of things, we are seeing progress. But, is there another side to all this push back.

downsides

As with the positives of the movement, there are the downsides. And one of them we have already seen. That is when comedian Aziz Ansari was accused of sexual assault, and what it amounted to was a bad date. And this is what the movements have to speak out against. If not, you’re going to start to notice women coming forward for anything just to get their names out there.

And with it goes the movement that was meant to protect women. When we live in a society without due process, you start to get into trouble with false claims. But the moment you say due process, you’re automatically calling the victim a liar. When in reality, you might be saving yourself in the event that the perp is not the real per at all.

FREEDOM TO SCREEN: HOW WE SELF POLICE ON SCREEN WHEN WE DON’T HAVE TO DO SO

Image result for freedom press

“We show what we want.” “We just choose not to do so.”

what can we see

When observing television and the internet, you are allowed to showcase what you want to the world. Just as long as it is not promoting anything illegal. That’s means you can show what you want on the television, but a lot of people do so. And there reason being is because they don’t want to lose advertisers.

That’s right, news outlets and television shows censor themselves because they want to be able to collect on all those ad dollars. And when you are showcasing something they (ad companies) disagree with, they can pull their sponsorship. Because they may not want their brand to be affiliated with what you’re promoting.

where’s the freedom

We have all this freedom to do as we please, but there has to be boundaries. That means if you want to make the dollars, then watch what you say and do. But let’s assume for a second that you don’t abide by the rules. Then what you can do is go online. Yet you still have to be careful about what you decide to showcase to the world.

Why, well there are rules on the internet as well. Like for instance, you can’t upload anything on YouTube because they have deals with advertisers as well. So you have to watch what you say and do. That means creating your own website, and then you’re able to say and do as you please so long as it stays in the realm of law.

restrictions from full freedom

I always wondered, why does one go for full freedom. And I don’t mean breaking the law, I mean, where can I view something entertaining without worrying about advertisers? Because since so many rely on ads to make money, is there a place to view anything and it is what it is? Can I speak freely, publicly about a particular topic, and face losing a gig?

And the reality is that there are outlets, it’s just that they are not as popular to follow. And the ones that do, switch up and monitor themselves. And like I said prior, the money made from treading a level course is much better than taking the risk.

LIFE IMITATING ART IMITATING LIFE: WHEN ARTIST START TO BELIEVE IN THEIR CHARACTER

Image result for life imitates art

“Being what we think we are.”

artistic imitators

Musicians, actors, and everybody in between have or portray characters that they get a little caught up in the sometimes. And when I say this, I am referring to the imitation of art from the artist. You generally see this in Hip Hop music. The only genre of entertainment where your life can be in danger because of your craft.

And why do people feel the need to portray something that are not. Is it really necessary for people to do this to stay on top?

credibility

When in regards to being caught up in being the character, does a sense of credibility add to the equation. Because we think that rappers are gangsters, in reality, they are mere artists good at being the part. And what’s scary is that you could inevitably lead to your own demise trying to portray this character.

But is all about trying to portray someone or do you get so wrapped up in your career you start to actually think you are the character. This happens with method actors who become the character to have a better impact on the film/television show.

stay in your lane

The principal still remains, stay in your lane. Be happy that you have a career where you can showcase your talents. Don’t bow it trying to live up the hype of what a chosen few want you to be.
