FAIL TO PLAN AND YOU PLAN TO FAIL: WHY YOU NEED DIRECTION FOR YOUR LIFE

“Having a projected path.”

goals oriented

In an effort to build a sustainable career, once must plan their lives out. Does that mean your future will pan out this way, no. But the planning process will keep you on track to achieving your goals. My goals are broad because I am a storyteller. I tell a story through my writing, photography, and creative concepts. So for me, planning is very important. And if I don’t plan it is very easy to find myself in a rut. I know this because I have done things without the proper planning and it has made me feel as if I was going nowhere fast.

childish adult concepts

If you ask an adult what they truly want in this world, a lot of people cannot answer this question. They will give you broad terminology that isn’t quite direct. It’s like asking someone what they want in a relationship and they tell you, someone kind, nurturing; someone who will tend to my needs. Sounds cute when you are a teenager, but not when you are a 35 or 40 year old adult. You need a direct reason for why you are doing something or want something. You want a relationship: have an age range, ethnicity preference, religion, income status, education status, physical attraction, emotional stability. This is what matters in a relationship, so you have to know this, which is also the plans for a career. Income status, city where you want to live, how long do you plan no being a certain employment position. These are more geared questions in your life.

dreams are not goals

There is nothing wrong with having dreams in life. But your dreams have to be realistic in scope. You can dream of being an astronaut, but thinking you’re going to just go into space at the age of 25 – 30 years old is a stretch. You have to be willing to dedicate a great deal of your life to science before you step on a ship into space. So know what it takes to get to a certain point in life. Don’t look at the chosen few that made it by this weird stroke of luck. That is far from the reality of how you become a professional in your career field.

OOPS, BIG MISTAKE: REALIZE YOU MADE A CAREER DECISION TOO LATE

Closeup Photo of Man in Black Suit Jacket

“I shouldn’t have.”

i flubbed up

Pursuing the career you have always wanted and then it happens. You settle into the job and realize something quite depressing. That after all these years of building, you have finally arrived and now you feel as if you have made a career move that wasn’t in your best interest. How do you restart because at this point a lot of people just plow through it. Even if it is something they truly don’t want to do in life, they just stick it out. But what happens when you want to stop doing the thing you thought you really loved? Hopefully you are doing something that is easier to walk away from that is not too professional.

not that easy

Changing your career is not that simple when you work a professional job like a doctor or an attorney. Yes it’s been done before, Actor Ken Jeong (dentist) and author John Grisham (attorney). But notice it takes a very long long time because taking on these roles are totally different because they are specialized positions. And leaving a specialized position for a role in another field especially when you are of a certain age is tough. Comedian Joy Behar was nearly 40 years of age when she started in comedy. You have to give it up to people like that because trying something new middle age is tough because you are so set in your ways.

where do you go from here

Now that you know you have made the wrong decision, where to next? See, it’s easy to say , well you know what, I want to be a painter. How do you transition from being a pharmacist to a painter full time? Oh, and my I add, making a living? This is where so many people give up on the dream because they just are so used to living their current lifestyle, they are not starting over from scratch. So how do you get started? Most people who make the transition keep their days jobs. They work during the day and do their task at night. This way, over time they build up enough credibility to transition over. Yet even then it’s tough, because even though you love your dream, we like being secure as well.

THE PASSION TO PURSUE: WHAT IS DRIVING YOUR CAREER GOALS

Photo of Woman Painting in Brown Wooden Easel

“The will to work.”

your passion

In my life, I had plenty of things that I was good at, but not a lot of things that I was passionate about. That was until my senior year in undergraduate school when I started to write my first screenplay. For personal reasons I found that writing was a way to shift how I felt into something outside of myself. But it wasn’t until my mid 20’s when I decided to embark on a career pursuit to become a writer as a career. That quickly became filmmaking and now has opened into photography as well. I never had any interest in the arts outside of listening to music and watching television. The thought of filmmaking, becoming an author, and photography was not on my radar by a long shot.

wanting to give up

If you have never been down this road of wondering what the hell am I doing, then you are definitely not truly pursuing the dream. Meaning, no matter how much you love what you do, there is something internally telling you to run and run fast. That is not only fear talking, but it’s nature. Nature has placed that inside of man because it is what has aided in our survival as a species for so many thousands of years. And for most people, they listen to that inner voice and run to what is safe and makes sense. Then there are the people who jump out there and take the risk. They fail and they fail until they succeed. It is something that so many people admire about them; that fearlessness. But even the most fearless question their abilities at times.

getting good

Everyone is so convinced that we are these amazing creatures. We think and feel that just because we are endowed with a conscious it means something. Which is why it’s hard to be honest and admit when we are good or bad at something we love. Now, what’s interesting is that we can be better if we are honest with our current status. But so many can’t get to the point of improving because they are stuck on the fact that you criticized their work. And that criticism is needed; as long as the person giving the criticism knows what they’re talking about. There is no real way to describe it, you just know when it’s right and when it’s not. What’s sad is that not everyone gets that internal response from nature.

YOUR DREAMS ARE YOUR DREAMS: UNDERSTANDING YOUR GOALS IN LIFE ARE ACHIEVED BY YOU

Gray Dream Freestanding Letters

“They’re yours and yours only.”

your dreams

We all close our eyes and see this place where we want to be. And in my previous post I discussed how we have to think in scope of reality in respect to our dreams. But we also have to acknowledge the fact that our dreams are our dreams. And that no one else has any interest in you achieving your dreams but you. For some reason people think someone is supposed to help them. And notice I said supposed to help. Help is voluntary, not obligatory.

open hands

My career pursuits are very difficult, but not once do I look at other people and assume they should be helping me. Trust and believe, if I do get aid, I’m gladly going to take it if the help is worth it. But at the same time, when you look at someone with hands open wide as if they should be doing something for you, you are setting yourself up to lose. Because parents jobs are to give you something in your hand when you reach out for it. But there also lies part of the problem. Parents will give and give, and now the child thinks that’s an aspect of life. Yet they have actually been set up inadvertently for failure.

i could care less

Me, the world; no one gives a shit about your dreams. Pardon my language, but fuck your hopes and dreams. And that doesn’t mean I don’t care about you. But understand when something is just a dream, but also understand you are the builder. Mainly, realize it’s just a dream that isn’t coming true. That means being honest with yourself and acknowledging that you are not good at something. You can have dreams of being a runway model, but when you are a female standing 5’5″, sorry sweetie, it aint happening. When you’re a man and you want to be in the NBA, but you can barely dribble a ball and stand 5’8″, find a new dream. That’s why I say I don’t care about your dreams. Know when they are unrealistic and understand that it’s your life not anyone else’s.

make it work

This brings me back to a speech Denzel Washington gave to a group of theatre students on dreams and goals. He stated that, “True desire in the heart, for anything that is good, is God’s proof to you, set before hand that it’s already yours.” But then he said you have to now claim it. And that’s where people fall short, claiming it. The consistency of showing up daily with no reward, but small strides to success is tough for them. But the one who puts in the work over time ultimately reaps the benefit.

PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS: WHY DO WE FEAR THE PURSUIT

action, bicycling, bike

“Race to the finish line of life.”

As I have stated before in previous posts, I came to New York City from a small city in the Midwest. Population sat at around 80,000 people and very little diversity. Then after college, I decided to make the leap and come to the east coast. At first, I was just going to attend graduate school and get a job after that while writing my screenplays as a hobby. Yet while going for MBA, I realized that I wanted more from my writing. So much more that I kind of put my MBA studies on the back burner and focused on writing my scripts while working my part-time jobs. And since then, I have written close to ten full length feature scripts, two short film scripts that I shot into short films, self-published two books, and currently contributing to two blogs of mine. Am I close to my goal just yet, not quite. But I am a lot closer than I was five years ago.

The reason I am writing this posts is to try to give people an insight into not only my life goals, but following my vision. And I strongly encourage you to do the same. I’ve always wondered what is it that make people so afraid to pursue their dreams. Is just about the talent, or is it something more? Is it the fear of failure or worried what others will think of them? Maybe it’s the peer pressure or the push back from family. Whatever the case people are terrified to live their lives. They dread stepping out into the world and being the best them. And at times for good reason; who would want to pursue a career just to fall completely short of what they’ve always wanted. No one does. But how will you ever know if you never take the steps to pursuing your dreams. It’s a lot easier said than done; but is it really.

You see, society places these expectations on us to live by. And when you fall short of those expectations, then you have to hear about it. Hear about it in the form of, “I told you so.” And that’s the biggest pain that no one wants to endure. No one want to hear those words coming from another person’s mouth. So to keep from looking bad in front of others, we typically play life safe. Sitting back, we watch others who weren’t afraid, and say, “What if.” Or, “Had I have done this or that, how would my life have turned out.” Regrets are such a big part of life because you can never get that time back. Once tomorrow is upon us, yesterday is an event that will never be recovered. Just hope that the next day is better today and yesterday. But let’s say for instance, you do go for what’s yours in this world and by some chance you get yours.

For starters, don’t expect people to be happy for you. You’re going to get hate from all directions. But that is because they are the population of people who either lack the abilities that you have, project their poor decisions on to you, or they have allowed too much time to pass for them to pursue their own dreams. So in the end, your pursuit of happiness should never be linked to how someone else feels about you or a comparison to their position. Your road to success is your road to success. You could wake up tomorrow and hit the lotto, while the person above you could easily lose it all. And while I pursue my career endeavor, there is guarantee I’ll come out on the other side. But I and you will never know until you make the move to pursue.

YOUR VISION NOT ANYONE ELSE’S: WHY THEY DON’T BELIEVE IN YOU

company, concept, creative

“Don’t expect them to believe in you.”

Someone I work with today was informing me that they have had enough and it was time to pursue their purpose. They were about the quite work and embark on their journey to their own personal greatness. It struck me as odd because this was a person who worked a lot, but now they were quitting. But I am embarking on my own journey, and I don’t know what road it will take me down. And that’s when it hit me, I don’t know this person’s inner workings. Maybe they feel that they have it figured out and things are finally making sense inside of their heads. The pieces are starting to come together and everything is working out for the best. But what is it about the people who don’t see your vision? They can not see you past what you are in the moment, and it takes them longer. Sometimes they never turn around, and only live to see you falter.

The reason being is that they may now have passions of their own, or they might not want to see you above them. If you are working a dead-end job and someone is above you, why would they want to see you prevail in life. They might hate their job just as much as you hate yours, but at least they have the upper hand over you. What happens when you overshoot the runaway of what they expected. Your airplane was never supposed to have made it out of the gate. But you have managed to fly off the runway and into the sky. So much so that you are cruising at altitude while they are still at the terminal watching you soar in the air. And that is when it sinks into their head that they must try to say something, anything to get you to stop working.

Because if they give you the confidence to keep pushing, then what is there out here for them. And that’s when you learn that there are people who look at life in the scope of their failures is your success. If you doing so much and they are not where you are, then what does that say about them. So they have to bring you down a few pegs. But if your life is in so much of a wrecked place, do something about it. Don’t try to bring someone else down because you have not landed on your feet. You are not where you thought you would be by now, so in an attempt to not feel alone, you want to keep them where you are in life. This also falls into the whole crabs in a barrel mentality. You are fine by me, so long as we all are stuck in this one place together. And that’s when you have to make moves to separate yourself.

Because in the end, your personal growth is your growth. It’s not up to you to help another adult figure out their stuff in life. You are responsible for your own problems. So as you pursue your dreams, don’t listen to the crowd noise. Your main goal should be to try to tape into the minds of those that love and respect your vision. You are going to always have adversaries, that’s the nature of the game. Just as long as you meet your expectations, that’s all that truly matters.

MINDLESS MINDFRAME: HOW LEAVING YOUR SMALL TOWN MAY BE FOR THE BEST

Image result for mind

“When you think big and they think small.”

Do you come from a small city or town? Are the people where this place exist carry a certain mind frame that causes you to disconnect from them? Me myself, I come from one of these type of places. The city is a place you probably never heard of, and a population of only 78,000 people. A lot of the younger generation continues to still move away. And the population is still continuing to fall as time progress. Well, why is that? Why are the people leaving this seemingly quiet town. Well, first and foremost, the jobs have left. What was once a thriving Midwest manufacturing city has been reduced to vacant factory buildings. But another reason is because of the thought process of the people.

You probably ask, what makes it tough to live in some of these types of places. For starters, people have a hard time seeing past their current situation. To them, this is it, and there is nothing past this. And not just in a negative I am a failure way. But also in a manner where whatever is the well-known organization to work for, people flock to it like it’s working for Goldman Sachs. People walk around like this place to work for is the greatest and if you can’t get a job here, you must not be worth hiring. It’s like, “I’m a supervisor over at this place.” It’s about levels, as with anywhere else in society. Yet the level is not a real level. They are sharks in a pond, but when but in a bigger city, they become clown fish in the ocean. But what is another reason to leave your small city/town?

Another is how people look at the world as it pertains to the social landscape. I was walking down the street here in New York City, and a guy had on a baseball cap. The logo was of the Confederate Flag, and in addition he sported some sunglasses. And judging by the way he was carrying himself, he thought he was making a statement. Almost as if he wanted to say, “All these others are afraid to express themselves.” “But I’m going to be me in this overly liberal environment.” And sense the language is so sensitive, he thought people would react. Because he probably watched protest in NYC on television and figured he’d express himself. Yet no one told him on a daily basis that no one pays much attention to you. But his lack of knowledge made him look like a loser in his hat. Because he just watched TV like Fox News or CNN, and that’s how he based his perception of a liberal city.

Other reasons you have to make moves from these places is because few people have a sense of vision. People look at you and say, “No one from this small town is doing that.” And if you attempt, people will try to bring you down so you have to leave. They will be afraid of your progress surpassing them. And they think they know you because whatever family you came from as well. Kind of like, “Oh, that’s so and so’s kid.” “I been knowing his family, they up to no good, he must be as well.” So you have to go to a city where no one knows or think they know your family. This way you can start from scratch and represent yourself. And in the end, that’s the just of moving. There is a mind frame that people define as comfortable, which keeps them from growing and you as well if you stay. But lastly, don’t move elsewhere thinking your life will change. Because you have to think different yourself.
