OUR CULTURE IS POP CULTURE: THE REAL FACE OF AMERICA

“We set the standard.”

who we are

For anyone interested in knowing what the culture of America is, then I will tell you. This is a pop culture country, considering we have so many different ethnic groups in this country. With each, people bring their own style which contributes to the pop culture of the nation. Some may see that is an uncomfortable reality because all pop means is popular. People don’t want their culture sometimes to be seen as the pop thing because pop goes in and out of style. And culture of a group should not be seen as a style for many to use then throw away. But I guess that is the downsides of living in such a diverse nation.

song-dance-dress

In this country, we have such a strong identity via the music we listen to, the way we dress, and the dances that correlate with the music. We have even influenced the world with the music and the way we dress. Why, well we as Americans have always set the tone for what is cool in society. Other countries have their idea and perception of cool, but with so many different groups in America, if you have been cool here you are big everywhere.

anyone can be anything

In how many other countries can you see a musician become a world leader? Or better yet, a television personality who became president of the country? America is a country where this happens and we think nothing about it. In other countries, a leader has to hold positions for lengthy periods of time in public office. We as Americans will feel an attachment to a celebrity and think they should lead. But that is also a good thing about living in this country. You can always continue to reinvent yourself. And for someone like me living in New York City, you can be what you want everyday. And rarely see the same two people twice.

THE LOGIC AGAINST THE EMOTION: WHY THE PUSH AGAINST IMMIGRATION WON’T WORK

barbed wire, barrier, blur

“Build it longer, stronger, still won’t help.”

immigration

Since the presidential run of Donald Trump, the sentiment of protecting our borders and removing illegal immigrants from the country have been a topic of discussion. And for the most part, these immigrants have come from countries south of the United States borders. Not too many from Canada, throughout Europe, Africa, or Asia; but from Mexico and Central America. And my criticism of the removal is not because mainly the separation of families and protecting borders. It’s about the sentiment; this held belief of immigrants taking jobs. We need to breakdown the thought of what it is to take a “job” and what are those “jobs” that are really being taken away. LET’S OBSERVE.

the job of the American born

In the United States, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, we have held on strong because of the work coming from manufacturing. And over time, we have seen a lot of those jobs removed and taken to overseas nations where the cost of manufacturing is cheaper. This way, by the time it (the product) hits the U.S. soil, we are seeing a price that is a direction relationship of architecture, building, businessthe business conducted by the corporations themselves with outside country’s manufacturing. Now, here in the United States, with so many factories closing, you have a lot of small cities and towns throughout the country shutting down as well because they cannot afford to compete. If you’re an American manufacturer making televisions selling for $500 how do you compete with a better quality flat screen for $275 – $300. Eventually you have to shut down.

the job of the illegal immigrant

Coming to the United States to seek out a better way of life. That is the main goal for so many trying to gain access to our country. And for those who go through the rigorous process that can take years, they feel it was worth the wait. And then there are the people who take it upon themselves to risk breaking the laws of the land in crossing over the borders by land or by sea in Image result for mexican flagsearch of a better life. Many have known to come from the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Haiti, being that they are so close to the state of Florida. And the bulk of the group that come through America’s borders do so through Mexico.

the jobs they have

In the United States today, there is a held belief that the jobs are being taken by illegals in America. Well, let’s observe what that means. Since Trump has taken office, illegal immigrants have been detained throughout the country and forced back to their homelands. A move that has directly challenged policies like that of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) created by the Obama administration put forth in the summer of 2012. And Americans have both praised and protested the push to remove and separate families. And the idea of jobs being preserved for the hard working American who are losing out to illegals has an underlying problem. Fast Food industries consisting of delivery drivers, servers, busboys, cooks, and cleaners; the hospitality industry of maids, bellboys, and other cleaning crew make up the majority of the jobs worked by illegal immigrants. What’s interesting, is since removing these families, the Americans finding fault with illegal immigration have not shown interests in those jobs. Why because they find it hard to raise a family on the income from working those jobs. So if the reason for removing illegals for the “most part” is preserving jobs and the jobs they are working you don’t want, what is the real threat?

evolution tech-solution

We say, we need to protect our borders from drugs, never works. Let’s protect our borders from violent crime, but the majority of the real threat are American born citizens. And the big one, we need to protect American jobs. But see, the real killer of American employment is technological innovation. The work that could provide for your families are or have become obsolete. That’s why you must have a more specialized skill to earn a living. The jobs like factory repetitive assembly work is not like it used to be. You now have more engineers working the machines that would in the past take multiple people for the processing of goods. And if you’re fighting technological innovation, you’re in a losing battle. Because the country, our continent, with world will not stop evolving through means of innovation and invention simply because you and I can’t keep up. We’re in a game today; a game of either evolve or get left behind.

MINORITY SELECTION: WHO WILL BE THE NEXT MINORITY PRESIDENT

achievement, adult, african

“Whose next?”

2020 and beyond

The presidential election run of Barack Obama left a door open for the next president either Black or any other ethnic group. But the question still stands, who next? Because in my opinion, there will be a White female before anyone else. There aren’t any prominent East Asian politicians or Indians that are strong candidates. The closest Hispanic/Latino candidates would be Marco Rubio or Ted Cruz. And the only African American next that’s remotely a force would be Kamala Harris. Now, do I think this will happen in 2020, no. Because in my opinion, just observing the landscape of America, Donald J. Trump will be back in the White House in 2020.

importance

What is the real significance in having a president that is of another ethnic group. Doesn’t mean much to the group who has always seen a president that looks like them. Even now with young Black kids growing up. They didn’t understand why older Black people, typically middle aged and above, were in enamored with Barack Obama. Yet, for someone who has never seen themselves in that position it means a lot. Let’s look at something on a much smaller scale. The former New York Knicks basketball player Jeremy Lin was an anomaly in the NBA. He was an Chinese American basketball player, who not only played in the NBA, but played well for New York. The interest from the entire East Asian community created a massive following for the Knicks. So I’m thinking, what would happen if there was a “Lin” for president.

what is a minority really

We always look at the word minority and say to ourselves, ethnicity. But what about the first White female president and a member of the LGBT community of any ethnic group. We will in our lifetime see a president that is one of the two mentioned in the previous sentence. The questions are who and when will it take place. Because from the looks of America right now, Donald Trump, or another like him (White male, older conservative), will be president if not him. Does it matter if we do have another president of a minority group? Does it have to be another African American? How about Hispanic? What about Native American? How about a White person, but a female? East Asian? Or is America going to stick with what has been in history which is White males? Because we all say pick the most qualified candidate, but I am intrigued to know when these historic moments occur, who really votes from the job or the historical image.

THE BLACK VOTE: WHY ARE WE AS BLACK PEOPLE NOT REPUBLICAN

White House

“Being BLACK voting RED.”

voting red

For a very long time, the African American population chose to vote red in this country. And as time progressed the flip to the Republican Party took hold. And now, you’re seen as some sort of outsider when you choose to vote red instead of blue. And my thing is this, “Are we bound to one party, or can we be bipartisan?” Because I personally see nothing wrong with a Black Republican. But for some reason, we are always expected to be on the side of the Democrats. Is there something deeper to this than a party?

recent history

In recent history, at least in my time on Earth, the Republicans have been seen as the party for the wealthy. And notice I said seen and not they are the party for the wealthy. Because the majority of Republicans are middle class citizens. And when you observe the landscape of the Black community, it has been plagued by poverty. So this “idea” that Republicans only care about money; this ideology that they have no real regard for those at the bottom keeps us from voting red. Also with the introduction of the current president, there is a racial undertone to the party now.

we are on the right

You would think that just because we vote Democrat we are a Liberal group of people. Not true, to be honest Black People quite the opposite. At times even more so than White Americans. But we never check red on the ballot for candidates. That does not mean we would never. Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City was well-received by a Black community. Because in reality, the vast majority of the community care about the same principles as the past generation. Only problem is that no Republican has really put into effect, or even gave us the feeling of real changes in government. Notice I said “feeling” of change in government. The sentiment we hold inside is that not much as changed, even though it has. And the Republican that can articulate that, may very well pick up America’s second biggest base in the country.

TAKING A KNEE: WHY IS THERE STILL A STARK DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHITE AND BLACK SENTIMENT ON NFL PROTEST

Related image

“In protest of…..”

on one knee

Ever since former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick got down on one knee during an NFL game to protest police brutality in America during the national anthem, the anthem protest has taken on a life of its own. It has taken on such a life that we have now found ourselves back in a Black/White argument. The predominantly White side disagreeing, while the Black side agreed with the protest. So why, why are we so split. And not just on the anthem protest, but a lot of things in America. There is typically this split among Black and White citizens. A lot of times not even planned, just an organic disagreement.

numbers in one direction

The main audience for the NFL is mostly White, and of course with the population of America being mostly White. So with that said, you can understand why the NFL would want to end the anthem protest. They are doing what is in the best interest of their brand. If the mostly White audience don’t want to see it, then you will see happen what is happening which is a ban on the protesting. But on the other side, what do you think will take place in response to the ban? Because this is not going away.

counter push back

Since the issue with the protest have caused the NFL to implement new rules, how will the response be handled. Like I said, since the ruling by the NFL, as well as the President of the United States getting involved, this is far from over. Will there be a taking over by members in communities? Because if people in society form their own coalition, then there is nothing that can be done. But why must everything come down to a topic that involves a racial discussion. Because isn’t sports supposed to be a place to escape the issues of the outside world?

when competition and controversy meet

Plenty of people say keep social issues out of sports. But for the past few hundred years, this nation has been wrapped in racial relations. So everywhere you turn, there is a constant reminder of the history of our country. Whether it’s a Confederate Flag or an athlete with their fist in the air. And for so many, they tend to think sports should be sports and social issues are to be dealt with out of sports. Some even think forget social issues all together. But when you have people protesting because of police brutality, and an NFL player and NBA player are both on camera being improperly handled by police this year (Seattle Seahawk and Milwaukee Buck), the athlete says the conversation is relevant.

a difference among peoples

The reason for the relationship differences are not the media like most would want to think. It’s just how the things have been over time. There is no stopping it until a mass collective shift their perceptions of each other. But the most difficult part is that the construct of Black and White are systemic constructs. Constructs put in place a long time ago; that most say hurt our country. But the construct is almost like a glue keeping things going.

MAKE AMERICA ________ AGAIN: WHY IS THE FEELING SO STRONG FROM A WHITE CONSERVATIVE BASE

Related image

“What is the real allure?”

2016

The presidential race between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump was a serious showdown. One for ages, you had a career politician in Hilary Clinton and a businessman with no political experience in Donald Trump. But, in the end, Donald Trump is the one who stood victoriously with the win. But there has been something that has stuck out in the election and the aftermath. And that is the surge of White voters in America behind President Trump. Does that mean he is “their” president? Or does this election win mean that the Conservative base is back where they need to be? I have a few theories as to why the White male and female base voted Trump.

the collective

During the race of President Obama, the ideology was, “Change We Believe In.” But when voters didn’t feel like they got change, it went far right. And you think to yourself, “How could that be?” How could it be that a president that so many rallied behind be this pushed against? When you look at the election between Obama and Romney, the race was quite close., unlike that ofImage result for trump voters Obama and McCain. A massive close in on the 2012 election should have been proof that a major shift was taking hold. And it was coming from the predominantly White community. Could it be the economy, foreign relations, immigration, terrorism, or health care. Either way, in 2016, the start for what would be a historic moment was about to take hold.

white males

The majority; the group who for so long dictated not only their lives, but others. And for whatever reason, now feels as if that stronghold is being lost. But let me clarify something more about this base: White male-Conservative-Heterosexual base. This base has this feeling of under attack for comments and beliefs. This is the core demographic that feels that illegal immigrants are removing what has long felt like their own. And the expectations for what a man is in society is now being determined by a feminine agenda. And Donald Trump has been seen as the answer to the problems. And if you observe how he (Trump) has carried himself in office, it appears he is catering to this longstanding base.

white females

Women for Hilary Clinton; well at least that was the ploy. But whatever the reason for Hilary running, it didn’t work because the White female base came out in large numbers to support Trump. And it really expressed something on the other side, which is doesn’t matter if a qualified woman runs; a large portion of White women would much rather have a Conservative White male in charge. Which kills the ideology that so many women hate Trump. But is all this true, or is there a lot more fear coming from a White community that really doesn’t exist.

smoke screen

What is the real threat in society? Well, the real threat is not illegal immigration, it’s technological innovation. There was a story here in New York City about a pizza delivery guy seized at a military base after he was found out to be illegal. With an open vacant pizza job, no one wanted the gig. Which is by the way, the vast majority of illegal jobs. So if you are uninterested in gigs Image result for the wall mexicolike that, you won’t do much by removing illegals. Because the jobs that are supposed to be taken by illegals are specialized jobs that are shrinking. Meaning, if Trump every illegal from America, life wouldn’t change for those behind the move. Doesn’t matter, the inevitable is taking hold, and that’s machines replacing manpower.

GROWTH OPPORTUNITY: CAN SMALL TOWN AMERICA BOUNCE BACK TO GLORY

Related image

“From hustle and bustle to bust.”

all american

America has about 19,350 cities and towns, with the majority being small cities and towns. Small places that were once a hustling and bustling town are now desolate. And the reason being is that when companies realized going overseas could mean cheaper labor for higher profit margin, that was it. Small towns and cities that were industrialized started to wither away. Younger generations left and now you have an aging generation left behind.

rebuilding

I wonder, just wonder, is it at all possible to rebuild some of these small towns. Maybe the emerging tech industry will open up new opportunities for these places. Could something possibly be built on the web, or of enough strength that could bring these places around? Because what was once environments for coal mining and steel workers is no more. And with everyone running out to Silicon Valley, is there a chance some of those people can rebuild these broken towns.

they’ll see it, not I

We all would like to build something and reap the benefits of what we built. But what happens when your vision becomes bigger than you? What are you to do when what you want to build you just won’t be around to see. And that is yet another reason why it’s so hard to rebuild these small places. Someone or many people are needed to build for the next generation. Yet who will be the sacrificial lambs to do so. And that’s the big dilemma; who will take one for the team. Because in order to rebuild, someone has to step. Who will it be?
