INSTAMONEY: HOW TO BUILD A CAREER AROUND SOCIAL MEDIA

I see people everyday when I use my Instagram that have amassed a large following. And not all of them are celebrities; some are average Joe’s. But they didn’t start with 500k, 1 million, or 10 million followers. They started with just one as anyone does. But over time they have built a community that at this point they can monetize. And if you are one of the lucky few to have built a career from Instagram, then more power to you. There are other platforms where people capitalize like Facebook, Twitter, and even YouTube. So how did they start and make an income from using these various platforms? Well, let’s first look at the beginning.

who are you

You want to build a large following on the internet, then you need to step back and realize who you are as a person. What are you going to be posting that makes people want to come to your home page or tune in to your videos and consume your content. You have to build some type of niche that is you, so that people can quickly see a photo you take, listen, or watch and be immediately connected. Now, it doesn’t hurt if you are an attractive man or woman who people instantly gravitate to. But for most people, ecstatic are not the thing that’s going to drive you forward. So you need a talent; a talent that must be cultivated over a long period of time. And this is what brings me to my next step which is the building stage.

put the work in

You have to go through steps in order to make yourself attractive enough to follow. So what are the steps one must take.

  1. THE START – Come up with an identity that is you. Are you going to take photos of people, sites, or both. Will you focus on more landscapes, commercial, or are you into the fashion space. Once you figure out what you want to photograph, then you have to start; if Instagram is your goal. If your goal is video content, then the process starts with the ideas you plan to shoot on camera.
  2. THE CLIMB – This is the stage at which you have to show up daily and consistently put in the work. It’s the longest stage where most people give up. Because they either don’t want it, or didn’t realize how long it would take to climb.
  3. THE BASE – This would be the part where most would think they can start making money, but it’s not. Even when you build a base, you can’t just start throwing things in their faces and think they will spend money. That is a sure way to lose followers. There must be something that connects to what you are doing. Meaning, don’t try to sell sports energy drinks if you’ve built a platform off of fashion.
  4. THE BUCKS – Now you can monetize, but watch how you throw things at your base. Let it make sense, and let it be honest. People with millions of followers get offered money opportunities all the time. But when it doesn’t make sense you lose. But when it does make sense, you can generate large scale revenues for yourself.

it doesn’t end at success

You have so many people who think now I can relax, not true. If anything, your life is about to get even more complicated. Why, well because in order to maintain, you have to always step up your game. With every level you reach, people will expect you to hold that position. So with a social career, be prepared to work for years and years; slowly and honestly.

HOLLY______: WHY YOU DON’T NEED TO GO TO LOS ANGELES TO BE IN THE BUSINESS

“Fame happens anywhere.”

los angeles

For the longest, if you wanted to succeed in the film and television business you needed to go to Los Angeles. If not, you most likely were not going to make it in the business. But now things have changed. Anyone with a computer can host a television show or movie from home.

a new era

Who would have ever thought that having your own channel would be possible. Well, with YouTube you can have just that. Now hosting a television show or posting a film is real. You don’t have to sit in pitch meetings hoping someone buys your project. You can be the executive producer of your own creations.

lost business

What are the downfalls for the people in the entertainment business? Do they now have to host their own platforms to keep up with the changing times? Because young people use to want to fly to Los Angeles in hopes of being discovered. Now they want to be YouTubers. So the bosses in the business have to now scout whereas the ones in the past had talent coming to them. The idea that they now have to hunt after so many years is difficult. But in order to stay relevant they must do so.

boom or bubble

Will all these independents eventually crash or will the business falter? No one really knows because Hollywood could be hurt. Or the company Google could always discontinue YouTube. And the other option which is YouTube becomes a paid subscription forcing a lot of little guys out. Well, in time we’ll see the end results.

YouPay: HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE BEFORE YOUTUBE START CHARGING FOR USAGE

“You will pay, or you won’t use.”

YouTube

YouTube has been a platform for video and/or audio content since the year 2005. And over the past 13 years, it has grown in massive size. It is no longer just that content platform for just showcasing you to the world. It is now a medium for entertainment content as well. But will it ever be a place where people are charged a fee for usage?

film/television/radio

You can already upload content for people to purchase just as you would any other site. Only difference between YouTube and lets say Netflix, is that Netflix is a lot more selective. You have to have a following for your content. And then they will take a risk on investing in you. But with YouTube, you can sell directly to consumers, where YouTube takes a cut.

And if you decide to stream for free, understand that streaming dollars are very small for the person who is capitalizing. Still, what are the opportunities if YouTube decides to change up the game and start charging and being selective.

subscriptions

Right now, the majority of people you subscribe to on their channel, you can see their content for free. But this could also be a change to the site. Because YouTube may not charge the users, but the people who want a channel. Then, that would mean, the channel owners have to now charge for people to see their content. This would cut down on people uploading property not their own like song lyrics with the videos.

could it be

Then again, what if the people who use YouTube start to reject the new method. Then you would have this wide open market for people looking elsewhere. Or, the other decision is people paying because they want to use it so bad. Then again, some new young budding entrepreneur could use this as an opportunity to start their own new YouTube.

INTERTAINMENT COLLAPSE: WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THESE ONLINE PLATFORMS FOR FILM DIED

Image result for online entertainment services

“When majors become minors.”

Platforms – streaming

Over the past 10 years, we have seen a drastic increase in the number of market share that online entertainment platforms have in the industry. But something came to mind the more I started thinking about the shift. What would happen in the event one of these major platforms, if not a few went bankrupt? How could this shake up the market?

the market

When observing the market, an article was written by Tech Crunch back in April of 2017 which put Netflix at the top of the heap as far as audience versus reach. And behind them is Dish Network’s Sling, followed by Hulu, YouTube, Amazon, and then HBO GO. Now, the idea of one of these companies going under could be catastrophic since some have valuation close to, if not over $100 billion. The photo below is of the article diagram of this data from Tech Crunch website.

could it be?

Still, with all the control that some of these platforms have, it could happen. There companies in America far bigger that have went under. So don’t think for one second that the spot of a company is fool proof. It could go under. And that would mean companies who compete, not audiences, scrambling for a position over the market. People are fine, we’ll always find an alternative.

the who

There is no real way to know for a fact who will be the who to go under. That is impossible to find out because it would mean knowing company information. But whoever does, if anyone, you’re talking a wide open market; especially if it’s Netflix, Sling, or Hulu.

NO TELE: WHAT WILL HAPPEN OF THE TELEVISION IN THE FUTURE

abandoned, antique, close -up

“What will come of it?”

television

The television was created nearly 100 years ago. And since then, it has transformed from a medium with only a few channels to thousands of channels. First created as a means of educating the public, it has gone on to mean a form of entertainment. But with so many platforms on the internet, what will happen of the television?

platforms

The internet platforms that are rapidly eclipsing the television are Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vimeo, and Hulu. These platforms have gone from small companies, to majors in the film and television business. But will they be a long term threat to the entertainment industry?

opportunities

With regards to people looking to make a name for themselves, there will be an open availability to be creative and grow on their own. You used to have to go to Los Angeles, now, you can upload on sites. Or if you have an audience that has been built by yourself, these various platforms would be open to business. What could this mean for the entertainment business?

barriers

Will we start to see boundaries for coming into the entertainment business? Because if the people who can easily use these services grow too much, they become more of a liability than an asset. Because there are a lot of people who work for companies that are not on platforms. But the other side is platforms may start to become even tougher to work with. So like Disney who announced they will have a platform, others may have to follow.

WHOSE IN CHARGE: WHO DICTATES WHERE THE CULTURE GOES?

“We are in charge, but still let others make decisions.”

moving it forward

In America, every generation has something that defines who they are: Baby Boomers Rock N’ Roll, Generation X had television sitcoms and music as well that shaped them, and here we have Millennials that are now being shaped. But not mainly by the music, but by the social and the political landscape of the country. But I what I want to know is who is in charge of the culture that we push forward. Is it the people or is it something in the mass media and telecommunications? Because even though the people choose what they love, we don’t always choose what we see either.

television news outlets

The initial deciding factors in people getting their information is through the medium of our television news networks. And nothing has been more powerful than the news outlets. The newspaper has gone strong, but the television gets it to us immediately. And we have depended upon them for the longest to push information out to us. So with that said, do they drive the culture? Because the big networks have been battling because of politics: CNN and FOX News. And whatever they feed to society, people tend to bite and run with that information. Yet there are other deciding factors in driving the culture.

social media

Image result for social media

This is now a major driver of the culture in today’s society. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Google, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and many others. As a matter of fact, to a large degree, one of the main reasons the former President of United States Barack Obama was elected was because of campaign pushes via social media. Young people became so engaged in both elections that now leaders in this country as well as outside are engaging on social media. So you can say that social media pushes the culture forward.

we the people

People Silhouette during Sunset

So, here we are at who really pushes the culture forward. We the people push the culture forward, but have allowed the mediums to feed us so much throughout our lives. We now have become our own journalists, and our own musicians, and our own filmmakers. We self-publish and we self sustain because we have the resources now to do so. But as with all the good that takes place, there is an ugliness to the culture as well that the people push. We have become language police and the sensitivity is at an all time high. Now, a lot of that comes from the reprehensible past that people have dealt with. But by correcting it, we overkill making up for it. Yet, as with this shift in culture, what does the future look like with the next generation?

FRIENDS, FOLLOWS, AND LIKES: WHY ARE PEOPLE SO VALIDATED THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

Related image

“You don’t know them, they don’t know you, but they’re your friends.”

10,000 friends on Facebook, 1 million Instagram & Twitter followers, with 5 – 10 million likes generated. We all want these stats for our social media circles. But what does it all mean in the end. It doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know what to do with all this media attention. For most people, they have these social circles on the web so they can be validated for a comment or picture they post to the internet. But for those chosen few, it becomes a business opportunity to better themselves in life. There is always an opportunity somewhere, you just have to go get it. But why do we care so much about our social media following.

Let’s take a look from a business perspective. There are advertising companies that will dish out big money for people who have a massive following. And when I say massive, I am talking well over 10 million followers just on Instagram alone. Not to mention all the other platforms you have on social media. But since I brought up Instagram, there are Image result for instagram moneycompanies that may pay $1,500 to $5,000 for a single picture posted to your Instagram account. So if you’re posting a few times a month, you can generate a really good income. The Kardashian-Jenner girls probably make the most money. It has been speculated they can make upwards of $500,000 for a single Instagram post. But that’s expected when they have 75 to 100 million followers on just Instagram per sister.

Then, there is the other side of social media. That is the idea of being validated with no monetary income. These are people who enjoy the idea of getting multiple likes on a comment. Or making what they think is a poignant statement and people piggy backing off of that statment. Instead of people verbally complementing you, we are now settling for likes. Instead of becoming a leader, we are now all followers. I always find it interesting when I hear people who have no social media. It’s almost archaic for you not to exist in this space. Yet with all this needing to be validating , what are the psychological implications of social media. What are the long term effects of needing so much validation?

For starters, social media gives people who otherwise wouldn’t have a voice the ability to voice a concern. Problem is that people tend to abuse the power and jump on the bandwagon of causes that effect the opposition’s careers. It has also served as platforms where people spread their inner most disdain and hate. Implications of this shows they are hurt and need Related imagesomeone to talk to in life. It has given the people with no power, the power to push agendas forward. But we are becoming more self-conscious because we are putting our physical selves out there for judgement. We are more impersonal because human to human contact is rendered obsolete. And even sex has become desensitizing because we are inundated with so much sexual imagery.

In the end, validation should come from the inside out. Too many people have become too concerned with what others think, and our own views of self have taken a back seat. From over-filtering photos so it gives you a more flawless look on Instagram, to creating profile descriptions of yourself that are not even remotely close who you are in life. We have all heard that term fake it until you make it. But the fictitious lives we lead are so over the top, that we would rather fake it and not make it. Because the look of making it has become far more greater than actually having it.
