CAREER CHOICES: WHAT SHOULD I PURSUE AS A CAREER

choices, decision, doors

“Where to turn?”

so many choices

After college there is down moment when you realize that you don’t know what you want to pursue in life. And that’s when reality sets in entering life. You have student loans, health care, dental, rent, utilities, food, and transportation cost. Unless, you decide to move back in with your parents. Which is a decision that so many young people just do not want to do. You lived on your own for four years, now you’re back in mom and dad’s house. And anxiety sets in because you just knew coming from school you were getting six figures on some job. You apply for work, yet it’s all minimum wage and low pay entry positions. Well, guess what, welcome to life.

weighing options

When you don’t know what you want to do in life, fine. A lot of people spend years trying to find their thing. So as I have said in prior posts, test a lot of things to see what you’re good at. Then narrow it down to a few options. Find what you love and what you’re good at as well. Why is it to love what you do? Because the time it takes to make big bucks or money at all will be long. So you have to like doing what you’re doing. Otherwise you’re going to give up fast. Like me for example, I am pursuing a screenwriting, author, and photography career. If you’re only chasing money, you will be miserable. Has to be more than that; you have to fall in love with it.

finding your thing

You’ll know when your thing is there inside of you. Because it will be undeniable to the point that you’ll do seamlessly without even trying. You want to design and build apps, you’ll do so with ease. But coding is going to take you a lot of time to learn the repetition. Oh, you want to be a leading surgeon, fine, go through your Master’s program, then on to med school. Get yourself a residency, and work for the next 15 – 20 yrs. Yes, that’s right, that many years, which is why it’s great to start as young as possible. Only problem is that most don’t find their thing they’re good at until later.

advice

When receiving advice from others, make sure you’re taking in the appropriate advice. Because you want to adhere to the stuff that could aid you. But not everything people tell you will work. So use your better judgement in delegating what’s important and not. People will assume they know your strengths and weaknesses. But they are only telling you how they see you. Pay heed to the people talking, they may not only know you, but not want you to truly persevere.

MOTIVATION LOST: HOW TO KEEP GOING WHEN YOU’RE FEELING DRAINED

Rear View of Woman With Arms Raised at Beach during Sunset

“How do I keep going?”

giving in

Have you ever found yourself working on nothing for long periods of time. Meaning, you have things to do, yet you can’t get anything done. Your motivation to continue to work is just not there. We have all been in this place; for career writers it’s called writers block. That inability to write something, anything that is of substance. Which further leads to a lack of motivation to write. Only for everyone else, who are engaging in performing an action for their work, they can’t get work done. Something mentally, emotionally, just has them and they can’t shake it loose. What is it? What is that thing I can’t quite describe that causes the human brain to just freeze, giving us a lack of motivation.

step away

Whenever I am working and feel myself losing the motivation to continue, I step away for a while. I regroup then come back to whatever it is I am working on. You need that step away so you can get your mind right. Be in the right mental space so that you can give your best to your work. Because when you’re trying to force your work it’s going to come off bad. It’s like being a guy trying to attract women when your swag is off. Go back, work on yourself and then try going out dating. But if you force your swag, no one will date you. It’s almost like a nature thing that is set in, that even other people around us can feel when we’re off.

find points of engagement

Learn to look for an id, when trying to get motivated to work. Meaning, try having a mundane conversation with yourself to gain some form of inspiration so that you can continue and ultimately finish your work. For example, you are trying to work on a science project for school. You are having a hard time with the building of the project. So try talking to yourself about a regarding how science has benefited man throughout human history. Create all these different scenarios in your mind to the point where the conversation becomes real. IN that talk with yourself, you may not only find other additional ways to finish your project, but finish the project in a far shorter time than anticipated.

LIFE’S GIFTS: DO YOU HAVE THEM OR HAVE YOU JUST WORKED HARD

“Gifts are free, trust me, it ain’t free.”

As a writer, you would think that one has a gift to be a writer. But, as a matter of fact, to say they have a gift discredits the hard work they put into their writing. You’re not born with it, but the fact that people think it is a gift can also be seen as a good thing too. Just as it seems discrediting, you also did your job by making it look so easy. Yet for some reason, if only people could see all the blood sweat and tears you put into your craft, they wouldn’t see it as some gift you were given. Ok then, why, why is it so hard for people to see that you put work in for so long.

One main reason it’s hard for them to see what you do as a gift is because anything they can’t do themselves must be some special power that you possess. And in order to be you, they must go to some far away land to be that great. When in reality it has nothing to do with being special. But another reason that people see what you do as a gift is because what they fail to notice everyday around them, you pay closer attention. And that is what separates the genius from the average person. Let’s look at Albert Einstein for a moment. He wasn’t some special type of guy, it’s just that a certain body of science peaked his interests. So he worked until he became good. Even his theory of relativity was discovered riding a bus home.

We all ride the bus, but how many of us ride the bus thinking to ourselves our body constantly in motion, relative to the bus’s movement if the bus were to stop. People usually think about errands or some other mundane activity. We don’t really travel thinking about science or mathematics. But for the people that do, their minds are always thinking about the complexities of life. Meanwhile, you’re stuck on your daily routine.

Because in the end, these are the people who supposedly are endowed with all the gifts. Yet what they have is no more than hard work and an open mind into whatever it is that interests them. What is the difference between you and Einstein: patience and love for what he does. He didn’t have a gift, for the longest he couldn’t even tie his shoe and he was a failure in science. He never took no for an answer and always came back wanting to know more and conduct more experiments.

LIFE’S PREPARATIONS: WHY FINDING YOUR WAY IS SO HARD IN THE WORLD

Image result for preparation

“Ready, set, take on life!”

You go through elementary school, go through middle school, graduate high school, and then graduate college. And once you have complete school, you step into the world and, nothing. Just like that, you graduate on a Sunday and nothing on that Monday morning. That pot of gold that everyone has been telling you about as it pertains to attaining a college education is false. You sit at home in your parent’s house thinking to yourself, “Where should I turn next?” “What is going to be my next move?” “And if I move, how do I find my way from that point on?” That is why it is important to prepare in life for your next move you’re going to make in life. It doesn’t guarantee your plan will work, but at least you have something to keep you on track. But what is it about life that makes things difficult to find your way.

When navigating this terrain called life, you most often receive your initial life training from your parents. They are supposed to provide you with a basic template for where you should be headed in life. Your trajectory comes from them which involves going to school, getting a good job, and starting a family. Yet it’s not quite that simple when you step into the world. Your parents know what’s good for you before you leave the house, but only you know what’s good for you overall in life. So as much as parents think they know, they don’t know your strengths, weaknesses, what motivates you, and what doesn’t motivate you. All of that comes from you as that person. Even after you graduate college, the degree is the icing on the cake toward your success, as I have stated in previous posts. Everything that goes into making that cake comes from you.

So if you want to make that cake that is you being successful, where do you start? Because a cake is a mixture of different ingredients placed in a pan and put in the oven. So what I am saying what constitutes for the flour, corn meal if needed, sugar, butter, will you need crust because instead of a cake you’re making a pie. But wait a minute now, there are some unique cakes that are made with pie crust. Then conversely, can you make a pie cake? As you can see there are so many options to choose from, but the road to making that cake is up to you. Here is something interesting about learning to make a cake. Initially, you’re going to screw up on so many of the cakes you bake. Your first five to ten cakes might turn out to be shit. You have to throw them in the garbage and start out fresh. And it is the failure that terrifies people when navigating through life.

Only baking a cake is easy failure to deal with, yet it is the same path you have to take in life to being good at your career endeavor. We look on and mesmerize at how the person who we look up to are living their lives. But we are only looking at the finished product; we don’t see the whole process. The process that took years to get to this point. I remember hearing Kevin Hart make a statement about how he has only been really making hits for the past four or five years. And you think about that, he has been around for eighteen or nineteen years. But Kevin was on the comedy circuit building himself a name. We only see the highest paid comedian, but we don’t see when he was barely surviving in Philadelphia or Los Angeles. In the end, success is hard to attain because it’s like crossing an alligator swamp with no boat. You have to swim across, and to get to the other side of the swamp, you’re going to have scares of battling gators. And everyone wants to get across with no gator scares, but that’s not possible.

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR OF SUCCESS: WHY YOU SHOULD KEEP FIGHTING

abstract, architecture, art

“Don’t walk away when success is on the other side.”

For the past 6.5 years I have been writing my screenplays, with the hopes of securing an agent. Now that I have more of a handle on my writing, I want to pursue an agent in the year 2018. But what I don’t want to do is quit when I am so close to doing what it is I want to do in life. I always remember the quote from Thomas Edison, “Many of life’s failures didn’t realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” I have used this quote in other prior posts as well. And that feeling that so many people get when they stop pursuing and see others doing what they wanted to do. It hurts because it makes them realize how they might have been able to win if they stuck it out. But instead they ran away because it became far too tough to continue. And why do so many stop short of their dreams in life.

Usually people stop pursuing because they are getting older and older and start to see their lives slipping away from them. They are pumped about their dream job at 20 years old, then 25 comes and they’re still pumped. But once 30 years of age hits, they start to get that feeling of it hasn’t happened by now. That feeling that everyone else is going on in life without you, but you are still dragging along. I myself, am 30 years old pursuing screenwriting/filmmaking and as a novelist, but I work retail and as an usher. Most people I know have already gotten married and started having children. But me, I am single and have no children; and from the looks of things, I won’t be having children and dating anytime soon. And in a life that is long, why do we have these ways of seeing the world as over at such a young age? It’s because we are on a clock that society has stated you should be doing certain things by a certain age.

But then again, why should we be doing certain things? What if you’re like me and don’t want to get married or have children? You tend to look at society from a totally different standpoint. To you, life is long and you have years to focus on building a family. Yet to those living by the societal standard, they must be married by a certain point, have children, have a career. And the question states, why? There is no scientific proof of the world not spinning on its axis if you don’t live your life by certain standards. I’s because we want to be accepted, even if it’s at the cost of not being happy. We would much rather exist in a world where we’re unhappy and fit the societal standard than to be dangerous on the outside of it. And in the end, that’s why we fall short of our success. We want to satisfy others and not ourselves. We want to fit into a group not build on something we love. It’s a lot of group think in order to be with the pack. And people want the group acceptance.

POOR MAN’S HUNGER DRIVE: WHY PEOPLE FROM A CERTAIN SOCIOECONOMIC GRIND HARDER THAN OTHERS

Image result for GOALS

“A thick-skinned path to success is tough for people with soft skin.”

As a young man pursuing my career as a writer, photographer, and filmmaker; I will be going through these up and down periods in my life. But what has prepared me for that was growing up in a poor household. With everything that is a downside of life at the bottom, there is this upside. And that upside is that you have this willingness to succeed that no one else has in life. So many people who aim to succeed leave their parents house and return after college having to move back home. But there are the ones who moving back home is not an option because home is not available anymore. These are the students who take college more serious and work through school rather than indulge in a social life. They realize that there is no backup after college and must be working to attain something.

But what are some other reasons as to why the kids born into a household of substantial means don’t have the true grit as the poor. And it goes back to the adversity. When you watch professional athletes, a lot of the greats have come from these poverty stricken environments. They have all the odds stacked up against them and they fight like their lives depend on it. How many well to do kids fight like their lives depend on it? It’s because they work to succeed, but they have a support system there to aid them. When you don’t have anything, and you are put in a position where you’re forced to be better, then you may ultimately win. It has a lot to do with survival. If you took a person from the upper class and told them to hunt in the safari of Africa for food it would be harder than a homeless man not knowing where his next meal will come from.

In the end, for the reasons above are the main reasons why some people of wealth cut their children off financially. Because they want their children to know how to face adversity. What if the family fortune is lost for some reason or another. Then what you’ll have is a self-destruct kid. They have never known what it was like to hustle in life. Now they have to do something and don’t know where to start. So you must throw them out into society and make them fend for themselves. If not, then you’ll turn into an enabler and it could ultimately hurt the child in the end.

THE HIGH COST OF NOTHING: WHY DOING SOMETHING IS WORTH MORE THAN DOING NOTHING

blackboard, board, chalk“I’m not guaranteed to succeed, so why try.”

At times you might figure, why bother trying to succeed in what it is you want to do in life. I should just get a day job and do that for life. There is no use trying to push toward something to only be let down in life. Yet if you don’t do anything with your life you will ultimately fail anyways. So why not push yourself to do well with the hopes of a successful outcome. And the main reason is that people don’t want to deal with the idea of failing. So we choose our paths in life that gives us the most safety. But safety and security is not necessarily the path that will lead to us being the best us. A safe secure life usually means lower to mid range pay and little to no time off of work.

And that is not a life so many people want, but wind-up having for themselves. And for the people that are willing to put the time into making themselves better, they generally are put into positions higher than those that don’t work at their future. And that’s another aspect of why people find it hard to work at their craft and play life safe. Putting the work into your future requires a lot of alone time to reflect and plan. Then you also have to take what you have planned and put it in motion. That’s where you see the difference between the people who can talk a good game, and those that actually go into the world and do. And the ones that do nothing, generally end up not doing anything in life. But what are some other reasons people tend to do nothing and play life safe or fail to succeed at anything.

In addition to the above reasons we choose to do nothing because of the outside influences. The people who say what you’re doing you’re not good enough. They are the ones that either don’t want you to succeed because they weren’t good enough; or they can’t bear to see anyone outshine them. So they try to knock you down to keep you from trying, and maybe succeeding at what they failed to accomplish. So with them as influences, you become in doubt, and soon give up on your ambitions. And this is when you make your fatal mistake. See, the end, it’s not about trying to impress the people around you. You are supposed to run your race in life. You also don’t want to not try out of fear of failure. Because the cost of doing something might overall be less costly than doing nothing at all.
