MAKING SOME GOOD MONEY: WHAT DOES IT MEAN

Man Holding Brown Leather Bi-fold Wallet With Money in It

“A lot to me, not much to you.”

income relativity

I live in New York City, a place where the income is so different from the rest of the country. But also the cost of living makes things also different. And with that said, we must have the conversation that talks about real money versus low income. And we have to understand what is a lot to some might be little to others. For example, $60,000 per year is not much in New York City, but a lot in Wisconsin where I come from. Then again, I am a single man with no children, so even in New York City $60,000 is good money in New York City for me.

kids kids kids

Are you a parent? If so, then you know that children and be quite expensive. And they are the ones that determine if you make real money. Now, at certain amounts of money, we know is amazing. Like athletes and entertainers, but most people are not them. So you have to look at life through a rational lens. And why is it so expensive to raise? It’s because you have to take into consideration neighborhoods, schools districts, clothes, food, health, etc. And that is something that can drive up any cost when looking at income.

making purchases

Now, here is the part where you can anticipate where you can see how much you can afford. Not just cost of living, but also where you can see what amenities the money can afford you. Because no one just wants to work and survive. We all have wants on top of needs. Just make sure you know what you can afford. Because anything beyond that point is living above your means. Then you find yourself in a weird predicament.

WORKING TO DEATH: HOW OUR WILLINGNESS TO EARN IS KILLING LVES.

Man With Hand on Temple Looking at Laptop

“Give it a rest.”

work no play

A lot of Americans in this country work not just because they want to, but have to work. The there are the people who work not because they have to but love their careers. They work and work because they want that almighty dollar. But never taking days off defeats the purpose of working for the money. And we are also killing ourselves to make that dollar in the process. Our health is deteriorating before our very eyes because we want that dollar. So what is it, why do we do it in the name of finances?

Hey what is wrong with making more money. And if you make more than what you need, then spend on the wants you have always wanted. But when you find yourself working and not living, years go by and you never have a fulfilled life. Trust and believe it’s hard to not stop making an income for yourself especially when so many people around you are not working. Because that is something in the back of my mind all the time. And when you are living in a place like New York City, you never want to not have in life. Doesn’t even have to be a lot, just always covering your ass.

laid off

What if I were to get laid off today. The average person if laid off today, they are homeless by the end of the month. So the majority of Americans actually live paycheck to paycheck. And that is what terrifies people so much that they work. I guess they figure it’s best to work and never have a life than to not work and not live at all.

HOW I’M GOING TO GET IT: MAKING MONEY WHEN YOU DON’T COME FROM MONEY

Man Holds 10 U.s Dollar Banknote

“How do I get it?”

from the bottom

Coming from a poor background, how does one go about making money in life? Or better yet, how does one set up their life so they can build what they want and sustain themselves in society financially? Because when you come from a poor background, you really don’t have a clue what it means to have money or make it. You have all these ideas as to how to make money. But there aren’t people around to show you the ropes. I know for me growing up, I came from a poor family and community. People’s views of making money is either struggle with no light at the end of the tunnel, or criminality as a means of getting by.

don’t pass of a good mentor

We look around for all these resources for trying to earn in society. But we always fail to utilize the people that are the closest to us. The ones who have went off to make themselves successful and now they can provide you with proper guidance. Now you have to put in a lot work yourself just to get their attention. But it should become a fluid relationship. Don’t come to them with nothing and don’t look for them to sit down and consistently show you things. Because then again, they have their own business to tend to as well. So learn not to be a pest when reaching out for help.

read and learn, really

People really know how to pass on the best way to make money in America. And that is good old fashion learning for yourself. Maybe 40 or 50 years ago you didn’t have many resources. Now there is enough information to put yourself in the know. The problem is that outside of people’s daily jobs, they don’t really put themselves in the know with the information out here. They simply live their lives and exist. Now, I can’t say that people have boring lives, some just haven’t found the thing they are truly good at in life. And problem is, most will never find that thing. But when you do find that thing, focus on it. Read and learn as much as possible. Because to make money and sustain you much have a base of knowledge.

GET RICH, LIVE POOR: WHY YOU SHOULD SPEND CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN YOU MAKE

Person Holding Debit Card

“Why go broke when you don’t have to?”

why we spend

We all love to shop til we drop. But when it comes to having money and retaining the money, we all have a hard time doing so. And that’s why I chose to discuss the idea of all of us spending less than we actually have in the bank. And the reason for this is that you don’t want to live beyond your means. As a matter of fact, you don’t want to buy anything toward the top of your budget. When you purchase something it should always be in context of the percentage of something you brought home. So if you make $40,000 per year, your car should be 7-10% of what you make in a year. But try explaining to someone that they should spend $2,800 to $4,000 on a car.

rainy day, better yet a hail storm

We have heard the phrase when it rains it pours. And that is this notion that when something bad happens it all falls down by the waist side. Sometimes the waist side is still too high for how bad things can get in life. So you want to have enough money saved up just in case something bad does happen. Never know what may transpire, so you want to give yourself some wiggle room. If you are living above what you make, then you will find yourself in a world of trouble if that time comes. And I don’t care if you make $75,000, live like you only make $30,000 to $40,000. You will be shocked by how much you save.

get out of your head

Remember I said prior that you want to spend less than what you make. People hear that they are about to make $100,000 in a year and go out and get a new car. Then they try to buy a condo, and vacation, and shop, and this and that. But what they should really be thinking is how can I save the most for when I need it. Doesn’t hurt to enjoy, but what you have to be thinking is long term. Especially if you are someone with children to support. You have to think about their futures in addition to your own. So spend wisely and cross the next few bridges even if they are there just in case something comes up.

MAKE THE MOVE: ARE YOU READY TO JUMP TO ANOTHER CITY FOR A JOB

Woman In Grey Shirt Holding Brown Cardboard Box

“Packed and ready to go.”

the jump

When I first moved to New York City was to attend graduate school pursuing my MBA in Management. And along the way I found myself getting into writing and filmmaking. Yet most people make the jump into a city for a job opportunity. But is this always the best options when choosing a career? Because most people want to find a job wherever it is they are from, or went to college. You’re from the state of Indiana, most people stay. You from Indiana and went to college in Miami, chances are you will live in Miami after college. But let’s assume for a moment you want to make the leap to a new city. How shall you prepare yourself?

the big city

For most people who move, they go from living in a small city to a big city, or big city to big city. Wherever you go, make sure you visit the location first to see if you’d like it. So many people move to a new location they hate. And even with a good job awaiting you, the location can make or break you. Meaning, the lifestyle of Los Angeles is different from the life a person living in Houston. You’re jumping from the liberal California coast to the conservative south. Another aspect of moving to the new city is making sure the money being offered will grant you the same, if not a better life. For example, if you are being offered $100,000 to work in New York City, but make $90,000 in Chicago. Staying in Chicago might be worth unless the new jump has other better incentives.

along for the ride

For me, moving to New York City was easier than someone in a relationship, with kids, or both. Imagine getting a great opportunity in another city, yet your spouse is doing well in the current city and the schools are good in the present location. And in this moment you could actually see families torn apart. Now, if you live here in New York City and the job is in New Jersey, then it’s not that big of a deal. But if you live in D.C., but the job is in Phoenix, that’s a problem. So hopefully you have an understanding person you’re dating or married to.

A WORLD OF WEED: HOW THE BUSINESS COULD REALLY PAN OUT

Shallow Focus Photography of Cannabis Plant

“Pass the dutchie.”

the dope game

Growing up for me in the inner city, I would see guys selling drugs on the street corner. And one of those drugs was marijuana. And now that states are passing laws stating you are allowed to smoke in small quantities, even profit, makes you wonder. How will this business model pan out in the long run once big businesses start to get involved. Now you’re talking about a multi-billion dollar industry that is going to be controlled by few players. But also, what will come of all these prison inmates who were sent to jail for marijuana charges.

laws and current inmates

There are men and women currently in jail for crimes associated with marijuana. So what will happen to them once the laws are fully passed through? Will the courts grant them clemency, or will they have to serve their time considering they were convicted under an old law? Because to now say it’s totally fine, you’re allowing those legal access to sell, while individuals sit in jail for the exact same crime. Then again, states are fine with the drug, but federally, there are still problems. So dispensary owners and smokers beware.

big business

You could make a lot of money if you have the ability to enter the industry and you have a good enough liquid asset. Because getting in early means collecting before everyone can get involved. So once the big boys come in, everything will change because they will have the capital needed to keep you form competing. Then again, who has a good $250,000 plus lying around to start in the game.

BROKE MAN’S MENTALITY: WHY PEOPLE COMING FROM POOR COMMUNITIES STAY POOR

Image result for poor communities

“How do you know, if you don’t know?”

urban economics

When you look at the landscape of the United States and the way the economics is broken down, you can’t help but to acknowledge the poverty of America. We have so much wealth and yet it’s in the hands of very few people in this country. But there are the success stories of people who come from poverty into prosperity. And they tend to live out their lives in prosperity.

But why do so many people make money and go back into poverty. Or better yet, why don’t most make it out of poverty?

the know

As a man who comes from the poverty level, I can tell you first hand that it’s a lot harder than just a bootstrap viewpoint. There are many parts to making it out of poverty. You have to be in the right schools, good home life, an innate ability to get things done, and a little bit of luck never hurt. All of these parts added up is what must happen to remove yourself from poverty.

But you have to also acknowledge another aspect of poverty. And that is that people who are poor tend to handle money in a very irresponsible manner as well.

living the life

I remember one day walking down the street here in New York City, and seeing two guys make an expensive purchase of a good from a high end retail store. But then they walked into a housing project. And it had me thinking, why are you spending thousands of dollars on clothes and living in public housing. And it has to do with not knowing how to utilize your dollars.

How do you spend a thousand dollars on a pair of shoes on Madison Avenue (NYC’s Rodeo Drive), and your living arrangements are poor. I have also seen luxury vehicles in parking lots of housing projects, yet Toyota, Dodge, Ford, and Nissan in the posh Upper East Side. It’s that being poor is tough enough, so people overcompensate so they don’t have to look poor.

But what it does is take you down an even darker road into debt.

poverty level

The below chart is of the breakdown for what is a household poverty income in 2018. The chart can be found on the Needy Meds website.

remove yourself

How do you keep yourself from being the person in the group of poor thinkers. Because when I get paid from work the first thought in my mind is paying bills. Some people think I need to go shopping at a retail store for goods. And there lies a portion of the problem, the mindset. Most people don’t think they have a mind for poverty, but they do. being born into wealth helps, but a mindset for building helps a lot. Problem is, everyone is not intuitive people.
