WORKING SMART NOT HARD: WHAT TO DO NOT HOW LONG YOU WORK ON IT

Grayscale Photography of Man Stretching on Chair in Front Computer Monitor

“Doesn’t take all day to get the job done.”

pulling long hours

You might think that working for hours on hours will be the best way to ensure you become successful in your career. But the reality is that working smarter doesn’t always mean the one who works more time. Because you have to think about what your time is spent doing. For me, my long hours are not continuous work. My long hours is me trying to come up wit ideas for writing and also putting together my various projects I will be working on throughout this year. So that is the long hours that I spend in the computer lab. All the while I am working my day job in pursuit of my dreams in life.

keeping an open sound mind

My mind is open, so open that when I am writing I have to be careful that it does not wonder too much. Since I am creative writing, I like to get into these scenarios when I am writing, and tend to go off and lose my time. There have been times I have been locked into a scenario for hours and didn’t realize the time lost until the sun was going down. So this may be a case of working smart because I am into the scenario. But at the same time, if nothing is written then you can realistically say that time was lost and that wasn’t smart at all. It’s why I try to manage my time by keeping my mind focus.

what’s the task

You may be sitting down working on trying to complete your task. But you have to think to yourself what it is you’re exactly putting all this time and effort into to make better. The task that you are working on has to be worth the energy otherwise it’s considered lost productivity. And when the productive time is lost, it was a waste to even sit down in the first place. So know that the there is a sound problem that is worth you tackling before continuing forward.

INTO THE UNKNOWN: WHAT OUR TRUE FEARS ARE ABOUT LIVING

Man Wearing Grey Shirt Standing on Elevated Surface

“What will tomorrow bring is always scary.”

Growing up as a child, we have all these different places we see ourselves in life. We see ourselves being the top person in our career field. We see ourselves happily married with children. We see ourselves living this all-around great life, that sometimes doesn’t quite pan out that way. We see ourselves in all these positions, yet when it comes time to actually step into society, we have a hard time coming to grips with the real world. In the real world, things don’t turn out how we always plan them. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and how you deal with the adversity says a lot about who are you as a person. How will you respond if life doesn’t turn out how you thought it would turn out?

Life is not this straight path that leads to this pot of gold. You might go to school, get out, get a good job, and in a matter of months have no place of employment and no place to live. How do you deal with this when it comes your way? What do you do when face with no job and no means of survival? There is no playbook when dealing in life, this is something that happens on the fly. We have all these theories on how to deal until it happens. That’s when panic sets in, and you start to make decisions that could worsen your situation. And at that point you realize what true adulthood is all about. Your biggest fears are right in front of you. Life has eaten you up and spit you out.

It’s tough because you look at all those people around you who never work as hard as you, yet you are the one who manages to go through so much. And then you’ll find yourself asking questions as to why you have to deal with such adversity, yet the people who don’t work as hard get to coast through life. But that you don’t want, what you never want to do, is make your disdain at your situation make you angry at another person’s life. Number one, never make the assumption that their life is going well. And number two, your life could actually worsen from where it currently is because you are so focused on them. Yet it’s hard to do so when you’re going through so much.

See, in the end, that unknown that you’re entering that is life can be petrifying. Even when you are prepared to live your life, you still have fears about each and every day. You don’t know when the supervisor will come in and say, “We had to let you go.” You don’t know when a simple hospital visit could be a longer stay that reveals a terminal situation. Yet thinking about it daily will also drive you crazy. So you live, going to sleep waking up, not knowing what will come of each day. But it is also that unknown that strangely enough makes you feel alive. That makes us appreciate everyday, because after all, it could be your last: last in a relationship, last on a job, last in life.

VISIONARY: HOW YOU SEE LIFE SAYS A LOT ABOUT HOW FAR YOU MIGHT GO IN LIFE

Related image

“Do you see life as a whole, or part of a whole?”

Since moving to New York City, I have consistently been motivated to become a working screenwriter/filmmaker and author. And how I see the world is why I feel ultimately I will succeed in my writing. So I view the world as a place that can only get better from where I was yesterday. So whatever I was doing last year is helping to set me up with what I am doing now, to succeed tomorrow. But what is it about some people who just don’t see the world in the most positive light? They only have something to say that is shrouded in hurt and pain. There is nothing they say that points to wanting a better life. Scary thing is that they would prefer you follow them and how they see the world. And God forbid you ignore their wishes and go off to become successful. They will come up with every reason as to why you were in a different position than themselves.

But truth be told, you don’t need to be born with money to propel yourself to the next level. Your mind frame says a lot about you; your vision of the world. The above photo is of a woman’s hands viewing the wide open landscape wit her hands creating a box. It’s something that directors do in movies to get the idea of something that is in frame that they want to convey in a film scene. But when they move their hands, they say action and role camera. Imagine walking around society looking through this box. That is how so many negative people see life because they refuse to move their hands to see the full landscape. Their boundaries are everything in the box and when you move outside the box, something must be wrong with you. How dare you operate outside the box.

Well, operating outside the box is the reason why the filmmaker was able to sit down and create the film. The in frame box gives you a more heightened sense of what is going in the movie scene. But in life there is so much more than the square your hands create. Now, can anyone drop their hands so they see the broad spectrum of life? Of course they can, but it requires giving up the way you currently think and feel. And no one wants to believe that their thought process is wrong. People want to believe that the reason for their lives going the way it’s going is forces, coincidentally enough, outside the box. But they don’t address what could be addressed because not addressing the truth head on allows them to be romanticized with their own bullshit. So they stay living in a trance, yet wonder why they go nowhere.

In the end, shifting your perception is what allows you to move forward in life. It’s like how people who live in poverty say that it’s easy to say when you have money. But it’s the mind that makes up the people moving into a more stable situation. If you are willing to put yourself in the know, you can have a lot. But the mind is not freely thinking enough because people cannot see past their current position.

PURSUE OR PAUSE: WHAT MAKES US NOT PURSUE

Image result for PURSUING

“I’m afraid to pursue, but more afraid to not.”

Moving to New York City to attend graduate would have been a very scary move for so many, but not me. I just came out to the big city back in 2011 and have been here ever since. But I am also in the process of pursuing something else and that is screenwriting, filmmaking, and soon photography. These are career paths that so many for so long have strayed away from because the failure rate is so high. But why make the decision to not pursue something just because you’re afraid of failure. If you want to succeed at a high level you have to jump off the cliff at some point. So what is the problem with so many people and this failure to step out into the world?

Well, one of the reasons we as people decide not to pursue our dreams and play life safe is because we have hard wired in us on a nature level to not pursue things that are dangerous. It’s one of the reasons man has survived so long on this planet, is because we don’t take a lot of scary risks. We learn that taking the most basic of routes through life may not provide you with the happiness, but you are more secure. But yet, there are those who do step out into the world and take the plunge. Those who feel they can change the world, and more often than not, they do change the world. So what is it about them that they are able to change the world?

For starters, these are typically people who already have to some degree a level of intellect that they possess in something. And from there it’s all about unlocking that inner thing that makes them, them. Now once you unlock that inner you, most people will mistaken what you are for arrogance, antisocial at times, or crazy. They just don’t understand that when you finally figure out your thing it becomes more of an obsession. And to them, they think about life -pertaining to their day jobs. So they can’t for the life of themselves understand why you are going so hard or talking with such confidence. Little do they know you have unlocked you. Unlike them who are afraid to pursue that which could make them really successful, they run.

They run because it’s not necessarily the success that they fear, but what comes with it. Because the greater you are, the more people expect, the greater you have to continue to become. So that on top of failure, we as humans just play life safe. But those who pursue, not only do they free up a next generation, but the next generation go on to make something great for those that come after them. And anything great inevitably contributes to the dominant society. So in the end, which will you become, the person that pursue or the one that pause. But whatever the case may be, the choice is yours, and be able to live with the choices you make in life.

WHEN MINIMAL DEFEATS MAXIMUM: HOW LIVING WITH LESS TAUGHT ME A VALUABLE LESSON

apartment, architecture, ceiling

“You were brought in this world with nothing, yet not you need everything.”

I remember when in a previous post I stated I grew up poor. I said how much I wanted to be wealthy because I grew up with less. Since I became an adult, I realized what I want, and it is not entirely money. Now don’t get me wrong, I do want to have a comfortable life. But it is not the end all be all. I have to have a career I love, otherwise the monetary gain is not even worth the work. So when I decided to pursue a career in writing, I knew it would be a long term build-up. The climb would involve me giving up a lot to pursue my career interest. And that minimal lifestyle gave me an insight into my life and life itself. Having less makes you focus on more important aspects of life.

For starters, my mind was clear now that I was living with less. The only thoughts that occupy my mind are the thoughts of creating my next ideas. And it has given me a whole new outlook on life. I still look at luxury goods and muse at the shiny aspects of their form. I can’t help but be impressed with the likes of a Ferrari, Rolls Royce, or my favorite, the Bentley. But overall, if I never drive any of these I am just as happy. Even if I have the money to purchase one of these foreign cars. I am the type of person who has the money for something, but don’t have the guts to commit all the way through. Where the impulse person feels like they are missing out on something by not buying I am the opposite. I feel like I am wasting by buying something unless I need it.

Then again, maybe it’s because I not only don’t need, but never wanted it. We accumulate things in our lives just because it’s almost as if it’s what we’re supposed to do. We’re supposed to buy the biggest house our money affords us. We’re supposed to take the most exotic vacations around the globe. And hey, if you can afford it, why not fly private. But if we don’t buy any of these goods or services what does that say about our current economic position. Because as much as I don’t like it, image plays a major role in our daily lives. So we feel we have to portray a certain image to be liked. But that wanting to be liked comes at not only a monetary cost, but personally we are constantly trying to satisfy others while letting ourselves fall by the waist side. So what is so great about minimalism?

Minimalism gives you a chance to observe what’s most important. You are forced to look within yourself a lot deeper. And you also have to remove yourself away from the worldly tangibles that inhabit the Earth. In the end, there is nothing wrong with a non-minimalist life. I am merely saying give it a chance, or better yet, not to let the non-minimalism destroy you. You should want to accumulate things for wanting to and not the acceptance of. Because existing for things only and other people will only make your full life seem empty.

THE HIGH COST OF NOTHING: WHY DOING SOMETHING IS WORTH MORE THAN DOING NOTHING

blackboard, board, chalk“I’m not guaranteed to succeed, so why try.”

At times you might figure, why bother trying to succeed in what it is you want to do in life. I should just get a day job and do that for life. There is no use trying to push toward something to only be let down in life. Yet if you don’t do anything with your life you will ultimately fail anyways. So why not push yourself to do well with the hopes of a successful outcome. And the main reason is that people don’t want to deal with the idea of failing. So we choose our paths in life that gives us the most safety. But safety and security is not necessarily the path that will lead to us being the best us. A safe secure life usually means lower to mid range pay and little to no time off of work.

And that is not a life so many people want, but wind-up having for themselves. And for the people that are willing to put the time into making themselves better, they generally are put into positions higher than those that don’t work at their future. And that’s another aspect of why people find it hard to work at their craft and play life safe. Putting the work into your future requires a lot of alone time to reflect and plan. Then you also have to take what you have planned and put it in motion. That’s where you see the difference between the people who can talk a good game, and those that actually go into the world and do. And the ones that do nothing, generally end up not doing anything in life. But what are some other reasons people tend to do nothing and play life safe or fail to succeed at anything.

In addition to the above reasons we choose to do nothing because of the outside influences. The people who say what you’re doing you’re not good enough. They are the ones that either don’t want you to succeed because they weren’t good enough; or they can’t bear to see anyone outshine them. So they try to knock you down to keep you from trying, and maybe succeeding at what they failed to accomplish. So with them as influences, you become in doubt, and soon give up on your ambitions. And this is when you make your fatal mistake. See, the end, it’s not about trying to impress the people around you. You are supposed to run your race in life. You also don’t want to not try out of fear of failure. Because the cost of doing something might overall be less costly than doing nothing at all.

I’M NOT YOUR MOMMY AND DADDY: WHY THE WORLD OWES YOU NOTHING

Image result for ENTITLEMENT

“Always got your hand out.”

In the household where I come from, I was under the impression that no one in this world owed you anything. As a child, my mother let us know that I am doing for you while you’re in this house. But the moment you become an adult, you’re on your own, unless you’re in school or making an effort to be something in life. Yet there was something my mother never wanted to do. She never wanted to start this whole road of something for nothing mindset. Because like I said, the world owes you nothing. Anything in this world you want, you had better be ready to go out and stake your own claim. But where does this entitlement come from in our society?

It hasn’t always been here like it is today. You had prior generations that went out and worked at a young age. As a matter of fact, you had kids in the early 1900’s working in coal minds side by side with their parents. Now days are spent playing video games on televisions or computers. Letting time pass you by while engaging in wasteful activities on cell phones. Which brings us to the first reason why people feel entitled. The technology in America has sped so much up, people think that there should be something allotted to them quick and instant. They don’t realize that the technology itself that speeds so much up took a lot of time to build. And when I say time, I mean some stuff as long as decades to build.

With the click of a mouse or the touch of the screen, we are instantly taken to our destination. That can make people think something should be given to them pretty fast. But it’s not just the technology that makes people think they are owed something. This same mind frame exist in the employment field as well. This whole my 75% is your 100%, and we all should be given something when we are clearly not putting in the same amount of work. A trend that has started from schools in children and has followed all the way into their adulthood. Now that you’re in the real world, you don’t realize that you’re not special. No one is going to hold you close and tell you everything is going to be alright. And that’s when you learn you’re not this beautiful and talented person, but more so that you are mundane because you have not put real time and energy into being great at what you do.

And you would think with what has been said so far, the owing stops there; no it doesn’t. People feel that you have made money, so it is your job to give them something. In their minds, “You have it, why not give me something.” Then they try to use the excuse of God blesses you to help other people. When in reality, that’s true, but there is something they are leaving out. God blesses people to help those who have made an initiative to put themselves in a better place. Giving people things without making them earn it causes you to be a crutch and it cripples them. It also creates a lack of respect that the person has for something you do give to them.

See, in the end, you want something in life, you have to be willing to go into the world and stake your own claim. Because the only person who has a stake in interest in you doing anything is you. I used to ask questions of the elders about back in their young days. I remember how my late grandmother would say growing up in the South, everybody had some plot of land. Didn’t matter how big or small, it still fed your family. And it was important you tended to your land since it depended on how you and your family ate. Because if your crop didn’t come through, your family didn’t eat. You were not owed anything and no one cared. Life was tough, but it was fair because we all have the capability to get out the bed and work. What’s that saying, we all have 24 hours in a day, what you choose to do with yours is your business.
