WORKING SMART NOT HARD: WHAT TO DO NOT HOW LONG YOU WORK ON IT

Grayscale Photography of Man Stretching on Chair in Front Computer Monitor

“Doesn’t take all day to get the job done.”

pulling long hours

You might think that working for hours on hours will be the best way to ensure you become successful in your career. But the reality is that working smarter doesn’t always mean the one who works more time. Because you have to think about what your time is spent doing. For me, my long hours are not continuous work. My long hours is me trying to come up wit ideas for writing and also putting together my various projects I will be working on throughout this year. So that is the long hours that I spend in the computer lab. All the while I am working my day job in pursuit of my dreams in life.

keeping an open sound mind

My mind is open, so open that when I am writing I have to be careful that it does not wonder too much. Since I am creative writing, I like to get into these scenarios when I am writing, and tend to go off and lose my time. There have been times I have been locked into a scenario for hours and didn’t realize the time lost until the sun was going down. So this may be a case of working smart because I am into the scenario. But at the same time, if nothing is written then you can realistically say that time was lost and that wasn’t smart at all. It’s why I try to manage my time by keeping my mind focus.

what’s the task

You may be sitting down working on trying to complete your task. But you have to think to yourself what it is you’re exactly putting all this time and effort into to make better. The task that you are working on has to be worth the energy otherwise it’s considered lost productivity. And when the productive time is lost, it was a waste to even sit down in the first place. So know that the there is a sound problem that is worth you tackling before continuing forward.

CAREER: INTO THE FUTURE

Close-up of Hand Holding Text over Black Background

“Where do you see yourself?”

times to come

Ever since we were young children, we all had these ideas of where we would see ourselves in the years to come. In elementary school we have one idea, then high school another. But as we enter life the views change into something else. And for me, I wanted to be an attorney in elementary, a business executive after that, and now that I am an adult I found my calling in the arts. We go through these different changes in life because you have no clue who you are or what you want as a child. You have these visions because you don’t have a firm grasp on the world. Your strengths and weaknesses have not been put to the test yet. So it’s easy to say what you want until you are challenged.

what’s your plan

How can you see yourself anywhere in life without a plan to go along with what it is you are hoping to accomplish? Just saying I want to do something is not good enough. You must have something laid out and follow the plan all the way through. Because even with just a plan, you have to execute. And these are the steps that make it hard for people to sit down and focus in life. So many people don’t have a plan and never fully execute. Now, for those that do, they are one step closer to being where they want to be.

nurture your talent

I know I want to be a writer, filmmaker, and photographer, so I am constantly working on my craft. If I am not writing my screenplays or book ideas, it’s my blog, or when I am not writing it’s me out into the city taking photos. But outside the two, it’s my filmmaking. And that is what you must do, it has to be a daily thing you do. Once you start to get into that routine feeling change something. I recently just cut down the number of topics for my blog and changed to website appearance. It gives it a new look to the consistent writing everyday. Otherwise you will start to get that mundane feeling an get sick of it.

perspective

What are you good at? What can you handle? Do you have the sticktoitiveness to keep going? The idea of being somewhere in life feels so much better than actually pushing to be there in life. Because the vision is exciting, but the climb is not fun at all. You might hear people say they are in love with the process, but truth be told, who truly loves the process. Wouldn’t we love to have the idea and there it is on paper. Doesn’t work like that, so you have to put in the time to get where you want to be. And also have the rational mindset to know what you can do and your willingness to get there, as well as being practical about the time-frame to get there.

FOOT RACE: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THOSE CLOSE TO YOU ARE LEFT BEHIND IN YOUR PURSUITS

Athletes Running on Track and Field Oval in Grayscale Photography

“Run your race.”

running toward first

In the course of trying to climb toward the success you want in your career, you are going to run into a problem. And I am not just talking about a problem in your career pursuits, but one more personal. As you climb you will notice there may be people who are not moving in the same direction as you are in life. So what do you do when those around you, close to you, are not making those same strides. You might have to make a choice to either encourage them to be better or leave them behind. Now, as I say this , I don’t mean you must leave people behind because you’re more successful. I am talking about the gap that will widen in respects to some people around you.

the gap

In the previous post I spoke about the gap widening. And that gap means you and your friends entering life at the same time. And some of you might climb quicker than others. Where you might find yourself having to leave friends behind means the slowing down to let others play catch up. That level of compromise is not something I would advise you to do. You never compromise your success because others might feel some sort of way. For example, you’re about the start a race with everyone at the start line. In the course of the race, you find yourself in 4th place, but you have friends in 5th and 6th. Never slow up to let them catch up. Because 7th and 8th are near and once they pass all three of you are in the back. They’re happy because you’re together, but you could have won. So what’s more important 1st place with few people around or last with your closest friends.

leaving those behind

It’s easy to say, just leave people behind, but it’s much more difficult than that. Especially if the people you plan on leaving behind are friends and family. How do you know if someone is just not where you’re at versus being a ball and chain? Certain indications will let you know when they are a hindrance to your progress. When you’re progressing and they throw out hints about rarely seeing you. They should know that you are trying to build a life for yourself. Or when they take little jabs at the vacations you take or items you purchase. You are not picking up on it because of the sarcasm. But you never want someone to see your success as their failure. Otherwise you will have to remove yourself from the social circle.

FAILURE IN PURSUIT FOR SUCCESS: HOW TO MAINTAIN WHEN FACING FAILURE IN LIFE

black-and-white, depressed, depression

“Keep forging ahead.”

living in the paradigm

While in our pursuit for success, we often find ourselves wallowing in our own self pity. Why, well because in the paradigm of trying to succeed, we are not able to see success as much we are able to see the failure right in front of us. We don’t see the small successes and gains along the pathway because we’re stuck in our hurt. We also don’t see the gains because we are constantly chasing the bigger picture. So you don’t see the small gains when you’re focused on the greater things you seek to achieve.

be easy

Try not to get too caught up in the fact that you are not making the gains you want just yet. Those internal feeling can manifest themselves outwardly. And from here on out, you will experience yourself moving further away from your point in life. So instead of focusing on the fact you are 10 steps ahead, you inadvertently pushed yourself 12 steps back. So it’s ok to be a critic of yourself. But don’t push it too far because you will become your biggest enemy in the process.

more success equals more work

People seem to think that once they arrive where they want to be that the work is complete. They have not made it, they have simply arrived at a certain point. So now, there is constant work just to maintain that point in your life. And here is and even bigger true testament to your standing power. Because a lot of people fall from grace because they cannot maintain their position. They can not keep up with the constant for more and more. So you have to work for years just to make yourself strong enough to deal with the wave ahead.

YOUR DREAMS ARE YOUR DREAMS: UNDERSTANDING YOUR GOALS IN LIFE ARE ACHIEVED BY YOU

Gray Dream Freestanding Letters

“They’re yours and yours only.”

your dreams

We all close our eyes and see this place where we want to be. And in my previous post I discussed how we have to think in scope of reality in respect to our dreams. But we also have to acknowledge the fact that our dreams are our dreams. And that no one else has any interest in you achieving your dreams but you. For some reason people think someone is supposed to help them. And notice I said supposed to help. Help is voluntary, not obligatory.

open hands

My career pursuits are very difficult, but not once do I look at other people and assume they should be helping me. Trust and believe, if I do get aid, I’m gladly going to take it if the help is worth it. But at the same time, when you look at someone with hands open wide as if they should be doing something for you, you are setting yourself up to lose. Because parents jobs are to give you something in your hand when you reach out for it. But there also lies part of the problem. Parents will give and give, and now the child thinks that’s an aspect of life. Yet they have actually been set up inadvertently for failure.

i could care less

Me, the world; no one gives a shit about your dreams. Pardon my language, but fuck your hopes and dreams. And that doesn’t mean I don’t care about you. But understand when something is just a dream, but also understand you are the builder. Mainly, realize it’s just a dream that isn’t coming true. That means being honest with yourself and acknowledging that you are not good at something. You can have dreams of being a runway model, but when you are a female standing 5’5″, sorry sweetie, it aint happening. When you’re a man and you want to be in the NBA, but you can barely dribble a ball and stand 5’8″, find a new dream. That’s why I say I don’t care about your dreams. Know when they are unrealistic and understand that it’s your life not anyone else’s.

make it work

This brings me back to a speech Denzel Washington gave to a group of theatre students on dreams and goals. He stated that, “True desire in the heart, for anything that is good, is God’s proof to you, set before hand that it’s already yours.” But then he said you have to now claim it. And that’s where people fall short, claiming it. The consistency of showing up daily with no reward, but small strides to success is tough for them. But the one who puts in the work over time ultimately reaps the benefit.

MARKETING ME: PUTTING YOURSELF INTO POSITION TO SUCCEED

business, close-up, commerce

“Knowing yourself will go a long way.”

The year 2018 will be a pretty productive year for me because I am changing up a lot of my work so that I can put myself in a better position to grow my platform. Those platforms are my WordPress blog, Instagram, my podcast show, screenplays, one year research on my documentary, and buzz around my novel and book of short stories which could potentially be done by the end of 2018, early 2019. It has taken me a while, but I am finally starting to get the hang of this digital marketing, and creating meaningful content. It’s why I have shifted from just posting photos on Instagram to including hashtags. I used to just free write anything, to next year, I want to incorporate more video content to my blogs. The podcast I want to do two nights a week, I already have pre-planned the episodes. It will be a podcast about motivating and inspiring people in life. So, as the year wraps, everyone is busy buying Christmas presents, while I am getting pumped for 2018.

Now, in regards to marketing myself, there are very few things I remember from graduate school, but the four P’s are one of them in particular. The four P’s that make up the marketing mix: product, placement, price, and promotion. Another aspect of my MBA studies I remember are certain aspects of the Integrated Marketing Communication and how that can grow a business. Now, when I first started writing, I never thought about it as a business. Yet the more I began to see myself going into the direction of a writing career, that’s when it dawned on me. That there are so many writers out here, that if I want to be noticed, I’m going to have to reach back into my marketing experience. I’m so focused on the craft of being a great writer, that I almost forgot how hard it is to get noticed. There are 250,000 scripts written for films, thousands of podcast shows, 25,000 photographers just here in New York City, and don’t bring up authors writing books.

Now there is one thing that I have over the majority of them: marketing. And the marketing piece is something that has taken me time to figure out. Don’t get me wrong I still need work, and I am not some marketing genius, but what I have learned so far I can harness to grow my platforms. You might ask, “I thought you came to New York for filmmaking and writing?” And I did, I have been working on the craft for quite a while now. Yet the craft only constitutes for a small percentage of the bigger picture. As a matter of fact, the craft is only 10%, the other 90% is the business. The problem is, is that most writers are not marketers, most filmmakers are not marketers, and most photographers are not marketers. You have to put yourself into position to win and a lot can’t work the system. I started at age 25/26 years of age on this journey, and I am now understanding how to kind of work this machine.

Another helpful note is to build a team. But I can’t assemble a team of people because I need to be a me first and get my stuff in order. Because in order to have a team you have to add your formidable contribution to the team. In my role, I want to be a team leader, so I need to understand how each piece moves before engaging a team. This way, when it’s time to move, I can move. In the end, this process has already taken me about six years, and I can feel that progress. I have put myself on a ten year window to break into my career. So to everyone else, ten years is a long time, but now it’s time for me to make even better moves than before.

LEVEL TO LEVEL: HOW GOING FROM ONE SOCIOECONOMIC POSITION TO ANOTHER FORCES A NEW PERCEPTION

Related image

“Once you know better, you do better.”

I come from a socioeconomic environment known as the working poor. And I have been in his space for my entire life. But in the recent years, I have been working to remove myself form this space of poverty. And what does that mean, it simply means changing your perception in how you see the world around you. Once that perception changes about the world, new opportunities open up to you. Now in the beginning, it may seem like you’re not making any strides. But rest assured, if you’re putting in the time and energy necessary for the climb, then you are in position to do better in life. You are in position to do better financially, physically, and spiritually. Yet, what is it about people that never leave their position and why must you change the way you see the world? People not leaving their position has to do with a state of mind, but why you must change your perception has to do with understanding the repercussions of your actions.

What do I mean by the consequences of my actions? Well, once you cross over into the new socioeconomic environment, you have no choice but to shift your perception. And there is a reason, it’s because you had to shift your perception before getting to this new point. So if you grew up poor, you had no choice but to change to become Middle Class and stay in the middle. Now, here is the bit of hole in the logic I just stated. You have to shift your mind to make more money, not really. Because you have lottery winners, athletes, and entertainers. Now the lotto winner won by luck, but there had to be some form of shift to be great athletes and entertainers, but the monetary build really falls by the waist side. So when they make a lot of money, they go broke quicker than it took to get the money. Because they fail to put themselves in the know to shift their perception on money.

Now once you go from Middle Class to Upper Class, you have to really structure your mind. The way I see it, it’s like crossing a bridge. The poor person says, “I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.” The person in the middle says, “I’ll plan for that bridge, even if it’s there, I still plan in case it’s not present.” And lastly, the man or woman that is rich are the ones building the bridges everyone beneath them are going to have to cross. So when you are making wealth for yourself, taking business advice from someone who is poor may not be the best decision to make in life. Because if were as simple as they think it is to make money, they wouldn’t be poor. They might say it’s because they don’t have money, and that statement explains why they’re poor. You don’t need money if you have great ideas that have value. You’ll get the money if you have something that can make money. Why, someone will invest in you.

And in the end, we have to shift our perceptions anyways with regards to the world around us. People who don’t, possess a lack of growth in their lives. That lack of growth will quickly turn into self-loathing and depression. Next, they’ll start to reject the people around them who have went off into life and planned. Remove yourself from these people because they mean you no good.
