INDEPENDENT DOWNSIDES DURING HARD TIME

“Moving forward.”

WHEN ROUGH GETS ROUGHER

Ever been in a position where you have to choose between being totally independent or needing someone’s aid? How about being on your own and getting hit by hard times and being in a place where you can’t easily bounce back. And here is when you realize that you may have been better off in a relationship. This way you can split the cost of survival with someone. When you are independent you take on all the burden. It sounds good to be on your own but when you see the hit on your existence you start thinking. And no other time is this true than now. We are dealing with a pandemic that has shut down the system. So where do you turn?

QUARANTINE GIVES TIME TO THINK

When you are out of work especially now, you are forced to sit with your own thoughts. And if you are single with no kids then you have to sit at home with limited resources. Limitations you wouldn’t have with someone else. Because with someone else you split the difference.  It’s what makes a person at ease a little more when they are able to receive help from someone close. But for a person like me, my life is all too unpredictable. I could be with or without in an instant. So why do we pump up independence? Because you get further with more help. It’s because we think it makes us stronger by building alone.

BUILD A BASE

Learn to put people around you that are going in your direction. This will help you in your time of need.  Being alone especially in a quarantined like situation is not good. I live alone in a city but I get help in bad times. Yet so many don’t get anything.

NO WORK DURING QUARATINE

“Where do I turn?”

THE MELTDOWN

The recent outbreak of the Corona Virus stemming from a small local marketplace in Wuhan China has put the world on lockdown. And as a citizen of New York City, this city has been the hardest in America. And with that, has come a wave of unemployment. It has now left people from all over the country wondering what to do now. Because I know for me, I still have a job. But so so many that’s not the case. I have never been in this position so it’s kind of a no man’s land. And for most people this is a new reality. So, let’s go through the steps to being able to get yourself through this troubling time? The first step is to apply for unemployment.

UNEMPLOYMENT UNDER COVID-19

In order to apply for unemployment, there are a number of steps to go through when filing. The first step is to go to the Department of Labor and sign up for an account. You will have temporary password sent to your email account. Sign into your account and then you’ll be prompted to create a new password. Once into the account tou created, understand that you have a specific time period to call or file. That is based off of your last name which means you call corresponding to that date. For example, my last name is a J, that means I call on Tuesday. So when you call, be prepared to wait a while.

BE PRECISE WITH INCOME

You have to know before calling how much time you work and the amount of money you make in a two week span. This is important because then they’ll be able to calculate what your unemployment can be. Now, they will look into you, and if you’re off, the process takes longer. So be open and honest up front so the process goes a little smoother. And if you manage to go through the process and get unemployment, remember it’s only 55% at most of your income. This is not meant for you to be unemployed. This is why the percent gets cut in half. It’s to encourage working. Now, this situation is difficult because the government shut down the country. This forced people to lose jobs. So it’s no fault of the unemployed. Yet, the percentage still stands.

A WHOLE NEW WORLD

Americans have not experienecd this much lost since 2008 when the economic recession forced out of work and out of their homes. Only this time it’s at no fault of the people. And the help which people will get is minimal and one time only. Now, the market go back to its original point, yes. It may take a year or more. The nation will return to success. But for now it’s going to be a struggle.

I NEED MORE: WHEN CAREER IS NOT ENOUGH

“I want more.”

OUTSIDE THE 9-5

We work our jobs, have goods, some more than good, but it is not enough to keep us happy. And that is something that so many people can’t understand especially if you make a lot of money. People automatically feel if you have money, what is there to complain about. Well, there is a lot to complain if you don’t have much going on outside the day job. So many of us, get up and go to work, but that’s it. Our work is what defines us, which can be a bit of a problem. So make sure you’re doing things that can make you happy once you come home from work.

TIME WAITS FOR NO MAN

Whatever you do people, just be sure that it is worth the fight. And the reason being is because you don’t want your life to have meant nothing. So many people, especially now, they fight for their careers, but then their lives lack. It amounts to nothing more than just a check, which no one will remember after you’re dead and gone. And the hard part is that you can never get those moments back again. Those tactile moments that move you forward. Hold on to them for as long as possible.

LOCATE THE SOURCE

The vast majority of what you do is predicated on your career. So when your job is not enough it starts to eat away at you. Because if so much is about what you do, then outside is so empty, you will never reach that place of where you want to be. So harness that something you are looking for in life, it will make you happy along with the work.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH A JOB?

Man Holding Drinking Glass

“A check is a check.”

HONEST LIVING

You get up and go to work everyday. It’s not the most amount of money, but you are able to buy the things you need to survive. Now, some may look at that think to themselves it could be perceived as problematic. Especially considering how unguaranteed the workplace is today. But there is nothing wrong with wanting to have a job that is a little more stable on a daily basis. And there is nothing wrong with knowing there is something there every two weeks. That’s consistent income could be comforting to most. But the reality is that so many jobs are here one day and gone the next. So there is just way too much doubt and risk associated with having just one job. And for most people in the foreseeable future , they will have some sort of outside income making money.

CHECK TO BANK TO BILLS TO NEEDS TO WANTS

When you get paid from your job, most people have direct deposit. You already have what your money is going toward. It goes from the bank, to setting aside the funds for rent, then you have your utilities, food, transportation, and your personals. After the needs of your household is paid, then most people focus on the wants in their life like the leisure activities. And this is why so many people are broke for the most part. They live check to check because they want to live while surviving. And you have to be careful because you have to always plan for the worse. You never know what might happen in the future. You not only could lose your job and but you could also get sick which could be costly.

THE REALITY AMONGST THE FEAR

Now, the reality of jobs are that most people are not going to lose their job. Most people will have something that they call work everyday. The only thing that is scary is that you are not in the know, and assuming something is always there. And like I said for most people it is, but some won’t. Only thing is that, you don’t know who that some will be.

HOLD THE PHONE: WAITING TO ENTER YOUR CAREER INTEREST

“Move around first.”

explore first

You wan to embark on a career but you just aren’t ready. Fine, a lot of young people don’t know what they want to do, especially right out of college. So the best thing to do is to get out and travel. Move around the country, maybe even outside the country. Because this will give you some time to think about your future. Hell, even some people have been known to find what they want to do once they do travel. Because once you do find your thing in life, it will be work, work, work, to build and even more to maintain. So doesn’t hurt getting and finding yourself.

ambiguously work

Take on jobs at times that you might have thought you would never take on. This will give you range once you do figure out the thing you like to do. Having a wide range of experiences is good for trying to expand and break out into the world. Now, I would still do things that will keep you somewhat close to the things you want to do. For example, take on a few internships or fellowship opportunities. That will also give you an eye opener into the things you might want to do with your life.

get your heart broken

No one intentionally goes out into the world with the idea of getting hurt in a relationship or friendship. But that heart break might be the set back that allows you to fight through adversity. At such a young age, you have never been through real trauma, and building a career means true hard ache and pain. And personal conflicts tend to be more painful than career at times. So dealing with the stress of losing someone this close will aid you overcoming obstacles in life.
