COMING TO FRUITION: HOW HUMANS CREATED CULTURE

Clay Pot Lot

“We have for more than pride.”

the evolution of us having it

Throughout human history, of building civilizations we have consistently contributed to our worldwide culture. But in the beginning of time, we were unaware that we were even creating culture. That’s right, the human brain had not fully evolved, and we were just creating things we needed out of necessity. We might create a eating utensil, then someone else somewhere else might create one as well. Then over time we go back as anthropologist and see how different groups created what they built. That is how we are able to see how the evolution of culture had taken hold. Then once we started developing language we gave it a name that can be translated eventually into many languages.

i’m hungry, i need shelter, i need clothes

If you’re curious as to why we need culture. Well, we don’t need culture, it just sort of came out of needs. If you lived in Africa, your culture is going to seem a lot more primitive than Europe because of a few factors. Clothing is more of a need in Europe because of climate and more scarce resources. Africa is thee most abundant resource place on Earth. And when food needed, during the distant past there were oasis of plants, wildlife may not have always been the first choice. Given where you live, your culture might have also been shaped by the resources around to build a shelter.

interconnected species

The fact that we were evolving and creating our own tribes and identities, goes to show that we are the make up for what was supposed to be culture in the world. Meaning, if I am in Africa, someone else in Europe, someone else in Asia, and we are creating shelter, clothes, figuring out food for self, then the DNA makeup of people was set in us to do so. We just needed a situation where need came into play, then we created culture from that need. And from need we built off of something to further embrace and gave ourselves a sense of belonging.

OH SO PRIDEFUL: THE GREATNESS IN HAVING PRIDE FOR ONES CULTURE

Person in Traditional Dress at the Street

“We’re all cut from something great.”

ones own identity

We all like to think that we are the same. But the reality is, throughout human history we have built these various civilizations in the world. And with that a great culture have come from them. And there is this great pride that comes out of having an identity that stems from ones self. And today we live in a society where pride in self can be misconstrued to mean something else when you start to say cultural pride. You are quickly labeled separatist or racist, but we have to put things in its proper context. When you say ethnic and cultural pride are you talking regards to destroying another person’s to prop yours up. That is a form of racism, but are you just proud of the cultural leaps your group have accomplished.

when it’s gone

Coming from a group of people who have lost and identity, you know how important it is to have some form of recognition. When I look at groups from around the world, I often go, “Wow, I must be nice to have a cultural identifier that defines your group. Coming from America, I am African American, and we lost an identity due to slavery. No names, no real homeland, but only the names of another culture that we don’t belong to. And you will never no matter what be a member of that group. Meaning, I can never pick up a flag of Italy and fly it, yet on Columbus Day in New York Italians line the streets of New York to celebrate. And when you don’t have an identity of your own, you will never be a fully embraced by another group.

human evolution changes

As the world becomes more and more close, we are going to start to see the merging of cultures. And when I say close, I mean, countries continuing to expand until the point where groups will begin to make new cultures out of the current cultures. Meaning China continuing to expand into Africa. What does that mean as more people start to come in from the outside. Will there be an Afro-Chinese creation? Or will groups start to conflict because one feel they are losing their identity? For these reasons alone, it make you want to live forever to see the many changes of our civilizations.

CULTURAL SHIFTS: WHERE IS AMERICA GOING WITH OUR SOCIAL MOVEMENTS

Man Using Camera Between Crowd

“Is it all good or going bad?”

the ants go marching one by one

An aspect of American culture is our willingness to continue express ourselves through the freedom of the first Amendment. This rings true when there is someone in a position of power in this country that people feel uncomfortable running the country. Who would think protesting would be in the culture of a nation. But it is something that defines our society is the freedom to peacefully assemble. But my question is where are we going from here with our protest? Because every generation wants something from the ones in charge, so what will our grandchildren being saying about us at a certain time?

swinging pendulum

We see the country taking on this swinging to one side pendulum, but I don’t look at it as swinging to one side or the other. Because even people on the left are getting other people on the left in trouble. So what we are is a nation where we like to see each other get into trouble. And since every threat on the internet must be taken serious, we have to give credit to those who don’t deserve credit. But once you give the the taste of blood, they are not stopping there. You are going to be the wreck of society, which has become a more sinister cultural shift in our society. We know the behavior of this person is like us, but it gives us the ability to pounce on someone; it’s a power move in a world where you have no power.

adopting our methods

You can and will see more and more of people in other countries using America as a measuring tool for how to assemble. Places have seen throughout history how protesting can get things done. Say they take a look at our culture and force decisions in their own systems. And there are times where those types of methods get things down. And then other times it leads to a lot of people getting hurt. But guess what, our methods got so many hurt in the pass to get work accomplished.

THE GREATEST GIFT TO THE WORLD: WHAT HAS YOUR CULTURE DONE FOR THE PLANET

Earth Illustration

“I give to you, myself.”

i here by grant you access

You have this amazing culture that you come from, and want to share it with the world. Now, the word culture takes on a wide range of meanings. But when we think of culture we typically mean ethnic culture. Now, I have never really heard of that many people who say they want to share their culture with the world so openly. And if they do, it is silent and you don’t know about it. If you so choose to get involved and you are someone who respects the culture, then no one has a problem. And if you you do want to gift what you have to the world, how well will you be received by people who are on the inside that are more protective of their culture.

protect it with your life

We live in a society that if you protect your culture where you want no one else in you are going to run into a problem especially if you live in an environment where so many other different people live around you. Now, what would be the reason someone might want to protect their culture. A major reason would be there are civilizations that have existed that had a strong cultural identity, but for whatever reason; whether it was war or it just started to unravel for other reasons. And once that happens, what started as a thriving nation, now becomes ruins and urban legends. I was reading a few months back how anthropologist uncovered a mass region of Mexico where a few hundred thousand people were believed to have lived. Now we know there more like close to 10 million people. So you have to think to yourself, what happened that such a large group of people that are no longer around? And what happened to the culture that was once there?

i don’t want the cookie, just a few pieces

We are very protective in cultures because we take what we like and then we dump the rest. Sometimes we take the whole cookie if it’s delicious enough then we act as if the baker who made the cookie had no hand in it. We award the deliciousness and the entire recipe to someone of our liking. And there is a saying that goes with this, and that is, whoever is in power gets to rewrite history. And if you belong to a group who has gone through this rewriting, you tend to be more selective with who you share information with. Not only are you restrictive with information, but skeptical of people who take part that you didn’t share it with.

7 billion is hard to control

If you create anything that the world finds interesting, there will be no ability to hold it for yourself. Especially if you create something that taste good to the masses. Trying to keep your culture hidden in such a social media era is impossible. So you are better off sharing with the planet, because as a human we were meant to share experiences. Social constructs have made us scared to open up, but as the world grows, we become closer because land that was not previously utilized become utilized by neighbors. Thus we are now far too close to keep anything hidden.

CULTURE SHOCK: HOW HAVE I REACTED TO NEW ENVIRONMENTS

Grayscale Photo of Woman Holding Her Face

“This is a whole new world.”

coming into a new environment

I remember when I first cam to the city of New York from my small town in Wisconsin. It was such a new environment for me. The traffic seemed to be moving at 100 miles per in residential areas. The people walked a lot faster and even the kids moved at a different pace. Sitting down on a subway was the case of musical chairs. And if you wanted to order food at a restaurant, know what you wanted ten people back because the service person was not waiting for you to order. There is limited patience and the people are not as interested in you as a human in general. It’s all about getting there first for them; that’s right time is money. And for most people just visiting, they could not understand why anyone would want to live in this type of environment.

people to people

I am walking up the street late at night in New York City, and I see two guys on the street corner in loving embrace. And that is when I realized, wow, the idea of gay relationships are a lot more open here. You would not see this within my small town of 80,000 citizens. Not to say gays don’t live there, it is not as open as you see in New York. And not just dating, seeing people who look like me, speaking languages where you’re more of the foreigner than they are in America. Yet, it still did not make me want to leave. Being around those that are different from you all the time means you can travel anywhere and live anywhere. Living in a metropolitan hub means you have to learn to become a chameleon.

clown fish in the ocean

Understand something, whatever you are in your town or city, you may not be anything in another. Like I said, in New York City, I am a clown fish in the ocean. Hell, I might be a whale in the lake back home. My only problem with that is that are you truly at the top of your game. Because if I am a whale, I want to be a whale in the ocean. Not just someone pretending to have made it, but in reality, I am quite small in the grand scheme of things. But that just gives me more of a reason to continue to work hard. Letting me realize I should enjoy life, but never get to comfortable either.

SHARE THE WEALTH: SHOULD WE SHARE EACH OTHERS CULTURE

Photo of Woman Portrait Wall Art

“Appropriation or credit?”

we the people

As a citizen living in the United States, you always hear the term “cultural appropriation.” And I understand the ramifications connected to the appropriation of ones culture. And the reality of it all is this, should we share each others culture. Because in America, where so many different groups reside, should we be living as a whole in one nation yet still separated in the same space? Especially if you live in a major hub like I do in New York City. How do you not try to connect on some level to the different groups around you? But how do others within groups feel themselves about sharing what they have with the world? Because the idea of culture is strong, but segregation is archaic considering you’re putting a distance between the species.

for the love of it

We all might have a shared love interest for something and that strengthens the culture. Typically this form of culture is music, movies, and dance. This is something that is engraved in the identity of this country. People from around the world have an affinity for American culture because of the diverse nature of our entertainment. Everywhere in the world the entertainment is very centric to what is in the group’s culture that reside in that country. We have so many different people with so many different stories, you don’t have to worry about the same story being told over and over. And we are more than welcoming to allow people to explore the American cultural landscape. But it starts to get into some grey areas the moment you get into ethnic and religious practices. Well, I will say, more so with ethnicity than religion.

adoption is illegal

If you come a group of people who have had their history lost or stolen, then you typically are quite protective of that culture. And whoever comes in, you are critical as to why they are coming into the culture. And what happens when someone adopts something, then write it off as their own? What happens if the group is so small they don’t have a big enough voice to fight back. Then their identity is lost or becomes a trend. And cultures have taken at times thousands of years to be eradicated in a quick stint. For example, people think of the Swastika as a Nazi symbol, when in reality it is a strong Indian symbol. It was created for hate, yet adopted and now has the connotation of genocide.

IN OTHERS PRESENCE: CAN THOSE AROUND US EFFECT OUR HEALTH

Cigarette Stick on Pile of Coins

“Second hand be worse than first hand.”

the bad around us

Who are the people in your life that influence you? They may be the very people in your life as the reason to why your health may be declining. If you are in a relationship with a smoker, you are more at risk at times than they are. Because the second hand smoke is real. But you stay because they are someone you care about. But what about your health and well-being. Is that something that is important to you? Or you know what, forget about the smoking for one second. Let’s say the person or people you’re around don’t eat properly. That could have an effect on the way you consume meals as well. They are eating unhealthy, you’re not going to not indulge. You usually will feast along with them.

not being left out

We see our friends growing up doing something and don’t want to be left out of the pack. So what do we do, we typically join in on the festivities. And this is the reason why we may end up making the same decisions as them when it’s time to take care of our health. I don’t know too many people who are going to hang around people who engage in unhealthy lifestyles, while not doing it themselves. How many people associate with drug addicts and don’t try it themselves. How may people go to the restaurant and eat a salad while their friends gorge on food.

wanting to make others feel comfortable

You want to eat healthy, and live healthy, but you are afraid as to how your lifestyle will effect others. You don’t want to ┬ábe the one where everyone else heads home after work and you’re always in the gym working out. You are always trying to make people fell comfortable. When in reality, it is about your healthy and well-being. You don’t let yourself go to make others feel good about their own situation. If you are not motivation enough, maybe they are not the right group of people to be around.
