COST OF CAREER: WILL YOU SPEND MONEY TO BE SUCCESSFUL

Silver and Gold Coins

“How much did your career cost?”

saving toward the job

Are you interested in a career that requires you to spend a great deal of money in order to have this career? For me, I am pursuing photography and filmmaking which are two careers that require a great deal of time and money in your life. You will have to put money in, meaning growing your production equipment over time. But hopefully it is worth it when you start to make money off your equipment. Now, on the other hand, since you are business for yourself, you can finance your equipment. This is what happens when you are putting up money for your own career. Most people don’t do this, but when you are business for self, it requires your money or a loan.

when college is required

A career path requires you to pay for your chance at success would have to be Med School  and Law School. That is not to say that any other career is not important, but these are two careers you have no other choice but to go to college (California law exception). Most careers you don’t need a degree, but you have to pay for anything that is medical related. There is a must that you go through a time period where you have a specialized training process. This can take years even after you have graduated from undergraduate school. Now, for the amount of income that one makes from most of these job, it is seen as an upside to become a nurse or surgeon. But beware, you will be paying off the college debt for a long time, so start early making payments.

start small people

If you want to be successful in your career that requires you put a substantial amount of money in, then start with something simple. For example, I started with this Rebel t6i camera and a small lens. This means I can enter with at least something then as I start to get business, for me, I would finance my equipment. And then paying it off as I go along. There is nothing wrong with wanting something high end, but we all have to start somewhere.

THERE REALLY IS AN I IN TEAM: HOW TO CONTRIBUTE TO A COMPANY AND STAND OUT

Group of People Raising Right Hand

“How to stand put in a crowd.”

the one on the team

When you are on a team and want to get a promotion for yourself, how do you stand out so that you can advance. Because when you are building and want to grow within and organization, you need to stand out. Yet how do you do such a thing with so many other people of the same mind-frame as you? Everyone, from the moment they walk into the office space, has this one thing in mind and that is climbing that ladder to the top. How is this going to pan out for you if you feel you are the one of many to make it happen?

know everyone

As you are making the rounds and knowing everyone in sight, you are going to need some type of ally. And the reason being is because you want your name to make the rounds of people that will be getting to know who you are in the office. They will speak highly of you which will then in turn aid in you being the chosen one for the promotions as time goes on. And what’s also going to happen is people will not hold as much animosity for the role being given to you. You will then also be the guy people want to impress for their chance to rise up.

stay behind

Working late nights really makes you stand out in the crowd. You show up early and leave later then everyone else. But make sure you’re doing something that requires your time and not the impression you are doing something. You don’t want to fake the part, but be the part. It’s so easy to get caught up in the idea of being what you want instead of actually doing the work. And when you are getting work done, it makes it easier to promote you forward. Once again, you need allies as much as possible for when you get in that role you have people with the least amount of resistance.

compliment don’t hate

How to kiss ass and not appear desperate. Man wouldn’t that be a great book to be written because it’s what it is. You have to be willing to compliment the work of others as much as possible. Let your work stand on its own and talk great about others. Trust and believe there will be people who reciprocate. And worst comes to worst, the people who you compliment might walk away with the promotion. But they will be told how you aided in your complementation. So guess who’s name is in the strong race for the next step up. Now is this a guarantee, no, nothing is, but you are and will be remembered moving forward.

ROUGH START: INITIAL BUILDING OF YOUR CAREER

Selective Focus Photography of Man Sitting Near Desk

“Where do I begin?”

in the beginning

When you first embark on your journey of building your career, you are not really building your career. You are actually building your experiences that will prepare you for your career. So many people don’t understand that concept, and they give up before they really build anything. I know this first hand considering my career goals are writing, photography, and filmmaking. Three career paths that takes years and years of building to turn into a stable career. And in a social media era where everything is immediate, you can’t get that through the minds of a lot of young people.

want to be a CEO start on the grill

A reason for taking so long to run the company is because you really need to know the ins and outs of the business. You need to understand not only how it runs, but to keep the business relevant moving forward. People have this idea that they will get their undergraduate degree and then become this leader in the organization. Then in 3-5 years, they will be in a potential Vice President position. And by the time they are 35 years old, they are now the CEO of the company. But what you don’t understand is that to run a company, especially a giant, you must have the knowledge that will take you the next 20 years. And even after that you might hold a lesser position like  VP or COO until you’re nearly 50 years of age.

mentorship

You know who understands the path you’re taking, someone who has been there before. Someone who will groom you to be the next voice for the organization. This means working and working in order for you to catch the attention of someone that does want to help you become better at what you do. And in this generation with such lack of patients, you hear someone state that they haven’t made much of an impact in their careers and only been on the job a year. This is a sure way to not get noticed because you have no patience. You have to show that you can handle setbacks as well as the good things that come with being a leader to get the attention of a good mentor.

GIVING IT ALL UP: KNOWING WHAT IT TAKES TO HAVE THE JOB YOU WANT

Woman In White Blazer Holding Tablet Computer

“You want it, now sacrifice for it.”

give a little

For me growing up, I never really knew what I wanted to do. I had an idea of what I wanted from life. But it wasn’t until I stepped into society and realized that I wanted to be what I am currently pursuing. But there is another side to having what you want out of life. And that is what you must give up to get to where you truly want to be in your career. Some people have this idea that they are just going to walk into the world and start making things happen. It won’t take much work, but they’ll just come into it. Truth be told, you will lose a lot of fun time to be at the place in life. If you’re not interested in giving up fun good luck with your success journey.

feeling the pain

When not much is moving in your life, you will start to get this feeling that you are not accomplishing anything. But the reality is that your mall successes over time will contribute to the outcome. We just live in a such a right now society, that everything you do that does not happen immediately, you feel a lack of success. This instageneration where we get likes now, friends now, comments now, and shares now. But the time it takes to build that instaplatform has been a process which has taken years. We are the users who see the finished product outside the work put into the platform. So the work in the paradigm is s boring, it hurts to put the time into the work. I know this firsthand with my writing and photography. I know it will take such a long time, sometimes I wonder why I am doing it.

moving in circles

Once you get good enough to actually go out and start making moves for yourself, then you might want to connect to people interested in the same things as you. Making sure you surround yourself with like people can actually help you go farther. Because now you have someone to piggy back off of for ideas. And this is hard, especially if you’re not the most sociable of people, but you have to do so. But how else do you expect to be great in your career?

REDISTRIBUTION OF FINANCES: HOW TO PLACE YOUR MONEY IN AREAS THAT WILL GENERATE MORE INCOME

Person Using Ballpoint Pen

“Making it grow, shifting to other areas.”

making it, moving it

As I make my income, I have directed to other areas of interest that will aid in building myself a passive income. And for you, that might be the case to redistribute money yourself. Or it could be to pay off a bill that will give you more money to spend later on elsewhere. But being able to properly move your money into another area of interest could benefit you in the long run. Now, so many people when it comes to money say they don’t have the income to do this. On the other hand they spend a lot of money on clothes, a car they can’t afford, and vacations. Then you realize it’s not affordability, they don’t want to do it.

where to put it

Most people don’t know where to place their money they want to redistribute. And that is when you must sit down to think long and hard about how you will go about this in life. Because if you are not aware of what you are doing you will lose bigger than if you did nothing at all. So you have to put yourself in the know of something that sparks your interest. For example, you want to start making your own clothing business outside of your day job. Then what you must do is invest in a sewing machine first. This is an expensive purchase, but so is a $1,200 iPhone and a $500 – $1,000 tote bag. Just as much as you feel you need these items, build a “want-need” internally for your future.

how once you know

For me at least, things are starting to look crystal clear for the future. It’s because I have sat down wrote out all the possible ways to make my future happen with what I have in my pocket. And when you do that, then other less costly opportunities start to take hold. Now, for those without an interest, they will tell you that it’s not possible. Yet, if they were able to tap into their minds the way I have, you will see that it is beyond possible. So, write down a list of ways to move your money around to make it work for you. Think of the most pessimistic and idealistic things that can come of your money. And the more you live, the more practical the decisions will arise. You will be less pessimistic, and more idealistic. But your idealism won’t interrupt your practical thinking so that you don’t become too irrational and thinking far-fetched.

GET IT TOGETHER: HOW YOUR PRIORITIES CAN AFFECT YOU MONEY

Finance Illustration Paper On Table

“Do what’s needed first, then focus on your wants.”

who taught you how

Growing up, we all are raised with a set of morals and principles. And those are going to guide us through life. But what happens when your views on finances, being one of those morals, puts you in a very binding position because you were never taught basics of money? When I was young, I would watch my mother receive her check and go straight to the bank. She would take out money for the rent, then food, then make sure we had our personals. And if we had something leftover, maybe you got something nice at the store. She prioritized with the things we needed first, then the things we wanted, no questions asked.

from one class to another

If you happen to find yourself out of one class into another at a higher level, then you know you have to change. And generally, changing your socioeconomic class means changing your mind-frame anyways. If you think poor, you can’t make money. And a lot of people don’t want to hear that their mind-frame is derived from an impoverished situation. But it truly is, they just can’t see it. If all you know is this current state, then you can’t move past that point. Shifting the thought process to open your mind to new opportunities you will arrive at your destination eventually.

i want to change

Do you genuinely want to do better, or is it something you just say to make yourself feel good? We want to look at life in that manner of fixing your things in life that are needs and dumping the excess wants. But let’s be honest, who truly buys what they need first. A lot of people buy out of need, when in reality it’s a want. And their priorities are out of wack, with their lives hanging in the balance. And they don’t realize it until it’s far too late.

WHERE I’M WEAK YOU ARE STRONG: WHY DEVELOPING PARTNERSHIPS IN BUSINESS IS BETTER THAN BEING ALONE

Grayscale Photo of Person's Shake Hands

“You need me and I need you.”

building them

When you are trying to make it in business, building business partnerships can aid you in your long term growth. Me myself, I pride on being more of a creative than a business person (crazy considering I have my MBA). So this means either I will need to find a partner, or learn to be the person that is of sound business mind. Because being creative is fine and all, but when it comes to turning your creativity into a monetary gain, then eventually you are going to need to take off the creative hat and put on the business hat. And everything about business that is not creativity takes a lot out of you if you are a creative. Because creativity means creating, but business means listening to other people and foregoing some of those creative ideas. Well, how do you cope in such a space?

learn to let go

As an indie filmmaker, I have all these ideas that I would like to use to create. But at the end of the day, there is something called a budget. And you have to learn to operate within the budget that you are allotted. And that means taking some things out, making the art work in the budget, but not as to sacrifice the idea you had originally intended to promote. And that is tough in a business space, especially if art is the business that is being sold. I want to put it all in, meaning I write a script that is 200 pages, I want a 200 minute film. In reality, that script better get cut down to 105 to 110 pages. The artist that succeeds learns to give a little, the ones that starve never do. So what you should do is build relationships with people who can help you keep your vision, but grow it into a business.

two is just better than one

Yes, you want to do things alone so you can say you did it by yourself. But the work it takes to do it all alone, you really lose a lot of time that could be spent in other areas. So building with someone is very helpful. Like I said, sounds good, but in the end it’s not good. I would love to write, direct, produce, market, advertise, distribute, promote, and collect from my indie films I am looking to make. Reality is, that is just not feasible. You are going hurt more than you’re going to help. So use someone that knows what you don’t know, and they will learn a lot from you as well. And with that you can go on to have other partnerships that will generate revenues for you so you can continue to do what you do more seamlessly.
