NOT WHAT I GREW UP ON: THE WAY DRESSING STYLES HAVE SHIFTED

Woman in White Long-sleeved Dress

“I wish I understood.”

what a strange dressing style

I look at the styles from fashion and the first thing I think is I know I could have designed this outfit. Because o me I always thought fashion was this luxury and classy style with a little sexy flare. But today it just seems that everyone is going for who can look the poorest. Like people went to a trash can and found outfits typically worn by men and women sleeping in the street and thought, why not attach a large price tag to this. And yes, people are truly buying these items. These products are fetching for price tags in the thousands of dollars. But what has happened in our culture of fashion this has become the trend on the runway?

disturbed or trying too hard

People have this mind frame today where they are the disturbed and troubled artist. But when you look at it for what it is, they are far from disturbed. In fact, they are just people in their right mind trying to feel as if it makes them someone by feeling crazy. And the problem with this is that our culture has become addicted to having a troubled mental capacity. Because those who are truly disturbed try everything to keep from being this type of person. They create things that are the opposite to keep from being in that mental space. And then you have the people who are just keeping up with what everyone else is doing. These people years ago used to be called posers. But to me if you want to dangerous, be dangerous. They dressed like they have nothing, then go into their comfortable coves.

i still love the classics

Say what you want, but I love the former looks. I love when you look at something and say to yourself, “I cannot afford that, and I could not create that.” Anything that makes me go I do that is not amazing. I just don’t feel it is special when anyone feel they can get into it. You should look and say to yourself, this is too much for me. You should feel like you have to leave the planet and fly to a far away place to be that good. But not today, today is totally different.

MINE OR THE WORLD’S: WHY WE COVET CULTURE

Traditional Indonesian Wedding

“It’s mine, all mine.”

protective cultures

What would people think if me, a Black male were to wear a traditional Japanese outfit, or attire myself in traditional Indian clothing. I wonder how many would get upset by the decision for me to do so. And that is where you see who is protective of what as it pertains to culture. The reason people tend to be protective is that they do not want the meaning of what it is they do and why they do so to lose its lure and historical importance. Imagine if I were to wear clothing that is an outfit wore by Indians and it became popular. Without expressing how it came to be, it could be seen as a trend I started. Which would be considered disrespectful to Indians. what are other reasons for the protection?

good guy bad guy

There are behaviors or customs that are alright by one group. But the moment the other group adopts the exact same behavior, then for some reason it is seen as fine. And that is another reason why the culture tends to be protective. How can you say that rap music is bad when Black people do it. Then a White rapper expressing the same violent rage and sentiment and he is seen as expressing his artistic emotions. We are not talking anything else but a change in the hue of the person performing. Then it becomes the thing that is cool that the dominant group does and no longer an origin of the original group.

america is not your typical country

Living in the United States, this is a country that is considered a place where people come from all over the world to live. There is no such thing as an American custom that exist in China, or Russia, or India, or Egypt. We have many different things brought over by many different people. So when it comes to culture, this country shares cultures because of our close proximity to one another. Your neighbor is not someone that lives in the next country over. They are people next door to where you live. So it makes sense that we easily adopt one another’s customs. It is not always intentional. It’s our overall way of life because we are so close.

I DO IT FOR THE CULTURE

“What a time to be alive.”

2 months of intrigue

These are the months that I have waiting for my blog. This is where we will analyze culture for the months of September and October. And when I say the word culture, there are many different forms of culture. There is the ethnic culture, and then there are the social cultural influences that affect our lives. And the social/political have been the biggest. Especially considering in the next four months we are heading for another presidential election cycle. So our culture in America is very broad and ambiguous. But I am not just going to limit it to America, I have some things overseas in foreign countries that are of intrigue as well. So enjoy and continue to support the site.

SHARE THE WEALTH: SHOULD WE SHARE EACH OTHERS CULTURE

Photo of Woman Portrait Wall Art

“Appropriation or credit?”

we the people

As a citizen living in the United States, you always hear the term “cultural appropriation.” And I understand the ramifications connected to the appropriation of ones culture. And the reality of it all is this, should we share each others culture. Because in America, where so many different groups reside, should we be living as a whole in one nation yet still separated in the same space? Especially if you live in a major hub like I do in New York City. How do you not try to connect on some level to the different groups around you? But how do others within groups feel themselves about sharing what they have with the world? Because the idea of culture is strong, but segregation is archaic considering you’re putting a distance between the species.

for the love of it

We all might have a shared love interest for something and that strengthens the culture. Typically this form of culture is music, movies, and dance. This is something that is engraved in the identity of this country. People from around the world have an affinity for American culture because of the diverse nature of our entertainment. Everywhere in the world the entertainment is very centric to what is in the group’s culture that reside in that country. We have so many different people with so many different stories, you don’t have to worry about the same story being told over and over. And we are more than welcoming to allow people to explore the American cultural landscape. But it starts to get into some grey areas the moment you get into ethnic and religious practices. Well, I will say, more so with ethnicity than religion.

adoption is illegal

If you come a group of people who have had their history lost or stolen, then you typically are quite protective of that culture. And whoever comes in, you are critical as to why they are coming into the culture. And what happens when someone adopts something, then write it off as their own? What happens if the group is so small they don’t have a big enough voice to fight back. Then their identity is lost or becomes a trend. And cultures have taken at times thousands of years to be eradicated in a quick stint. For example, people think of the Swastika as a Nazi symbol, when in reality it is a strong Indian symbol. It was created for hate, yet adopted and now has the connotation of genocide.
