LIGHT-NING SPEED: HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE BEFORE WE BREAK THE SPEED OF LIGHT

Light Trails on Highway at Night

“We will get there, but how long will it take?”

QUANTIFYING IT

The speed of light measures how fast light travels over a certain amount of miles, kilometers, even feet per second, hour, etc. For example, the time it takes for the light to come from the surface of the Sun reaching Earth is 8.3 minutes over a distance of 150,000,000 kilometers or over 93 million miles. So to travel that extreme distance in only 8 minutes is a quantum leap for humans to reach. Well, actually, it’s beyond a quantum leap. The Earth is roughly 25,000 miles around, and light travels at about 186,000 miles per second or just over 670,000,000 miles per hour. Meaning that if you were traveling the speed of light, you could travel around the Earth 7 times in one second.

IN REACH OR NOT IN REACH

We have some pretty interesting technology, and we have worked the math to travel at some astounding speeds. But reaching the light speed record is being able to harness energy that we cannot even begin to harness yet. But is that all the way factual? Because making leaps in science is not necessarily the idea that we don’t have the technology. We have not yet had an individual, or groups of people come together to make it happen. There are 7 billion people on Earth, we cannot say for certain who is capable or not. The below video was Published on Dec 12, 2011 by Video: Melanie Gonick/MIT on speed of light.

IMPORTANCE OF REACHING LIGHT SPEED

Now, you might want to know, what is the importance of reaching the speed of light. Well, there are Earth like planets hundreds of millions of miles from us, even billions. But being able to travel at the speed of light will put us in traveling distance. Meaning, we travel to the moon in 3 days and Mars can take just under a year. But at the speed of light, we would reach the moon in about one second, and a few minutes to Mars. Just think about those 300 days it takes to get to Mars, the traveling distance we could make in space. Put it this way, light travels 16,105,941,302 miles in one day. Now multiply that by 365 days in a year. We would far exceed our solar system into other universes that we once theorized about in the past. Now granted, humans would most like not make that mission because of the effects on the human body traveling that speed. But sending a probe is no bodily effects or dangers. So for now, that would be the goal; a probe in space.

TRAVEL ADVISORY, STAY SAFE: HOW TO BEHAVE VISITING OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY

blur, cartography, close-up

“You’re not at home, act like it.”

Recently in the news, another American has been killed overseas, this time in Greece. He was a recent college graduate who was traveling with some friends. They found themselves out on the town in Greece. And the next thing they knew he was in a fight. But not just any fight, a full on brawl country, flag, greecewhere about ten to fifteen people had attacked him. He died as a result of his injuries. Prior to that, a young man died by the hands of the North Korean government after being imprisoned there for trying to steal a poster. So my question to us as Americans is, do we need special protocol when traveling outside America?

Because we have this freedom in America, but that freedom stops at the gate once we board a plane and leave this country. But for some reason that does not seem to sink into our heads. We walk around there in whatever countryarchitecture, buildings, city we’re in like we own the place. Not a care in the world, unaware of the dangers out there for us. And we don’t realize it until it’s far too late. The two instances with the college kid in Greece and the young man in North Korean, they both died. But is there something more to the way we behave as Americans that place us in these types of predicamenst? And my answer to that is yes, we do act certain ways that could put us in a dangerous situation. It all stems from the arrogance of us as people.

Now, I am not saying the Greece situation was arrogance because we don’t know that much from the video released. But the accounts of the people around says the college student was pestering the bartender. The young man took a poster in North Korea clearly when he was told not to do sodark, passport, united states of america himself. A lot of people have stated that these are not reasons to kill someone. Yes, in America it’s not a reason. But in other countries, you don’t know what the daily life is like, you’re just visiting. Or even when you’re given strict instructions, why go against them. It’s almost like you’re asking for something to happen. Which goes back to that arrogance.

There are some countries that if you mouth off to the police, you might get robbed for doing so. Or you might even have to bribe the officer into letting you go. Sounds crazy, but that is the positions you could find yourself in if not careful. Now, there is still no guarantee that you’ll be safe, but still carry yourself with a certain level of decor. Because that land of free, home of the brave exist in this country. The laws and ways of life shift once you leave America. And in the end, that’s what it’s all about. Teaching our citizens that they must be better. Not just because they are representing the United States, but because we want them to be safe.

BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS: WHY TRAVELING OPENS YOUR EYES TO CHANGE

air, air travel, airbus

“Passport. Visit. Enjoy.”

Traveling the country is something that every America need to do. But traveling the world has to be whole new experience. Me myself, I have been throughout the country. But I have never been outside the United States, though I want to travel abroad. What it does is gives you a sense of understanding about the world. Most people look at the news and base their ideology on what is filtered to them. But what these reporters don’t tell you is that some of these places are tourist destinations they have been to themselves. There is this fear of experiencing something different, or even a comfort with not knowing anything outside of yourself. Not knowing, such as what?

Well, for starters, let’s go back to the news example. If you watch the news attraction, basilica, churcheveryday, you’ll think that anything outside the United States is the most horrifying experience. Nearly all the stories are about war and death. So we sit in our living rooms and stare into the television saying to ourselves, “Thank God I’m here and there.” But in reality, a lot of these places are major tourist destinations. Aerial Photography of a City With High Rise Buildings during DaytimePlaces like Moscow, Cairo, Beirut, and Rio de Janeiro; places with a criminal or serious political issue. What we don’t know is that these major international cities are places people flock to each year. Luckily we have the Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, Instagram, and Google image searches so we can see the greatness these places have to offer at least in photography.

I know growing up for me, I am from small town Midwest. You have so many people who look at my move to New York City as this major accomplishment. Yet, it’s only a two and a half hour flight from home. I always find it odd when people are enamored by my living here. But then it sinks in; a lot of people can’t see past the small town. They don’t understand Great view of the New York City (NYC) skyline with a few high buildings and sun in the background.there is this world out there and it’s not far away. New York City is an American city, not this far-fetched place on Earth. A plane ticket away is that easy to the city. People spend money on going to the nightclub or bar every weekend, why not save it and travel. You see, the small town makes you think the world is scarier than it really is in life.

Yes, don’t get me wrong, there are some places you do not want to be caught dead or alive traveling. But it is not this autonomous awful world. There is so much even in the places that you are afraid to travel. The music, the food, the people, the architecture; all worth the visit in the U.S. borders and abroad. And in the end, that’s what it’s all about. Embracing something that is different than yourself. Now, some may say why should I have to do so. Well because we have all these ideologies about how the world should be run, but not interested in connecting to the world. Rest assured, if I am going to make a judgement call on how the world should operate, I am first going to step out into the world.

GLORY BE TO CUBA: What Now After Fidel Has Died?

Image result for fidel

“Where do they go from here?”

November 25th 2016, Cuban leader Fidel Castro passed away at the age of 90 in Santa de Cuba Province. He has been out of the spotlight for some time now, passing the reigns over to his brother Raul Castro. Why, well his health has been deteriorating over the years. But that is not what’s important at this point in time. The most important question is, “What do the people of Cuba do moving forward?” Do they continue with the Communist country or do they start cutting deals now that he has passed? I have some views regarding the next move.

My first view is, maybe they should go ahead and open up flight availability to other countries, mainly the United States. Since he was the man standing in the pathway of families visiting long lost relatives, maybe this is good. Maybe this will mean that the longstanding issues that have kept the United States and Cuba at arms length will be mended. What could come of this new relationship? How about a new form of commerce for the Cuban people? How about knocking down yet another Communist system? This was one of the last places on earth that have held on to their political ideology, with exception of North Korea, Laos, Vietnam, and China.

But on the other hand, are there some issues that could actually hurt Cubans. Cubans are a proud group of people. If America comes into the country, there could be a hit to the culture of the country. In China, you have Starbucks coffee houses not too far from ancient sites that are close to the people. Have the franchises moved, no. Why is culture at risk? Because Cubans are not America, so there is no real reason to preserve the culture. Ask Native Americans about all the treaties they signed. Yet look at what they’re dealing with out west at the moment with the building of an oil pipeline. Cubans might wind-up with the short end of the stick.

So what do they do. There are mixed emotions among Cubans: in Miami, there are celebrations, but crying in Cuban for Fidel’s life. How will this effect the relationships between Cubans. Especially if the ones in Cuba feel he was doing good things for them. President Elect, Donald Trump stated that we can open up communication, but only on his terms. That could mean a lot of different things. It could mean, allowing American companies into Cuba to capitalize. Or it could mean allowing the FBI into Cuba to retrieve Americans such as Assata Shakur who was convicted in New Jersey of killing a police officer.

In the end, we don’t know the future of the country. Who knows, Raul might stay leader in the country and continue Fidel’s policies. Or, Raul might make some deals that his brother would not make. All we know is there is a lot of uncertainty regarding the future of the country. I myself would love to go to Cuba; something I wanted to do all my life. Well, hopefully, this will be soon.

OFF THE BLOCK: Why Black People Should Travel

Image result for pan african flag

“Why we need to leave the block.”

As a Black man, I wish I could take my views of the world and place them into the minds of so many other young Black males. I am always trying to broaden my horizons as well as understanding other groups. I love Black culture, but I also love learning new cultures as well. I think there is a problem that permeates within our community that makes us not want to leave the block. I live in Harlem, New York, and the same faces I seen on a daily bases hanging on the street corner. I would like to ask these guys one day, “Have you ever been off the block?” “Have you ever even been to Times Square?” “Have you been to The MET?”

And for those of you that don’t know what the MET stands for, it is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City’s Upper East Side neighborhood. Working there as an Usher for concerts and performances, I love eying the many sculptures and art pieces that have been sent from around the world by various countries. Such as the Egyptian antiquities sent from places like Alexandria and Cairo, even the stone carved sculptures of the Medieval Period of European history, as well Mesopotamia in the Middle East and the Native American artifacts of this country.

I would just love to put other Black men in the know. To know that you are missing out on so many great things in life. You say why Black men? Well, we have this tendency to only see what is on the block. We can’t for some reason see past the block. And a lot of times, we don’t know of anything past the block. For example, my oldest sister is who introduced me to eating sushi with chopsticks. Starting with the food, and has opened my mind to what else is there to know about the Japanese culture. But see, cultural understanding didn’t start with my sister, it came from my mother.

As a child growing up in a traditional Black family, we ate soul food on a daily basis. But it was my mother who said, “Hey, it’s Chinese food Friday, Gyro Saturday, or how about Mexican food Sunday.” So I wanted to take myself to another place mentally from my childhood experiences. She also put us in schools where her children would get a more universal experience. Our cable television was used to challenge us as well: History Channel, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, and even Jeopardy quiz show of random information. we frequented the library where we were asked about anything interesting that we wanted to do or learn. So from my childhood, I was so intrigued to know more.

Another reason I want Black men to leave the block, is to get a passport. I am currently working on getting myself a passport as well. We need to travel, and I’m not talking Las Vegas or Miami. I’m talking Sydney, Australia; Tokyo,Japan; Moscow, Russia; Berlin, Germany; or Cairo, Egypt. Why international? Well because for so long, Black people have been told that you’ll experience hatred and rejection from outside the country. But the most oppression has come via United States. Why do we believe in the hype that we are so hated. Not only is this not true, but internationally, people know, understand, and respect our will to fight through our struggles here in America.

As for me, if anyone says this particular group hates you, I make it my business to open the dialect with that group. Because if they do, I’ll be able to breakdown where they got it from. For example, I was watching television where a man in Russia said he didn’t like Black people. When asked why considering you have and may never come in contact with Black people. He stated, That’s what he sees on TV and in the movies. So I went, ahhh, he just gave me enough information to make my decision. That is why it’s our job to travel and show people we are not what people have been told. Because if not, we will continue to believe thoughts and ideologies about us that were not pushed nor created by us. Putting yourself in the know is crucial in our lives moving forward.
