COMPETITION ON THE BLOCK: HOW TO OPERATE WHILE OTHERS THRIVE AROUND YOU

Three Vehicles Parked Beside Concrete Building

“Their presence might help you.”

you are not alone

What do you do when you are opening a business where other competitors will be operating? That means you have to figure out a way to exist on the block with them. But how do you do this if the other businesses are more know? But the traffic from these businesses could actually aid in your business performing well. That is if you know what you are doing. If you are able to position yourself appropriately, then you are going to do very well. If not, then you will not last long in business.

they’ve been there longer

Don’t think you’re going to just come right in and move aside the people who have been doing it longer. Yes, you will see some business initially because you’re the new spot. But what about  months in, 1 year in, how about 5 years in? So for most businesses in the area, they could care less if you jump into the groove of things. As a matter of fact, new people who come to your spot can drop in on their spot after you shut down. So, unlike in the movies, where someone breaks into your business to keep you from earning, it’s unreal. For the most part, people figure out a way to compete because they are used to new business coming in, taking business, then going out of business.

the countdown

People around you see you come in, they know. You have your tail wagging and your eye lashes batting. And little do you know there is a silent bet going around of long will you stay in business. So when it happens, there is no surprise. Someone will win the pot, and you don’t know who. It’s just what comes with opening up a business. And just like that you got swallowed up as they smile and wait for the next suspecting victim.

KNOW WHAT TO DO: HOW TO OPERATE YOUR BUSINESS ON A DAILY

Come in We're Awesome Sign

“Making moves.”

daily grind

When you are working in your business on a daily basis there are so many things that take place which make it hard for you to operate. There are these unexpected problems that will arise and how you respond to them will determine how well your business operates. People just think you build it, they show up, you make money, and that’s it. But you have to be able to harness skills to make yourself last over the long haul. And in order to do that you have to acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities and threats to your business.

adjust to change

When the society around you is changing, make sure you can adjust to the changes. One of the ways to do this when you look at how fast food restaurants have Uber car services delivering food. How did they know to get themselves involved in this space? But most of all, why aren’t more small businesses using this ability? And that is the problem with so many small businesses, they don’t shift when they should. By the time they do, it’s too late. And they are usually last to the party. Which is shocking considering that they are able to shift quicker than a big company because they are smaller and have less people who are dictating.

understand your base and bases

People need to be able to look around and say to themselves, I have this aging base, but they are still a base. How do I reach them? Is the same method of reaching consistent or has it changed? But you also have to acknowledge the fact that a new generation comes up and your base usually starts to pass away. And if you are still alive when this happens you have to understand the new base. And people get set into a way and they have a hard time shifting. So what happens is what usually happens. A small business goes out of business, even the ones who have been around for such a long time.

upgrade

It can cost you money, sometimes a lot of money, but you have to keep up with the change in times. There are small businesses, like restaurants, that have been in business for decades that still don’t have a website. They just rely on word of mouth. That is not a smart move in today’s society when so many people get referred based on an internet find. So this smells danger for a business. If you are a business that sells a product, like once again , fast food, upgrade the inside. What was considered good for the past might look less appealing into the future. Adjust to the changes around you and know when to react and how to react.

SELF SUSTAINING: HOW WORKING FOR SELF BOOST THE ECONOMY

business, computer, connection

“Self made, self paid.”

work for self

Working for self used to be seen as such an extreme risk. Now in the recent years, the idea of working for yourself has jumped. Being an entrepreneur is now all the rave. And with the fact that it could add even more jobs to the economy, that is a reason to be behind self employment. The only downside is that most businesses fail because people are not too savvy on keeping a business open. For whatever reason, they get ahead of themselves and start to fall apart.

traditional vs. modern

IN today’s society , you don’t even have to leave your house to work for yourself. You can now open a business from the comforts of your house and build right where you reside. But there is still room for the brick and mortar businesses that we have come to love over time. Now before I said a lot of businesses fail initially. But the ones that last, prove to be quite profitable for our society. Some even go on to be major companies that first started out as small family owned businesses (Walmart, McDonald’s)

why work for self

People are constantly stating how they are looking for work. Or that they are tired of working for their current employer and need something else. So they try at working for themselves and sometimes it works and other times it does not work. But what you must understand is that everyone is not meant to be a boss. Everyone can not delegate nor can everyone get up day in and day out and work for years on end. People are infatuated with the word self-employed. But then, when you are in the paradigm of working the task becomes a lot harder. Yet, if you are able to work around the hardships and make it out successful, you’ll prove to be an asset not only to you, but the country.
