X PATS: WHY PEOPLE TRULY HATE WINNERS ALL THE TIME

Image result for PATRIOTS

“They win we cheer, they keep winning we hate.”

a winning franchise

Since the early 2000’s, the New England Patriots have been a powerhouse franchise. Years removed from the franchise that no one really seemed to care about in football. They were like the Golden State Warriors before the Warriors took off. And the reality behind the constant winning is that people feel detached from you after a while. They want to see the Goliath lose eventually so they can enjoy the movie. And the Patriots are ruining the movie for people. Now, if you are a Pats fan, then you love the winning. But from the others in society, they hate the idea that the same team keeps winning. People want to see the movie play out how they like to see it play out.

i experience enough loss

Times used to be, you went to work, got off, came home, and lived your existence. Now everywhere you turn you are reminded of what you don’t have in life. No place is more evident, then in the Instagram world of watching people enjoy their great life. Even if it’s a facade, we still get upset at our own existence. And now add the team that keeps on winning, like I said earlier, it ruins your movie. That’s why Philadelphia’s Super Bowl win last year was so big. We like the movie where it all comes down to the underdog winning. Had the Patriots have won, they would be hated more now than ever before. And that could be even more real if they win this year.

never lose, really, never

When you don’t lose, suspicion arise. And what happens, there were investigations surrounding the Patriots. Because if they are winners always, it’s hard to believe. So now we have to try anything to bring down the Goliath to prove they are doing something wrong. Which is what happened, causing Tom Brady to miss several games in the beginning of last season. And that is what it comes down to, you must be cheating to always win. No one realizes the chip on the shoulder of so many on the team that never were supposed to make it, but did. And that is the reason for the fight in them. Tom Brady damn near last draft pick to Malcolm Butler barely making the NFL after previously working at Popeyes.

PAID TO PLAY: SHOULD THE NCAA PAY ATHLETES?

Football Players Wearing Jersey Outfits on Field

“Are we really compensated?”

they play, we watch

Throughout my life, I would turn on the television to see these major college sports games being played. You scan the crowd and think to yourself,”I wonder what the revenue stream must be for just one of these games.” And then you think of the entire NCAA, and you are looking at a multi-billion dollar organization in which the field hands are the only ones that don’t get paid. And so many people say that a college degree is awarded to them for free. Only problem is, you’re not really in class. The courses are based around your sports, not the other way around. You are supposed to be a student athlete, but instead you are an athletic student.

the degree game

People, such as myself who paid for college are not given many opportunities no matter how smart you are in school. Yes, there are scholarships, but still, it’s not enough the majority of people. So when someone plays sports and receives a full ride, others can’t understand. Well, it’s simple, it’s about dollars and cents. A straight A student doesn’t make money for a university. They go to school, and yes they pay for school, but to the extent to which college sports is bringing in money, no. And when you break it all down, there really is no benefit to the athlete. Unless you’re one of the chosen few going pro, and that number is very low.

zero form of compensation

Fine, you don’t think athletes can be paid from college, but no job at all, that’s crazy. And that is a strict rule, keeping college athletes from working any job at all. Which means, you cannot work a job more than 20 hours per week out of season and they cap off the money you can make from working. So, getting even a McDonald’s gig is out of the question, especially if it pays ultimately over a certain amount of money. And to me, that’s crazy to not be able to work anywhere doing anything. Not all athletes have a full scholarship, some have less than partial, but they are even restricted to a certain extent.

EXCITEMENT OF THE PAST THAT IS THE PRESENT: HOW MUCH WE STILL ENJOY SPORTS LIKE OUR ANCESTORS

architecture, auditorium, bleachers

“We enjoy no matter what era.”

sports

Humanity has taken part in sports for centuries. But this post is not aboutadministration, ancient, arch the different kinds of sports, it’s more so about the way we view sports as a cultural event. The same way that the Romans would frequent the Colosseum is the same way we part-take in football. So in part the culture of sports has not changed much in a few thousand years. Sure the venues are a little more elaborate, but the facade is just an advanced version of the past.

arena, at&t stadium, building

why no shift in celebrations

We would like to think that in all these centuries we are the these advanced people, but there is something so primal about how we play sports that we just automatically retain our aggression. In Romans times we would see the thumbs up or down for death. Today we do the same thumbs up and down.Image result for thumbs up and down

Only it is not to signify the death of someone because are a lot more humane than we were in the past. But we do the thumbs move out of love or disdain. And it’s so automatic, we never think for once it was something we did in the distant past.

knocking down barriers

Sports have always had this strange social aspect to it as it pertains to us breaking barriers. It’s all about my team, and my win as a city. So seeing someone of a different ethnic, religious, age group doing something so amazing we can’t do, it’s entertaining. I don’t like hockey, but it’s something about watching those men on skates that is so impressive; it’s respectful.

THE PATRIOT AGENDA: WHY PEOPLE REALLY ARE UPSET WITH KAEPERNICK

Image result for kaepernick

“Disrespecting the flag; there has to be more to the hate.”

It has been nearly six months since the end of the 2016 NFL season and quarterback Colin Kaepernick is still without a job. For those who are unaware of Colin Kaepernick, he is an NFL quarterback who last played for the San Francisco 49ers. Colin received adulation from many as he aided in rallying his team to the NFL Super Bowl back in 2013. Although they lost against the Baltimore Ravens 34 – 31, Kaepernick saw himself becoming a prospect among top NFL quarterbacks. But last season in 2016, Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem sighting he was protesting police brutality against minorities. He stated he could not stand and pledge to a flag, which represented freedom while innocent Black men were being killed by cops.

It immediately sent people into a rage. He was receiving everything from hate mail from fans to sportscasters attacking him. But my question is, “Are people really this patriotic?” Because as I walk the streets on a daily basis, I see plenty of opportunities to be patriotic, but people don’t. You walk through the mall and see military recruitment offices. With how patriotic people are being, you would think that recruitment offices are packed. They are not, as a matter of fact, they are having a hard time recruiting in military. Why in a nation where a president just said we need a stronger military is there limited military enrollment. Because no one want to risk their child going into battle over something they may not agree with.

So why not just be honest about how we really feel. Memorial Day was yesterday and we all had flags flying. Gave discounts on food at restaurants, and some people even shook the hands of troops. But on a daily we don’t live that way. So once again, where does the real sentiment over Colin Kaepernick come from in America? I’m sure there is a demographic of people who take issue with Kaepernick, but what is the real reason? To me, I have two positions on why people take issue with Colin. The first is a racial aspect and the other financial.

The reason I say racial is because outspoken Black males have been an issue with a lot of people throughout history. Jim Brown was criticized in the past and now Kaepernick. And it not only is in sports, it extends itself to all sorts of American life. I wonder would the same outcry of emotion come when it’s a popular White player. I have a theory and my theory is such. I feel people want to say, “You shouldn’t even be in your position.” “Be lucky you’re there because if not for sports you probably wouldn’t be doing nothing with your lives.” “I’m sick of Black people talking, shut up do what I say, and leave it at that.” Patriotism is real, but it’s not this real in America. How about another reason to be angry?

That other reason could be financial in America. We are living in society where so many people are stressed from not having their money right. Now this millionaire athlete they feel is complaining, so they are fighting back. I come from the Midwest, and plenty of people are barely surviving. So they are bringing their own financial woes into the equation. To them, they don’t know one moment to the next if they will survive or not, so they need a reason to be upset. A lot of people angry don’t watch football, or don’t even watch the team that Colin plays for in the NFL. So it’s just another aspect of America that gives people the reason to be angry.

In the end, people may have a legitimate reason for not liking what he did, but the level of disdain is not real. It’s not real because we are not this patriotic on this level in our daily society. If it were reflective in our daily lives I wouldn’t mind. But we are also very selective in our fights. We are for what people believe as long as it is for something we like in life. Good is good if it’s good for me. But at this point, I don’t see Colin on a team anytime soon. For now he is in limbo and only time will tell.

A COLOSSAL COLLIDE: DALLAS COWBOYS VS. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Image result for dallas and new england

“The Super Bowl to settle the score.”

Growing up in the state of Wisconsin, the Green Bay Packers influence reigned supreme. But for me, it was all about the Dallas Cowboys. People used to say all the time, “You from Wisconsin.” “You never even been to Texas, how are going to route for the Cowboys?” But I was a fan of Emmitt Smith since childhood. In addition to him, Michael Irvin, Deion Sanders, and Troy Aikman. It was and has always been about Jerry’s Cowboys since I was young. So when they made the postseason this past 2016 NFL season, memories started to reemerge. Yet with the memories came once again the heartbreak of losing in the first round.

And what happened, in the end the New England Patriots won another NFL Super Bowl. Now the question remains, who will return next season and who do you want to see in the big game. Me personally, I want to see the Dallas Cowboys match-up against the New England Patriots. Hopefully Tom Brady comes back for one more year of his career. Now you might ask, besides them being your favorite franchise, why Dallas? Well, New England and Dallas are tied in the record books for NFL Super Bowls with 5 each. Dallas has a higher winning percentage of Super Bowl Wins, while New England has more Super Bowl appearances (in more recent history). And both teams are the two most valuable teams in the NFL.

Tom Brady is going to be 40 years of age his birthday and Tony Romo could be coming up on the end of his career, with Dak Prescott taking over soon. They both have fairly young and good running backs, while boasting a superb receiving game. On the defensive side both teams have the talent to stop offenses and a tightly knit special teams. And let’s not forget the team owners, Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft, both whom are very accomplished men, on and off the field. So where do they go from here? It’s not as easy as what teams you want to see, but who plays the best. In all, there are 30 teams in the NFL, and everyone has a chance of winning. So not just my team, but whose to say the Patriots will repeat.

In the end, my hopes having me itching for the beginning of next season already. Even with the NBA going on as well as the MLB starting next month, I already miss football. As for now, I will continue to ponder about the mind at all the possibilities for next season.

BRADY OH BRADY: WHY PEOPLE HATE TOO MUCH SUCCESS

Image result for tom brady superbowl

“Greatness comes with a price.”

“LAW 47) Do not go past the mark you aimed for — in victory, learn when to stop!” – 48 Laws of Power, Robert Greene. Boy oh boy, this law is so true as it pertains to how people feel about Tom Brady. Since Tom Brady has become and unstoppable quarterback, there has been a constant effort to bring him down. Well why; I mean he’s not my favorite quarterback, but I don’t find pleasure in seeing him failing. So why do so many like to see him fail? Why is it that when a person wins over and over again, they are considered cheating? People love to tear these individuals down in life.

Well, let’s take a look at Tom Brady. Coming from the University of Michigan, Tom Brady was drafted in almost the last round of the NFL draft. He was not even heard of when he first started playing in the NFL. But taking over for Drew Bledsoe in the year 2000, no one expected much. Then he went on to win the Superbowl. Everyone was so happy for this Superbowl winning underdog. But then they kept winning and kept winning. Even as great players left the team they kept going strong. After this, all the allegations of cheating started to pop up. But what about Brady being the underdog? People forgot that he was drafted nearly last.

See, people love you, up to a certain point. Then they want to see you fall down. This is because it aims at how they see themselves. If all you do is win, then they can’t connect to you because they fail in life. How do you look at them as human when they are “so” different than yourself? Another reason is because no one is perfect. Winning all the time is seen as perfection. So people want to see you fall because they need to see that life is fair. Although, since when is life fair to us? Look at death, do we hold a grudge against death? We accept death for what it is. But we can’t get over the person winning all the time!

In the end, we hold the grudge because like I said before, it’s how we see ourselves. As I sit here watching the Superbowl game of the  New England Patriots vs. the Atlanta Falcons, so many people are routing against Tom Brady. They hate to see winning because their lives consist of so much losing. I know one thing is for certain, he’s not the first and definitely won’t be the last to be hated.

HOOP DREAMS: WHY SPORTS IS THE TICKET FOR BLACK MALES

Image result for hoop dreams

“A gone make it!”

“With the number one pick, of the NBA/NFL draft, the ________ select _______ of the University of ________.” These are the words young boys dream of hearing as we prepare to walk that stage, receiving that hat from the commissioner. Then soon after, celebrating with family as we bask in the glory of making to the league. Our dreams have come true and we can start our career. Now these are the experiences the very few will get a chance to see. As for the rest, it is just a dream which will never come true. But is that really the end. I mean with so many young boys dreaming and only a limited amount of space, only a chosen few will get a chance to even get drafted. Even fewer will play and fewer will have lengthy careers.

But why, why are so many Black males wrapped up in the idea that sports is the way out of poverty. There use to be a lyric in hip hop artist Notorious B.I.G. rhymes, “You either slangin rocks or got a killer jump shot.” Could it be that we aspire to play ball because so many Black men are in the league that we see. Black men are in other career fields, but these are the public figures we see. And we only want to be the men we see and seek to become who we see as making big in their careers. There are Black doctors, lawyers, engineers, executives, but we want to be the ball player. But could it all be about seeing these men. What about income?

Income has caught the attention of so many Black boys because what other career is this lucrative this young. Name any other profession where a 19 to 22 year old could become an overnight millionaire. Especially a young Black man from an inner city neighborhood. The only guys that age with a lot of money are the drug dealers. It’s one of the reasons we purchase the items we do once we get money, almost as a homage to these guys. We also think that money will fix so many of our problems that we try to escape from when we were poor. But why is sports so shoved down the throats of Black boys. Even with knowing the majority won’t go pro.

One of the reasons is that winning high school games makes the school and coach look good. So Black males have dreams pumped into their heads about being the next Jordan or Kobe or Lebron. Yet no one is telling Black boys to focus on more academics. In today’s society the idea of a college degree is thrown our way. But you don’t need basketball/football to go to college. So academics take a backseat to sports. And what happens, so many Black boys read at levels that kids half their age are reading. Which leads to so many Black males majoring in communications once we get to college. It’s one the easiest, yet one the most vague degrees in school.

In the end, we are pushed to play sports because no one expects you to do anything else. Young White males are not pumped up with sports on a daily basis. Plus, we are also inundated with constant images of successful White men in other career fields. As a matter of fact, the entire Forbes rich list are comprised with majority White males. To White guys, sports is fun, as a career objective, there are fewer. Young Black boys should be exposed to more as children to know more is out there. That’s why Barack Obama played such a pivotal role in the image of Black males. Now more than ever politics is an attractive career path for Black males. An environment which will effect Black males more than any athlete can effect change.
