GENDER ENCOURAGEMENT: WHY AREN’T GIRLS PUSHED LIKE BOYS IN SCHOOL

“We need them as much as we need us.”

girls! girls! girls!

In schools, we have always encouraged the boys more than we have encouraged the girls. When the hard work must be put in, we have always told the boys, this is what you should be doing. Then leave the less strenuous work for the girls. And that is a major aspect of why boys have become more successful than girls over time in school. And also in life the boys have gone off to do great things because you have to be pushed. You have to deal with a great deal of hardships and go through some suffering and pain.

lean in

Current Chief Operating Officer of Facebook Sheryl Sandberg wrote a book about why we should push young girls, why young girls don’t get the same encouragement as boys, and why girls become women who are not prepared for the world ahead. In an article written in 2013 for ABC news entitled, “Top 10 Facts You Don’t Know About Girls’ Education,” a list of reasons was outlined as to the effects young girls deal with on a daily.

  1. 65 million girls are not in school globally
  2. Of the 123 million young people between ages 15 – 24 that can’t read or write, 61% are female.
  3. Half of children not in school living in conflict-ridden countries are 55% girls
  4. Over 70 million children unable to have basic education in world; and over half are girls

giving motivation

How do we get them to be as great as the boys? We first have to start off by not cuddling them more than the boys. And yes, there is a certain softness that men and women have with their daughters than their sons. But we have to be careful how much because the world is not a soft place. And if we are too sensitive, then it’s going to be a culture shock when these girls step into the world.

GIVE HER A PUSH: WHY AREN’T WOMEN ENCOURAGED AS MUCH AS MEN

Image result for SANDBERG

“They need a push just as much as we do.”

us and them

In the United States, as with worldwide, men are encouraged in a different way than women. We are pushed out into the world sooner than women, and expected to take lead more than women. While women at young ages are told to stand on the sidelines and let men do the leading. The above photo is of COO of Facebook Sheryl Sandberg who wrote a book about this very topic. How women are not as encouraged as men, and why it’s harder for women to get raises on jobs like men. But is there just a social aspect to leading or is there a more biological reason why?

social reasons

When little girls are growing up, they are not encouraged to do as boys do. And I am not referring to going to school. I mean putting yourself in positions that get you hurt emotionally and at times physically. Then need to love ones self is not as strongly pushed so girls compare themselves to other girls in school and in the public eye. But we also never give girls the suck it up speech. When boys are young we’re told, “Shut up and suck it up,” “Deal with it.” You know as a guy early on that failure is apart of life because it’s been pumped into your head at such a young age. So when failure happens we charge it to the game. But girls, we cuddle them too much; treating them like they’re too delicate to handle hurt early on. Then women are tossed into the thralls of the world where people could care less and you get hurt. Now, taking lumps becomes new and a lot more difficult.

nature

On the other hand, we not only have the social reasons as to why women are not pushed like men, but the natural reasons. Nature plays a role because when a women is more likely to want to share a position than hold the top spot. Not just in work places, but also in monogamous relationships. Men not only want the top spot, but we are completely content with the idea that there are people underneath us. Especially in cases of dating where we want to be the one in control. Yet it’s harder for women to respect and love a man where she takes the lead all the time. But for guys, we like the lead.

progression in time

Women have taken on roles more and more over the years. But still, we don’t encourage girls as much as boys. So boys are more than ready to step into the world because we deal with the lumps at an early age. We don’t force girls to take their lumps at an early age. Girls are not forced to take loses, and suck it up and deal. But boys are taught that dealing is apart of manhood, so learn it now to prepare yourself for adulthood.

PARENTAL MENTAL: HOW YOUR CHILD’S MIND IS SHAPED BY YOU AS THE PARENT/S

adult, adventure, baby

“You give them confidence or take it away.”

IT’S YOUR JOB

So many young people are entering the world afraid of their chances at success. But whose job is it to prepare them for the world? I’ll tell you whose job it is, it’s the parents. Your job as a parent/s is to make sure your child/children have the ability to say to themselves, “Life is tough, but I can do this, I can make it.” Yet there are so many who can’t cope because mom and dad didn’t properly show them the way. Now the kid is an adult thinking it’s society’s job to raise them.

HOW DO YOU GIVE IT

Parents are to give their children the confidence that they have had in order to make it in the world. But that’s assuming the mind of the parent/s are in the right place. How can a parent shape the mind of the child if theirs is so ruined. So that means now you have ruined parents raising children that will enter our society, who then in turn affect all of our lives. And you give them the confidence by making them realize that failures will come, but ultimately there is light at the end of the tunnel. And that they also are great in every shape and form, yet they must prove this by exemplifying it in the world.

HOW “WE” SUFFER

Notice I said how we suffer with the we in quotations. And the we is referring to the masses of people in the dominant society. When parents don’t give their children the proper guidance and encouragement, everyone else suffers who has to come across them. And that doesn’t just mean parents who were absentee, I’m also referring to parents who raise their kids making them think every kid should be handed something for nothing. Teaching them that their 50% is someone else’s 100%. Then they step into the world and realize that their 50 is 50, and my 100 is 100. And that my 100 will always beat your child’s 50.

IN MY OWN LIFE

Growing up for my sisters and I at least, you just knew their was nothing that was going to be given to you. You had to put forth effort in everything you did in life. And you were also in the know that you were going to stink at a lot more than you were going to be good at, so find what you’re good at and work to achieve greatness. Because inevitably the world could care less about your tears when you have nothing to show. It will be you who people judge, not how you grew up or any downfall you may have encountered in life.

STOLEN AMBITION: WHAT IF THE WOMEN OF THE PAST COULD HAVE HAD THE OPTIONS OF TODAY

Related image

“What little they had made way for a lot today.”

My mother was born in the year 1960, making her the last of the baby boom generation. This was the first generation where men were coming home from the war and suburbs were being built up all across the country. Mass marketing and advertising was introduced and the influence of entertainment was taking hold. Why was so much going on during this time period? Well, it was because this was an era of mass population growth in the United States. Jobs were in abundance and the men who came home from World War 2 were settling in and with their wives building large families. But there was something else that was prevalent during this time period. And that is the fight which was taken to the streets by women all across the country along with the civil rights movements. Women were expected to act a certain way at times outside the realm of their choice.

It makes you think that what if these women were born in today’s society. How much would they have been able to accomplish had they had that push that women have today? My mother recently showed me a photo of her when she was a teenager running track and field. A sport that I took part in myself at a young age. Only difference between me and her is that, not only am I a man, but the encouragement I received was different than her generations. Girls were told to “shut up” and “keep quiet” when expressing their goals and ambitions. Ambition was for the boys, and staying at home was for the girls. It makes you think; how many of those house wives back decades ago often dreamed when being at home all day. What were their dreams when they would be cleaning floors or preparing meals for the family.

These were thoughts I never got a chance to ask my grandmother or great grandmother that I could ask my mother. I would have loved to ask my great grandmother, before you married my great grandfather what did you dream about in life. Because women today don’t have all these goals and women in the past didn’t have them. It’s just that women were not expected to do anything in life. I was an adult when my grandmother died, I wish I could have asked her what were her goals as well. Just so I could get some clarity into what life was like living with all of this bundled up inside. Asking them what it was like to not be able to do what you wanted to do.

See, in the end, so many young women say there is still a lot of work to accomplish for the women of today. But in the past, they had it much worse, even with the good times. I guess that’s why I push so heavy at my goals because my mother never got her chance to shine like she wanted at a young age. So many women at that time had so much potential to be great, but greatness was not an option. And for the ones who stood out front despite the lack of encouragement, it gave way to so many today.

NO POINT TO PROVE: HOW HAVING SOMETHING TO LOSE IS BASED ON SOMETHING TO LOSE

Image result for WINS LOSSES

“Don’t feel you have to prove yourself to nobody’s.”

Having something to lose is really important in our society. Not just in our society today, in the past and in the future. So why do so many people operate with this mindset of I have noting to lose? They operate this way because they don’t see themselves going anywhere in life. And when they don’t see nothing for themselves, they could care less about you. I was just watching an interview that Jay Z conducted where he was talking about coming into the music industry for the first time. He thought then superstar Notorious B.I.G. was scared not to walk into a nightclub. But it wasn’t fear, Biggie had something to lose at that time.

And that is hard for people at the bottom or just getting into a position of power don’t realize. Having something to lose, meaning not just money, but a bigger picture. B.I.G. had a bigger vision than Jay Z was able to see at the time. Now that Jay is where he is now he understands the bigger picture. And income along with socioeconomic have a lot do with having something to lose. Like I recently said, not just money alone, but money is a motivator. Yes, there are things that are bigger than money, yet monetary decisions are closely related to having something to lose. But who with money is effected by this losing or winning in society. In my opinion, athletes and entertainers are two groups of people that largely fall into this category. And a lot of times it’s public figures from poor backgrounds.

For example, the NFL draft just took place this past weekend and there were a lot of athletes from underprivileged backgrounds. They don’t understand how their lives are about to change soon as they sign that contract. And I am not saying just going places without being noticed. I mean the people you associate with in life. Everything you do is under a microscope. So if people are around you, they have to shift how they behave to be in your environment now. And the question is are they willing to do so? Are they willing to change themselves to help you persevere? Because with them around, now you become a babysitter. Whatever they do, you take the punishment for. For instance, NFL player Adam “Pacman” Jones friend shoots someone at a nightclub. Adam is nowhere around, but the fact the guy is with you is enough for you to get punished.

If you told some of these guys that they now are responsible for whatever the people around them do, they would have second thoughts about being athletes. And the reason for this change is because you are not just some guy running a football. You’re not some musician making beats and singing, or acting in a movie. You become a brand, a figure for young people to look up to, and an investment for people who sign you to a contract. Some people say, I’m still me, but you’re not you anymore. You have this light on you, where you can’t be you. You are expected to be more than just you. Your morals and ethics go out the door, and it is more about the organization you represent; their morals.

In the end, your life will shift with every level of increase in life. You have no other choice, because with the good comes the downside. There is no all good in life. And change is can be hard, but not all change is bad. Sometimes growth is needed and must take place to make you a better you.
