TO STAND OR NOT TO STAND: THE NFL DILEMMA OR PLAYERS PROTESTING

Over the past couple of years there has been the controversy over the former Quarterback Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem to protest against police brutality. And since then there has been protest similar throughout sports across the country and even outside the United States. So, my question is, is the protest relevant in the NFL anymore? Because since the beginning of the season, a few protest have taken place. But not much has been spoken about the matter. Maybe the protest has ran its course and they are over. Because when it happened initially, you would think it was never going to end. It was a situation that put the NFL in a very precarious position.

In America we have the right to do a lot, but that does not mean we will all like when something is done. And that is where the idea of being able to and not wanting someone to do so clashes. Colin has the right to do so, and did so in alignment with the first amendment. But with the freedom comes the emotions of people who feel otherwise. And that is a tough position to be in because  Flag of the USAyou can’t keep someone from expressing their freedom so long as they don’t break any laws. But you cannot also expect people to like what you are doing. Yet Colin is out of a job, so what is that about? Which brings me to the next position.

Having the right to do something and an employer pushing back can put the employer in a bind. But when you have proven to force the employer to lose revenue, then it’s a different story. So once the people refused to watch causing the NFL to lose money, that’s when the right to do so stops. On the other hand, the problems that the NFL ran into was a counter-protest where they will still lose money. So it becomes a choice of lose a little or lose a lot. And they stood a chance to lose more by keeping Colin. Now the argument is, he was fighting for something he felt was a just cause, followed the law, and didn’t insight violence. True, but the people have a choice not to include themselves.

WORKPLACE MANNERS: HOW TO ACT TOWARD WOMEN WHILE AT WORK

Over the past couple of months, more and more women have come out against men in the public eye with sexual harassment claims. Once the top man in the entertainment industry was brought down, Harvey Weinstein, there has been a constant barrage of women sharing their stories. You would think some of the men would say they were innocent, but all have been admitting to the behavior. So with that said, what types of standards must be further implemented in the workplace to insure that women are safe. And the reason that I say women is because the odds of men coming out in this fashion against the women are rare. As a matter of fact, men coming forward with stories is so rare because the workplace etiquette from women have traditionally been respectable. So what is it with this behavior that have lead so many of these men down this path?

Image result for matt lauerBecause just yesterday, television news correspondent Matt Lauer was fired from NBC for his sexual misconduct at work. And the problem is that a lot of these men come from a time period where so much of this bad behavior was commonplace. As a matter of fact, it was so commonplace, that women never even thought twice about the advances at work. But today, with so much changing in this digital era where information travels faster, you can’t be what  you used to be at the workplace with behavior towards women. That is not to assume that the women in the past were totally fine with the advances because a lot of them weren’t. They just had a hard enough time trying to secure employment, so they didn’t want to say anything that would have rocked the boat. See, I have a different means of approaching the situation when working with women at work.

Any job that I have had, usually involves me having very small talk with the women around me. Keeping everything very basic and very simple; with a hello, how are you, and then conducting my business as usual. It may come off as distant and antisocial, but when you see what has been transpiring in the news to public figures, I know I would be fired. But that type of atmosphere in itself is rather uncomfortable, yet you have to watch yourself. Because I know women who don’t mind being complemented at work when they look nice, but others meet the comments with disdain. And you are basically rolling the dice when you speak.So what is the proper workplace etiquette?

In the end, most women will tell you that they don’t come to work to be complemented. But there are women that feel a lot more comfortable around some men and not others. So the answer is Image result for women workplace flirtynot always being complemented, but whose giving the complement. And that in itself is a slippery slope. But the reality is that if the woman is uncomfortable, I don’t care if one guy makes her feel one way and one guy makes her feel the other way. The one guy that is making her uncomfortable must stop, not the one she’s fine with conversing. Sounds irritating if you’re a guy, but some men creep women out more than others.

IT WORKS, IT REALLY DOES WORK: WHY OUR SUPREME LAW ACTUALLY WORKS

In a nation where so much is surrounding politics and social activism, we need to make sense of everything by going back to our roots. And those roots of a nation lie in our Constitution of the United States as well as our Declaration of Independence. Now, don’t get me wrong, these documents were written during a time period where people had no rights, so to write documents surrounding human rights while human rights violations exist under your watchful eye is very hypocritical. But the Constitution’s opening to the document states that, “In order to form a more perfect union.” A more perfect union is a very important opening because humans are not perfect creatures. We are flawed: we have vices, we have our like and dislikes, we have our fears. So making a “more perfect union” does make sense. Because it implies a union that is more productive than the previous decisions made.

Decisions that as the Constitution states, promotes tranquility, general welfare, common defense, and the blessings of liberty with a lead into our amendment our rights. But you cannot have the Constitution, without our Declaration of Independence. A declaration which states, “When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.” (U.S. Constitution, 1789) So even in all the flaws of our leaders, the brick laying for our civilization is aimed at making sure that America works by way of preserving these documents.

But what happens now when those documents are put to the test as we see in today’s society where our Amendment Rights are challenged by one another and we feel as if freedom is being lost. We live in a society today where people don’t like what you say and want what you say to be restricted. Yet the answer to unpopular speech is not to suppress that speech, but to have more dialogue surrounding what it is that is creating the bind within you. You don’t like what I protest, fine, express your grievance, but forcing those from protesting because you don’t like the action goes against the very document we promised to uphold. So what happens when we live in a society where we start to role back on these rights? What happens beside losing your national identity, you lose time. Time spent building a nation that is now being in jeopardy of failing at the very hands of the people it promised to protect.

And yes, we all have reasons why we don’t like social situations, or political figures and their decision making. But as much as I am not a fan of certain people in America, one of which is our current President elect Donald J. Trump, impeachment might be problematic and threatening to our nation’s future. Because the Declaration states, that it is up to the people to change course from what we have in power at the moment for the future security of this nation; meaning to vote. In the past we uprose, but uprising in modern times is to vote the person out. So in 2020, if you are unhappy with the political binds to which we are under now, you express that vote at the polls. We do not, unless we prove criminal wrongdoing has taken place, remove a leader from power by way only sentiment alone. Because a civilization cannot be maintained by way of sentiment, but a basic rational non-emotional structure to which we all live.

Because in the end, as we go back to the beginning of the passage, we have to understand that the Constitution is only a way to make the union more perfect, not perfect. Meaning as an African American man, there was one point in time where I was 75% human and 25% property as a slave. Today we (Black people) work in every facet of industry in society. There are still issues we face, and based on population will always have people who we as Black people will have to deal with racially. But the ratifying of the Constitution which gives way for me to express myself freely and a Declaration for me to have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is in essence a “more perfect union”. For it is better than the previous, never will be perfect, but any goal of any civilization is the following: status quo, equilibrium, standard, and not ever and will ever be perfection.

red, white, and BLUES: HOW WE ARE SLOWLY STRIPPING EACH OTHER OF FREEDOM

It has become redundant at this point, but another issue has spiraled out of control regarding President Donald Trump. This time it took place between him and players of the National Football League. This past weekend, he made comments in Huntsville, Alabama before a crowdd of his supporters regarding their protesting on the football field during the National Anthem. And the response was, as you guessed it, swift and wide spread. Because the very next day you saw over 200 players and team owners locking arms and dropping to one knee in solidarity with each other. So the response from those on the opposite side of the the protest say, “Well, we’ll show you by not patronizing football.” And the only issue with that form of protest is the flip side which is to come after you once again. Now as I sit here typing, I can’t help but to be shocked by rights we are taking away from each other. And might ask how are we doing so.

Well, I remember not even a year ago when political commentary Anne Coulter wanted to speak at Berkeley University in California. The uproar over her coming to the campus led to vandalism and rioting. The upheaval caused the event to be discontinued. Then as Colin Kaepernick took his knee to protest police brutality in America, he was ostracized in the same manner as Anne for his freedom of Image result for ann coulter berkeleyprotest. And to me the losers in all this are the American people. Not for going against the two individuals, but the fact that we are willing to attack each other’s rights because we disagree. You may not like what someone says or does, but I was under the impression that as long as no one is being physically harmed what’s the problem. Because we attack everything that is offensive to us, then everyone will be out of jobs. Since what offends us is so broad and ambiguous in our society. What is offensive to you might not be offensive to me and vice versa.

And where does it lead to next. If the people push back against the NFL, and NFL forces players to stop, then what. Now it leaves people on the conservative side open. Because it won’t stop there, it will be this constant ping pong game. And like I said prior, the only people getting hurt are the countless people that represent organizations Image result for freedomsthat don’t make big money who could lose their jobs because of the constant fighting. But that is something that does not seem to sink into the minds of so many people. We hurt those, who for the most part just want to work and make it home to their families. I’m not saying that we should stop giving our opinions, I’m simply saying, everything is not meant to be fighting. What ever happened to the right to be offended. If you don’t like something, disconnect.

And in the end, that is the main problem. People hate to have something they feel passionately about go on deaf ears. But is it real passion, or just a reason to be mad. You never know because no one is honest with how they truly feel. But why are people losing everything they work for because I disagree. I pride myself on being more liberal than conservative. But I am not compelled to boycott someone just because I don’t like what they speak about or protest. We have become our own enemies. With a $700 billion defense budget to protect us against so much, it is internal where the main problems lie today.

WHEN PERSONAL INTEREST COLLIDE WITH CORPORATE INTEREST

The above photo is of sports journalist Jemele Hill of ESPN. She recently came under fire for her comments aimed toward President Donald J. Trump. She stated via her Twitter account that she felt President Trump was not only a voice for White Supremacy, but a member of their organizations. It sparked criticism enough to catch the attention of the United States Press Secretary SarahImage result for espn jemele Huckabee Sanders who stated that Jemele’s comments were “fireable.” Even the president himself felt that she should be relieved of her duties for making such comments about him. And it must have struck a nerve with someone because ESPN issued a statement regarding Hill’s comments directed at the president. So they must have really taken issue to the comments that Jemele made to put out a statement. Or was there another reason they decided to issue a statement regarding her (Hill’s) comments.

ESPN is a multinational cable television provider of worldwide sports. And as a company owned by Walt Disney, they are aimed at trying to maintain a certain level of decor on their television programming. Now, Hill has her freedom of speech, but ESPN has the ability to take a stance as well. Meaning that if they truly wanted to, they could fire her. Not on grounds of what she saidImage result for espn because that violates her freedom of speech. But if they feel what she said could cost them in monetary damages then they are in their full right to let her go. Now, those in Jemele’s corner might say she spoke the truth, but here is what you don’t realize. You represent the brand that is ESPN; and while under that brand you have to abide by their rules and regulations. Meaning, if politics are to not allowed then you don’t discuss politics. But if they are allowed , the speech has to be in alliance with company regulatory measures.

It sounds unfair, and it is, but that is what happens when you work for a company. You see, prior, Jemele and her colleague Michael Smith ran a podcast show that became popular. And that popularity opened doors for them in much more lucrative and diverse business environments.But with that bump in exposure comes the rules when playing the game at that level. And what Image result for walt disney company you can say and do on a podcast is not the same as when you are representing a brand like Walt Disney. Yet many still feel she should be able to express herself because it is her rights. And once again, here is where you are put into this weird trick basket which is why people don’t voice their opinions. You can freely say anything you want; but it’s an organization’s right to fire you if you don’t align within their company policies and/or cost them in monetary damages.

And a lot of the sentiment in the sports world is still stemming from the fact that former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was shut out of football for choosing to not stand for the national anthem. A move against him that has even sparked protest outside of the NFL’s headquarters in New York City. So with so much going on, it’s no wonder they are trying to distance themselves from her statements. But in the end, Hill is still an employee of ESPN. So for now it’s a waiting game to see the final decision. And as much as I agree with freedom of speech, you have to be willing to also take the lose from a company not willing to continue to do business with you.

LOSING EVERYTHING FOR NOTHING: WHY ARE PEOPLE SACRIFICING THEIR ALL FOR AMERICA’S CURRENT CLIMATE

Protesting, fighting, arguing! All of this in fighting over the election of President Donald J. Trump. People are at odds with each other, and even families & friends have become fragmented as a result. And for what, over a man who is a billionaire that won’t be effected by any of this when he leaves the White House. Long after Trump have left the White House people are going as far as sacrificing their freedom over this election. And what’s sad is that it still won’t change anything. America will continue on as usual, status quo in place, and the move forward will commence. Meaning, from the guy who drove his car into the crowd of people in Charlottesville, Virginia to the counter protesters backlash.

Those involved might look back and go, what the hell was all this about. The guy who drove his car into a crowd will go to prison, and his life is over. A new administration will come and go, and your life is done. The guys carrying the torches at the University of Virginia campus who lost their jobs, how will you pay your bills. To the counter protesters fighting back and getting arrested, I hope you all know what you’re doing. I’m not saying not to push back against things you feel are infringing on your rights, but is it a righteous fight. During the Civil Rights movement, you had no choice but to be involved because there were major human rights violations. But today, issues exist, but we are fighting for the most part because we disagree with people’s stance, not an infringing of rights.

And like I said before, this administration will blow over, while all these people and their relationships are ruined. People feel so strongly about their political views because they want to feel like their voices mean something. And in reality, the American government’s job is to find ways to move forward. Moving forward meaning, aimed at trying to be one of the leaders in this new technological era. Yet people are more focused on their historical sentiments from the 1700’s, 1800’s, and 1900’s. Crazy thing is that the top one percent could care less about Trump and his followers ideology, as well Trump adversaries. Because while people focus on things that will blow over, the other portion of people focused on this new game will advance. And what will happen inevitably from those not focused?

In the end, fighting will calm and questions will be asked as to how others manage to gain their positions. It’s like the old saying, “When there’s blood in the street buy property.” And that is the truth because people in the know are looking for capital gains. They are financially empowering themselves while others fight. So when the blood is done being spilled, the fighters will be worst off than before, and the wealthy will be at an even higher level than before.

TAKING RIGHTS: HOW WE INFRINGE ON EACH OTHER’S RIGHTS WHILE FIGHTING FOR RIGHTS

The Bill of Rights are the first ten Amendments to the Constitution of the United States. And slowly but surely we are in a race to lose those rights. But not by way of the United States government. But by way of each other as citizens. We, for some reason in the U.S. today, love to catch each other saying or doing something that we disapprove so the person can get into trouble. Now you might ask, how can your rights get you into trouble? Well, all we need is for you to do something that people don’t approve of first. It doesn’t matter if you broke the law or not, just as long as you got caught.

And this nation of children that tell on each other has taken hold. But more than than that, we have become police in each other’s lives. You say something that is you expressing your freedom of speech, and I’ll expose it. Then you turn around and catch me protesting something you strongly disagree with and then I lose my job for what I believe. That is a dangerous precedent we’re setting is going after people not because they broke the law, but because they say things we disagree with. And the populace just remains quiet, not saying anything or getting involved until it’s too late. Now what do I mean by the title I use, infringing on each other’s rights.

This is what I mean. The NFL have been a topic of discussion since quarterback Colin Kaepernick decided to sit out the national anthem. People have gotten made and decided to threaten boycotting if he was accepted back into sports. But now the Neo-Nazi/White Nationalists groups have been standing up for the right to have Confederate statues in the Southern states. Though I’m not a fan of the men and women who are Neo-Nazis, you have no other choice but to allow them access to march. Unless laws are broken you are now infringing upon the rights of others. Now, we may not agree, hell I don’t, but in order to keep everyone in alignment with rights in the this country, you have no choice but to allow access.

Because unpopular and/or hate speech is protected by our United States Constitution. Is this a sick misuse of the rights that we have in this country, yes. But as long as people go through the proper channels, there is nothing that can be done, and maybe should not be done. Because if we don’t, how long before another group says this I disagree with, or this is hate.  And it’s obvious that a Neo-Nazis hate, but in a country where freedoms are open so long as you don’t incite violence. Once that happens you are now susceptible to being stop. In the end, the problem is not just why people protest. It’s the fact that rights are such a grey area in America. Because using logic, sentiment aside, you have to allow for protest, speech, and open press. Even as unpopular as you might see it, you have to protect even hate speech to protect speech as an entirety.
