CONSCIOUSNESS: WHY WE HAVE SUCH A HARD TIME COPING WITH ONE

Image result for mind

“Cognition is our greatest gift and curse.”

Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to figure out why we think and behave the way we think and behave. Where does this consciousness come from and why was it given to us. But our greatest strength that has built civilizations and continue to build is our greatest curse as well. Because in addition to the greatness, we have a history of famine, war, and poverty. We have used our strengths to control the minds of others, leading them down a path of wrongdoing. And this great gift that we have come to know and build so much, takes a toll on us when we are at the end of our lives. Or better yet, knowing that one day we will no longer be here on Earth. The idea of existing is beautiful, but the thought of all this consciousness dying and vanishing creeps us out.

My career goals are writing (screenwriting, playwright, novelist, and blogger), filmmaking, and photography. And when I sit down to generate ideas, with all the challenges of working on my next projects, also comes the great ideas. So where does all this come from that streams through my mind when it comes to telling a story. Is it a gift? Is it something that we are born with individually? Or do we find out a skill we have and build off of that to become great? In my opinion, humans don’t have a gift to inherently perform something that no one else can perform. We are all good at certain actions, but some of us will fight to build off of that, and others will ignore it. This is why we have few great people who go off and prosper at what they do. Like, for example, the movie, Good Will Hunting. Matt Damon’s character was a mathematical genius, but no one pushed him until he found Robin Williams.

In real life, there is no Robin Williams that comes in the form that Robin introduced himself to Damon. You have to put out into the world, and then hopefully someone will see you for your talents and you’ll move into a space where you can publicly express your full potential. Yet if no one is able to see you for what it is that you do, then is everything lost? No, it just means you have to go into the world and show people yourself. And having the cognitive ability to do so is what makes us think to ourselves, how do we get in that frame of mind. What is it in the brain where dots are connected and things start to make sense where we put ourselves in the know.

And in the end, that is the great wonder of the mind. That ability to continue to ask questions and gain insight into ourselves and the world around us. But the more we find out about ourselves, old traditions that have bound us for so long are dying. Religion being on of them. In the past we thought that this light in the sky that is the sun goes everywhere we go. Then it moved on to the Earth is the Earth, and we are pulled by gravitational force to wherever the sun goes. Then we have moved on to the sun not only pulling the Earth, but other planets as well. Now, we would like to know, where is the sun taking us as we orbit around it, shooting through the universe. The more time goes by, the more our minds become expansive, and we learn not just about ourselves, or our planet, but other awe and wonders of the universe that makes up us as well as other connecting universes. Yet with with all that knowledge, our all-knowing minds make us slaves to our own vulnerabilities in the process.

MY SINGLE LIFE: UNDERSTANDING SELF IS KEY TO LIFE’S FULFILLMENT

Man Wearing Grey Shirt Standing on Elevated Surface

“Certain things never change.”

I have posted previous topics regarding being single and self-awareness. Only this topic aims at why I am the type of person who prefers to be single over being in a relationship. And it has a lot to do with aging and coming to an understanding that you feel a certain way and it may never change. Now don’t get me wrong, we as humans go through many transformations throughout our lives, but there are personality traits which will never change about you. And for me, being the aloof person who don’t quite want you around is a personality trait of mine that I feel is for the rest of my life. It’s something that I love most about myself, but there are the downsides of being as aloof as I am. The downside is that you can more than likely guarantee you’ll never find a successful relationship. And for most, they are able to stomach that reality.

And what do I mean by being as aloof as myself. Well, there is this amazing aspect that I found about life in coming home and not having to compromise with anybody for anything. Going to the refrigerator not having at ask what to eat or being on a schedule. That feeling when you walk in the house at 7:00 p.m. or 12:00 a.m., and it not being a discussion is paramount. I shouldn’t have to explain where I’ve been, I just want to sleep. And that’s when it sinks in, “Buddy, you need to be single.” You think to yourself, “Really.” Well, yes, you should remain single if you are the type of person that I am in life. The problem is, is that most people don’t stay single. They want someone to accept their personality, but that’s just not realistic. Because a relationship is about compromise, not doing things you genuinely want to do. That’s when I get that not interested feeling in my stomach.

At first, it is something that is depressing, but you know your mind better than anyone. You know deep down inside why, but it hurts. But for me, at age 30 years old, I say to myself, “Oh, ok, this is what this is.” The “oh” is coming to realization that you mean I have to do what to date or be in a relationship. That is why I never have been in one. I have to speak to your friends, or get to know your family members. What the hell for, can’t I just be with you, and not have to be in their presence. Then you pause and say, “Yeah, maybe being me is a risk.” Because in the end, you have to have a non-negotiable list. The things you will deal with and not deal with in life. And my list is I should not have to speak to friends or family I don’t want to talk to or may not like; I should not have to do relationship people things like be around other couples; and I should not have to consult with you before doing anything. And those top three will keep you single. But I love the me that I am. And coming through adulthood I have become happier and more aware; and that’s what’s important.

MAKING YOUR OWN LUCK: HOW YOU CAN TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE

cards, chance, deck

“You might have been dealt a bad hand; use in to your advantage.”

Some great advice for life, is that no matter what your economic, social, academic, ethnic, gender background, you can overcome a bad situation, At times we feel like all hope is lost for the future. But little do we know that we may be in a better position than we realize. Like me for example, I grew up below the poverty level in the United States. But does that mean I have to always be in that position in my life. You can tailor make life to move yourself out of your current situation. Problem is that most people have a hard time moving themselves out of their bad positions.

See, in earlier posts I talked about putting yourself in the know. And most people say, “What is the know?” “The know of what?” I say, “Whatever it is you’re attaining to have in this world.” So many people want something out of life, such as a paycheck. Yet they don’t quite understand what it is they have to do to get there. They’ll say,” I need a good paying job that makes good money.” That sentence has no clear meaning to it. You have to know what career interest, what title, what pay range, and what time it could potentially take to get there. And this requires having a certain level of self-awareness. Lacking an understanding of self will make it hard to navigate the know. Because you don’t know what you’re good at, if anything at all.

So what do you have to do, you have to test out different things in life. For me, I tried multiple things before I realized I wanted to be a writer. I said to myself, “Faheem, you’re going to be a doctor.” Then I realized I don’t have the patience to deal with patients. So next I said, “You’re going to be an attorney.” And envisioned myself in a court room standing before the judge and jury. Then I realized I could never get a guilty person off or send an innocent person to jail. My big break came when I said that I would go into the business field, which is broad. And it wasn’t until I went for my MBA I realized I wanted to be a writer. Initially it was not knowing what I was doing, if ever I would be successful, but I knew I loved it.

The more I wrote, the more I became comfortable with talking about myself. And I don’t mean being into myself. I mean debriefing information, and being more transparent than before in life. So what did I do, I realized I had something, and could make it into a career. So since the year 2013, I have been writing screenplays, blogging, and my books. So what does all this have to do with making my own luck? I am putting myself in the know by researching, and continuing to learn to write. Making those moves to understand the career for you and knowing what you’re good at it. And also knowing when to make appropriate adjustments to the things you write. Because you’re not going to know everything, especially in the initial stage, yet you have to develop a feel for when things are going right or wrong.

See, in the end, you can make your own luck. You just have to be willing to put yourself in a certain mind frame. And with that mind frame, you start to understand and develop a sense of self. Once you know yourself, you can pursue your career endeavor. This way, you’re being not vague about what it is you want. Sadly enough, a lot of people will never find what they’re good at in life.

UNLOCKING TALENTS: EVERYONE HAS THEM YET FEW UTILIZE THEM

Image result for talents

“Why most of us will miss the opportunity.”

When we are all born, it’s hard to gauge what we’re going to be as adults. But nonetheless, I think we all have something that we are born with that makes us not only us, but could make us successful. Unlocking this means having some level of self-awareness. When you become self-aware, then you’re able to unlock this inner talent. In addition to unlocking this inner talent, one must also work at this talent to define greatness. So why don’t we have more people who are able to become successful in life? Better yet, why are so many people unable to tap into this inner talent that we possess? And to me, a lot of it has to with fears.

That’s right fears! I know we always hear the same thing over and over again. You work hard, but what does that really mean? You can work 10 hours a day, 7 days per week, for years and not attain what you work toward. To me, what is for you is for you. You shouldn’t pursue the dream, but the reality instead. Meaning just because we want to do something does not mean it is for us. It may not be that inner talent you possess. And most people are wired to conform out of fear; fear of failure is major and fear of letting others down. We don’t want to try something, fall and not be able to get back up. So we live in a trance in our daily lives until we die. Hoping something will happen, a stroke of luck that will set us free.

But the fears are so detrimental because if actually pursued what you were meant to do, it could actually create a positive externality in society. For example, you want so dearly to be an actress, but you are a wiz at science. You could go on to become the Meryl Streep of physicians. Who knows, it could formulate into a Nobel Prize for Science. But we become afraid, or disinterested in that thing that resonates with us. You have people who become school teachers who are better litigators, or engineers who could be the next Vincent van Gogh. Missing the opportunity to unlock that talent is of great tragedy.

It’s a tragedy because people look at the top people in their field or another field and say, “How did you do it?” As if you’re this special human on Earth. The reality is they unlocked their talent because they are self-aware. It’s hard to describe because it is a non-verbal oh, ok moment. What do I mean by non-verbal oh ok. Meaning, something will happen in life that you will come in contact with, and you go, “Oh,” or you say to yourself, “Oh, ok, this is what this is.” It’s how your brain processes information. Once you realize how your brain processes information, you will become more self-aware. Then your thing, or talent will unlock on it’s own. Then people will say, “How did you do that?” It will be hard to described. You will want to explain, but it becomes difficult because unlocking that thing can be natural. Natural occurrences can be tough to explain at times how to perform.

In the end, talents are something all people in life possess. Yet so many miss their window to capitalize. For a lot of people it’s fear of pursuing out of failure or letting down others. But when you waste your talent you let down more people than if you don’t pursue. You let down a potential generation that could take a cue from you and build from there. But then there are the people who never unlock their inner knowledge. They spend their entire lives not knowing themselves. So they are unable to succeed in life and ultimately die not knowing and not going anywhere.
