THROUGH SIMILAR EYES: HOW WILL THE FUTURE LOOK TO MY GENERATION IN OLD AGE

“What will tomorrow through my eyes look like compared to them today?”

You ever wonder what the world looks like through the eyes of a person whose been on Earth a very long time? And when I say long, I mean someone who is in their 90’s or even 100 years old. My great grandmother was born near the turn of the century in the early 1900’s. And to be exact, it was 1914; so I wonder what did life look to her around the time of her getting close to 90. SheImage result for 20th century died in the year 2010, and that must have been some intense life. The politicians she witnessed take office, the multiple ways in which we communicate, the social movements, and the way technology has made leaps and bounds. So I ask of all those millennials out there like me, “What will life look like to those of us who make it to that point in life?”

Just this past week, I had the opportunity to test a VR (virtual reality) headset that someone I know designed. And just by observing through this headset, you can feel how much life is going to change once the technology is really to scale. You’ll get a chance to experience life in the past through the use of this headset. Related imageMeaning, technology will be so good that we can recreate moments of the past and live them through these innovative machines. Not just the technology, but what will the state of relationships look like by this time. If I live to 90 to 100 years old, you are going to have people who have been married for 40, 50, and 60 years who met on Tinder or some other dating site. It sounds crazy today, but will be totally fine in the future. Members of the LGBTQ community raising children and adopting will be a non-conversation point. And I will be of a generation that has experienced what we read about in books.

That means I will be old enough to have gotten a chance to vote for America’s first Black president. Which most likely by this time will have been so much of an after thought that the conversation will be archaic. I will have remembered when the White House was illuminated in the rainbow colors to mark the day when gays had the right to vote. I will remember events that took place that rocked the country such as September 11th terror attacks and even Image result for 9/11the Oklahoma City bombing which claimed the lives of so many young children. Natural disasters such as Hurricane Andrew, Katrina, and Sandy. I will be one of the last generations born in the decades known as the 1980’s and the generations born who remember the 1900’s as a century in time. I will even remember the first social media ways in which we first started to communicate. Meaning, I will be the last of the age group who remember when the internet was created for the public.

In the end, living on this planet for a long time gives you a sense of understanding about civilizations that no one else has experienced. What everyone else had to read about, you lived through and witnessed. So you will become almost like a form of entertainment for people to come and ask questions. People will also on average live longer, so there will be more centennials than any other time period. Now I can’t guarantee that I will be that age upon death, but what a time a Earth that must be to experience so much in life.

SO UNFAIR, YET OH SO FAIR: WHAT DOES LIFE REALLY MEAN?

Image result for LIFE

“What is your meaning of it?”

Life is unfair! I finally got life figured out! Life sucks! These are the statements that people make when asked about life. So many say that you have to live your whole life to actually figure it out. But do you really need your entire life to figure out life. But let’s be clear about something regarding what really is life. Are you talking the living or talking just life in general? Because we use this interchangeably, but both have different meanings. The word life is existing, it’s what I am doing in this moment typing. Or it’s what you’re doing in the moment reading this topic. But the idea of living on this planet is a whole other ball game. So what is so tough about life on Earth?

Well, for starters, let’s observe what life is. As a life form, we are Carbon based that has taken just over one million years to fully evolve. We’re still evolving, but the change is something we can’t take notice to in the present state. Our life expectancy is 40 years of age, but due to scientific research we live to be 78 years of age.  So to say that life is not fair, just does not resonate with me. What is so unfair about the idea that humans only have a one in seven million chance of life anyways. And if you don’t know what I mean by one in seven million, only one sperm will fertilize an egg in seven million. With those odds, life is a great existence. Now, on the other hand life is hard and life is unfair.

But let’s observe what it means to have a hard life. You wake up every morning, and go to your day job. After work, you come home eat and watch television. Monday through Friday is your routine, then Friday evenings you hang out. Saturdays are lounge or errand days, while Sundays prepare you for Monday. The majority of people on Earth will live like this until they die. So to them, an existence might be rather mundane. But that only tells me the their daily regimen. What about if they have utilities piling up, rent to pay, mortgages, loans, and personal expenses. The average person struggles financially, meaning you’re more than likely not working a job you like. And this is where the saying life is unfair comes into play.

But let’s pause for a second. This in itself only tells me people’s hardships. It does not explain why life is unfair. That’s because in reality life is not unfair; life is very fair, too fair to be real about it. What is unfair is the aspect of dealing with people. If every human on Earth vanished and you were the only one left, what would be your hardest struggle. A lot of people would say survival. But you now have unlimited fruits, vegetables, water, resources for shelter and clothing. How can life be a struggle? Because people regulate food and water. I live near the Atlantic Ocean, and if I were hungry and needed food, it would be a crime to fish from the water. So most people would say life isn’t fair. But life is the waters, life is the sea life. There is nothing unfair about that. It’s people who established a gaming commission so I can’t fish.

In the end, we feel that so much around us is unfair. Yet the Earth has an abundance of resources. The fact that you don’t have the access is not that life is unfair. People have created means of making it virtually impossible to gain access to those resources.  So the way to thrive throughout life is not to think of life as unfair. But if you can manage to navigate the minefield that is us, humans on Earth, then you’ll be fine.

EXCEPTING YOUR END: HOW WE COPE WITH DEATH

“Are you really ready for the end?”

For the longest, people have tried to find methods of coping with the idea that we as people will eventually meet our demise. No one, no matter how long you live, is ready for the time when they will die. We all love existing and hate even thinking about a world where we don’t exist. So for thousands of years we have sought to try to understand something. Anything that will point us in a direction leading to our end. Religion has its viewpoint and science has its viewpoint. But even with both views, all of us walk away with the same feeling. We either fear dying and/for we don’t want to die.

Well why, why do we fear the end of our lives. None of the past frightens us, yet we are totally afraid of all the future. Me my self, I was not afraid of the year 1920 so why am I afraid of the year 2120. I won’t be around which creeps me out. But what will happen once we leave this Earth. Is there a collection of energy that goes somewhere, or do we past and that is it? Do we ascend to heaven as the bible speaks about, or do we disintegrate to nothingness? The idea of this being the end for so many people is scary. But how do we cope with the idea of an ending. Let’s look at a few ways people cope with themselves passing away.

The bible is written about us ending and going to heaven. Once we die in this world, we pass along into another. The Christian text calls it the land of milk and honey. In the Lord’s house there are many mansions. This sounds great if you’re a person of the Christian faith. Furthermore, if you belong to any other group, they have their own beliefs regarding the end of life. Yet there are the skeptics. These are the people who come into the loop and present to the world their alternative facts. To them they have a more scientific means of explaining the end of ones’ life.

The science community aims at looking at humans as a carbon based life form that will come to an end as well. Unlike the religious community, science theorizes that nothing supernatural happens as the body dies. Carbon is released from our bodies like any other dead organism back into the atmosphere just as with plants and animals. This is of benefit to us and any other plant and animal life on Earth. So, to them, this is it, so make the best of it. Because when the lights go out, they’re out for good. Anything other than that is seen as nonsense and should be viewed as such.

In the end, what will it take to get people to cope? Will there ever come a time when people can cope with their end? Or will we forever be locked in our emotions about what happens after we die on this Earth? There is one thing that people everywhere can agree upon. Is that this body we call ours will not be here forever. And I don’t mean just me in the moment. I mean the Earth as we know it has an expiration date. Eventually the universe will reach maximum growth before it ends itself. And that’s life, everything has a beginning and an end. How all of ours will turn out is unknown. So for now, we live. Go to sleep and wake up, until the day comes where those eyes won’t open again.
