IT REMEMBERS: HOW MARKETERS ARE GETTING OUR ATTENTION

business, close-up, commerce

“Type, type, pop up later.”

how they target

Ever been on the internet, going through a loop, looking at random things. Well, better yet, have you been on the internet consistently looking at the same items. Then you forget about what you were looking at, and next thing you know, the items you had always been looking at appear in the margins of the screen. They appear because you have been scrolling for so long. Marketers pay very close attention to this because everything is connected to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. And connected because people elect to sign into their accounts using their social media in multiple locations. Now there is an open access into your life.

where is it all going

What happens when you don’t buy something? Is all this information kept on file for days, months, years? In reality it is kept for as long as organizations want to keep it. And after a while they dump the information. This all serves a purpose in case you break the law. Then there is a trail of all the things you used to look up. But most people don’t break the law where information sought after. We have no clue really what is being done with our information after searching and searching. But what if the information can be accessed by someone more important. Individuals such as your employers.

from marketers to the workplace

Sounds crazy, and very invasive, but what is stopping your employers from knowing your key strokes. Are there any laws that will stop them from doing such a thing. Now there are laws. But what will happen in the future? Employers reaching out to marketers who are known to patronize Facebook and Instagram. Then these companies that hire can pull up information on what the potential person they are hiring have been searching. This way they can see what their potential hire does with their spare time. This is even worse then Facebook selling people’s information without knowledge. But it’s not far-fetched to think employers would go to these lengths. Now, I don’t see it ever happening, but what we don’t know can hurt us.

reality is

The main reason marketers want your information is to sell you products. Giving your information to employers can be too much of a legal risk for them and the employer. And the vast majority of people don’t commit crimes. So dealing with the government is not much of an option either. For now, it’s all about dollars; and information is big money.

INTELLECTUAL CIVILIZATIONS ON THE RISE: HOW THE MIND MAKES US AWARE AND LESS HAPPY

“Our minds are growing, but it’s hurting us.”

Unlike the people of the past, we are becoming more and more aware of our surroundings. We are becoming more and more aware of who we are as a people as well. Yet, the more we become aware, the more depressed we become. But it’s not our fault, it’s the basis of what we are as people. Human curiosity and advancement causes this to happen. Meaning, we want advancements in medicine and science as well as technology, so long as it does not interfere with social norms and religion. But you can’t have an advanced civilization and not challenge these beliefs in the process. Because the advancements heightens the mind and you become more aware. Then you challenge the beliefs of the past.

What are some things that we have become more aware about. For starters, relationships, and when I say relationships I mean marriage. The more you learn about what it means the more you get turned off. People say you do it for love, but you don’t need to marry someone to love them. Marriage is not a molecule or virus that takes form. If two people go to work and come home to raise children, do you really “need” marriage. You water, food, clothing, and shelter, not marriage. But society has constructed our minds to make us think it does when in reality nothing happens. You go to work come home, go to work and come home. So why do we need it? Well, in the past women couldn’t work. So she had to marry a man so she could be cared for. But if he died or left the family, she was screwed. So laws had to be created stating that a woman is entitled to something if the marriage shall end. So marriage is not love, it’s entering a contract that aids in protecting a woman in case the man leave or pass away. The relationship is the love.

But is marriage the only way that we have become mentally aware and more unhappy? What about friendships? A friend is supposed to be another person who you enter a non-intimate relationship with whom you share common bond with in life. Our awareness of friendships have been relegated to likes on social media. Instead of conversations we text message each other. There use to be time you remembered people’s telephone numbers, and now we have contacts we touch to call them. Our awareness have caused us to take people who are true friends for granted because if I have ten good friends I hang with and you have 100k people who follow you on Instagram, then you’re more important with the 100k. So instead of building relationships, we’re more interested in the statistical aspect of building; quantity over quality.

Now, we still haven’t reached to the full extent why higher levels of awareness has made us smarter, yet more lonely and unhappy. And the main reason is that in today’s society unlike any other time in history, we are constantly bombarded and inundated with information. Unlike our parents, we don’t have to wait until we reach a certain age to understand life. There is enough information to know everything now. So much so, we consume, consume, consume, then dump. We’ve become human locust, where we eat all the resources. Once there is nothing left, we dump the place where we got our resources. It’s the reason why Google is such a big deal because there are billions of pages of information. No one human can find out everything in Google, which is why they are such an attractive organization; unlimited information.

In the end, people of an older generation question, what’s the downside of too much information. And with anything, there is the upside and downside. The downside is that it tends to make us more depressed once we figure the truth behind what we’re looking for in life. It can also make us more detached from reality. But there is an upside to the information. Those in power will have to work even harder to do their jobs because it’s becoming too hard to trick the masses. With apps, social media, and access to more documents than the government has access to, they at times are last to know information. So there is a forced transparency with how they operate. But whatever the outcome, we will do as past generations have done when met with adversity. Adjust to the changes or die as a result of not being able to cope in an ever-changing society.

RELIGION GONE BYE BYE: MILLENNIALS DEPARTURE FROM RELIGION

“Why are young people moving from religious to non-religious?”

I read articles on a regular that talk about how religion is losing it’s place in American society. Everyone has their viewpoint on why, but there isn’t just one reason. But this topic is why are the young generations moving away from it at such a rapid pace? Even a community as deeply rooted as the African American community, there still seems to be this disconnect. I have a number of reasons I can think of just off the top of my head. Lose of religious belief comes from: the information age, religion’s grip on society, and the willingness to always expect forgiveness.

The information age has played a large role in the decline of religion. In our parents generation they knew little. But the fact that we know more makes us curious about things that are readily available. Things that we were taught are not possible are really possible. Meaning, our parents would tell us, keep living life you’ll see. But with so much information readily available, we don’t have to wait until we get their age. We get it all now, what took them into their middle age to get, with the click of a button, we can grasp hold of everything that took them decades to learn. So we feel and think old in our youth. Which forces us to now ask questions about beliefs that contradict each other. Contradictions can really effect religion because the more contradictions the more it seems less deity and more man driven.

But it’s not all information, what about the role it has in the control of our lives. I remember when Kim Davis, city clerk refused to issue a marital license for a gay couple because she said them getting married was against her belief. But the idea that a woman don’t have to fact check with you before making a decision concerning your life is troubling. A young demographic says fine, believe what you want, but interfering with others lives is problematic. But there is some fear in people like Kim Davis that was exposing. Because for one, the Confederate flag flies in Kentucky. I highly doubt that’s of Christian sentiment. But also, she exposed her own doubt. Because if her belief was real you don’t intervene, let God deal with it. What she fears is the idea that everything she believed was a lie. She was raised that’s not possible. So seeing that’s possible puts her faith in question. And that’s why people want control because you don’t want your faith in question by your own self.

But a lot of people say love and forgive her. Which brings me to my next theory which is the forgiveness. Is there ever a time to not forgive? Are we expected to say let God deal with it all the time? The expectations to constantly say, “I forgive you, I forgive you,” has become way too expected. The police officer in the shooting death of South Carolina man Walter Scott was caught up in a mistrial. But he was on tape clearing killing Walter, an unarmed man. But Walter’s mom came on TV and spoke God and the Bible. Some loved it, but there was an age push back. Because young Blacks were not as forgiving. The idea that someone can take a life and nothing, you just wake up each day and deal has become seen as irrational.

In the end, whether you agree with why it’s declining, it’s rapidly going away. Especially as science gets better and better. Religion is regional in its creation (meaning the stories are of the region of their time) and constant, but the world changes; and man gets smarter. The smarter we get the more irrational religion becomes. But there is a passage that is interesting about such changes in the bible. “He who increases knowledge, increases sorrow on the land.” The smarter we become the more religion disappears, but the more we become slaves to a new vulnerability.
