MERRY XMAS: WHAT DOES TODAY MEAN TO YOU

Christmas wishing card

“Seasons Greetings.”

Today is Christmas, which is arguably the biggest holiday in America. A day where families across the country sit in their living rooms and open gifts. In addition to gifts, there will be dinners, movies being watched, and sports on television. Now let me ask you, what does today mean to you? Is Christmas a day for gift giving, or is today the day for you to reflect on all the good things that have happened thus far in your life? Because as with the gift giving, there are people across the country without the ability to buy gifts for loved ones. Not only purchasing gifts, some won’t even have a meal for themselves to consume. Yet if you look throughout the history of Christmas, giving gifts have been something new on this holiday. For the longest people made their gifts for each other. There was more thought that went into buying gifts.

So why is everything about buying the best gift today? Is it that the true spirit of Christmas has been lost? Or is it that Christmas has evolved like everything else in society? Maybe this is the evolution of Christmas. Because as I walked the streets of New York, you could barely see the sidewalk below you there were so many feet walking these streets this holiday season. Everyone was in the Christmas spirit. Now notice I said the Christmas spirit. A lot of people don’t view this type of shopping as the Christmas spirit. They view it as nothing more than another snatch and grab. A more greed and shallow driven holiday that was meant for sharing love and religious sentiment. But like I said before, everything in our society evolves, even our holidays. So what will the future of our Christmas season look like as time progress.

In the end, we all have our different interpretations for what today means. When I was a child, my sister and I received gifts and talked amongst ourselves. Then later on, we would go to my great grandmother’s house for dinner. But since everyone have grown and gotten married, time is now split between so many different families there isn’t this big family dinner. But as far as the celebration of Christmas, who knows, it might go back to its roots as life becomes more expensive in America.

EAT TO YOUR HEART CONTENT: HOW WE BINGE ON DAYS LIKE TODAY AND MEANING BEHIND IT

Image result for 4TH OF JULY

“Comfort food is the best food.”

Today is the 4th of July, marking the 241st year that the Declaration of Independence was signed. But this topic today is not about the celebration. Today’s topic is about all the food that will be consumed from cookouts today. We all look forward to the holidays because it gives us an excuse to binge on all the food we want to eat. As a kid growing up, my mother would take my sister and I to the parade. We would sit there until the parade was nearly over, then head to the cookout at a family member’s house. And you can just about guess the food that lined the picnic tables.

I’m talking all kinds of good eating: Catfish, meatballs, fried chicken, baked chicken, pork chops, meatloaf, turkey, honey ham, brats, BBQ ribs, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, cabbage, sweet rolls, black eyed peas, mashed Related imagepotatoes, fried okra, yams, sweet potatoes, corn bread. The meat would be smothered in two to three types of gravy; soda, Kool aid, juice, sweet tea, some brews, and water would be the beverages of choice. And it didn’t stop there, you can’t forget about the desserts: banana pudding, chocolate pies, sweet potato pie, lemon pies, egg pies, German chocolate cake, pound cake, and ice cream.

The above food was the meals my family would consume on this holiday. But now that I am an adult, I don’t look at the holidays the same anymore. Not that they are not important, it’s just that living on my own, cooking on these days are not as special. I could always go to visit family, yet it’s not the same. Now most would say, start your own family. But I am far from ready for a family of my own. I think back to when I was growing up and the meals the family would have together. As time went on, people married, moved away, and some even passed away. Now, it seems far less special as when I was young.

And I guess that’s why these once great times to eat together have changed. There were children that used to fill the premises, and adults as well. But eating as a family, especially on holidays takes on new meanings. That Image result for soul food desserts banana puddingfeeling of being stuffed and sitting back with your pants zipper undone is not quite there anymore. Now the portions have gotten cut down because we have to live after the cookout. Fewer children and more teens who themselves are thinking about moving outside the home town for college. So now, there are middle aged to elderly adults left.

And in the end, the 4th of July reminds me of the great meals as a child. The firework show, even consuming small portions of leftovers the next day. You know, I never looked at the 4th as an Independence holiday, rather a special day family came together to have a feast.

GHOST OF LIFE’S PAST: WHEN CONFRONTED WITH YOUR PRIOR PERSONAL SITUATIONS

Image result for GHOST OF PAST

“Do you wish you could take something back  from a past situation?”

Have you ever experienced an event or relationship in your past that you wish you could correct? A situation that has haunted you that you might have forgotten, but would like to find out the full story. What happened? Why did it happen? Was it worth losing so much? How were you effected? Who else was effected in the process? Confronting your past to correct wrongs that were done is very difficult. How do you go about preparing yourself to come to grips with your past? I have been thinking about this because of the Christmas holiday. Why, Scrooge was always a big movie during this time.

Well why was Scrooge such an iconic story to be told? It’s because too often people are able to relate to the person who either don’t have family or don’t want to be around friends or family. But Scrooge was a guy who spent his life being tough especially around this time of year. A year when people conduct in so much shopping, yet the people who worked for him would rather spend time with friends and family. Yet Scrooge could care less about the spending time with family or any other circumstance where family was involved. He never had one, didn’t care to have one, and wasn’t ever going to have one.

During the movie he is approached by different ghost that make him see what he has missed out on in life as well as lives he negatively impacted. In the end, he was able to finally indulge in the Christmas spirit. A book yes, a movie yes, but there are real life Scrooges. But not just holiday Scrooges, they have negatively impacted people on a daily basis. Once that relationship has been hurt, how do you now go back and correct those mistakes. Or better yet, what happens when you’re forced to confront that past mistake. This could mean reopening old wounds that have healed for a resolution.

Have you ever cheated on a boyfriend/girlfriend? Not just in any fashion, but such where it has effected them moving forward with dating. When you see them again there’s a bit of an uncomfortable situation. It’s uncomfortable because you know what you did to them was wrong. Instead of manning up sometimes people just ignore it. But what about other situations more serious like hurting someone in which a law has been broken. How do you deal with the person, that is if the person is still around?

In the end, we have to be able to face our past. It’s tough, but we have to do it. Because it is too often  at times you’re approached with it. So confront it because the person is not guaranteed to always be here. Because not confronting it could turn to personal resentment.

FAMILY TIES: WHY WE’VE GONE IN SEPERATE DIRECTIONS

“Why have people become so distant?”

You ever see those 1950’s images of the family sitting around the table having a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner? Everyone is smiling from ear to ear. People pass food and/or gifts as they indulge in giving and food. Well, note I said the 1950’s because those days are so far behind us. Well why, why have families become so distant over the recent years for the holidays? There are a few factors: work related, family issues, and distant living.

First you ask yourselves, what is this thing with work related? Well work has gotten in the way over the years. Living in society is so expensive that it requires people to now work during the holidays. Everything used to be closed for Thanksgiving and Christmas, now businesses are open. People need the money, so they are opting out of visiting family. You now have to make so many decisions in life, the family or the rent. Catching up on old times or utilities. You have to make some tough choices in this world so not visiting family is something they have to understand.

But it’s not always about the job. What about the families that just flat out don’t speak to each other? This is a reality as well in our world today. When we’re young we are close to family, but as you get older you take on different views and ways of life. These ways can sometimes conflict with family causing people to not see each other. Another reason can be that the backbone of the family dies. This person was someone that was able to bring everyone together. But since they have passed away everyone go their separate directions.

Then again, it’s not all about fighting and work. Some people live far away from family. If you live in Los Angeles and family is in San Diego, great. But if family live in Miami and you’re in Los Angeles, well I’ll send you a postcard. Besides the sheer distance, the cost can run pretty high when trying to travel long distances. We go months, some people years without seeing immediate family. It’s nothing personal, but we just live way too far away.

See in the end, there are a lot of reasons why people no longer spend time with family. Some people are loners others would rather just relax. Whatever the case families aren’t like they used to be. A lot of it has to do with relationships as well. When you get married and have children, you see less of family. They split time with their spouses family, but also at home as well. However you view why families have parted always reach out because you never know when you’ll see them again.
