GIVING STARS AWAY: WHY THE WALK OF FAME IS NOT AS MONUMENTAL AS IT ONCE WERE

“Their value is just not the same.”

the walk of fame

So many people in American society have always wanted to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But for the performers that have been immortalized on the walk, it’s something much bigger. Anyone in the arts know that having your name enshrined in the ground in Los Angeles is a big deal. But over the recent years, the value of that has diminished.

far from reality

No one would have thought that someone like one, if not all the Kardashians would be considered for a star. Or better yet, Perez Hilton, known for being a celebrity blogger. Because when you think of having a star, you think of all the contributions that the entertainer has made to the industry. Yet, you hear these names brought up in conversations.

But not just the reality personalities, also people who are entertainers, yet they have not been in the business that long. I saw where Jennifer Lawrence name is being considered. She has been in some pretty phenomenal films in the recent years, but I still think it’s too soon. I want to see over the next ten to fifteen years what she has to offer.

butterflies

Still, there is this great feeling when walking across your favorite performer, or probably given one yourself. Because now, for the rest of your life, and even after, your name is there in concrete. People like Marilyn Monroe is still a major draw for people around the globe. As for myself do I care if I ever were to get one, no really, but I would be lying if I said I would turn it down.

FAME: WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE DESPERATE FOR IT

Related image

“We all want the good, yet reject the bad.”

FAME

So many people in America today are desperate for fame. So desperate they are willing to go to extreme lengths, even if it’s at the cost of them losing themselves in the process. And what is it all about; is it worth it? And for so many, it’s not because we love our privacy. But for others it’s the cost of doing what you do.

Now, that does not mean that all famous people are these fame, attention seeking individuals. I am referring to the people who throw their children out there for the sake of a check. Or the reality families that always lead to a family breakdown somehow.

requirements

It times past you had to have some sort of talent to be considered famous. You couldn’t just throw yourself out there and expect people to just bite. You to have something that made you attractive for people to buy into; or they weren’t having it. Now, anyone with an Instagram following is a famous person. No true talent is required to have a high level of notoriety.

psychological ramifications

You think to yourself, who in the world would want to be famous. And when I say that, you have a lot of people who are good at what they do. And they become very well-known as a result. Meaning, I don’t think Mark Zuckerberg was seeking fame, but he is a famous person. I don’t think Michael Jordan was seeking fame, but he is famous.

People who seek out fame in life, the people who always need to show the world their lifestyle have something else going on mentally. Because the constant validation from the outside world, when it’s supposed to come from the inside out says a lot. It’s not good to be alive, everyone has to know every second of the day, what you have and where you live.

downfall

Will it ultimately be the downfall of society; the answer is no. Because the vast majority of people are not seeking fame in their lives. They just want to go to work and come home safely. But for the attention seekers, they continue to trek on as well.

RAPE CULTURE: THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL OF HOLLYWOOD

Image result for hollywood

“Who would have thought there is an actual culture behind it.”

In the recent news, we have been hearing about all the sexual assault allegations directed at the Hollywood elite. Ranging from actors to top executives, all who have been accused and admitted to sexual assaulting women and even children in some cases. Many thought the worst was over with all the women that came out over Bill Cosby. Then Harvey Weinstein victims came out, and from there on it has been a constant barrage of women sharing their stories of sexual assault and rape at the hands of powerful men in Hollywood. And the reason besides this being Hollywood, why it’s such a news story, is because of the way famous public figures try to police everyone else. These men and women spent the past year and a half attacking the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump for his comments. Now they’re silent on the allegations in their industry.

These are the same people who say there is a rape culture issue in America, but they are surrounded by a culture of rape. And it has gone on for decades in the film and television business, with very few people coming out against it. So if this is something that is this pervasive in the industry, how do you change the way business is conducted. Because at this point it’s part of the identity of an industry. And if this is something that is the identity, then how do you change it? You can’t change this overnight, it takes a long time. But the Golden Globes and the Oscars are two and half months away. Are the comedians that host these award shows going to address it or remain silent? Since everything else is addressed in the industry that is social or political. My best guess is that they won’t, which will further add to the already feeling of disconnect.

But then again, is this just a Hollywood identity? If you’re under the impression that this is only a one industry problem you are wrong. Women can tell you horror stories abut men in politics, corporate America, the medical field, and even education. Yet the men who are constantly getting caught are guys who come from an era where this was totally acceptable. A time when men were told, “Hey, look at how she’s dressed; it’s an invite.” And these men are so stuck in their mind-frame from that time on top of having so much influence, they don’t realize the change in time. They know you can get in trouble quicker, but yet still, the full concept is not grasped. In the end, who knew that the fighters against this rape culture was part of the biggest culture of rape. I don’t see the business changing anytime soon. But it has to start now because what has been done has changed the game forever.

A MOVE IN A NEW DIRECTION: HOW THE INTERNET IS KILLING THE ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS

board, cinema, cinematography

“A decline that they are not prepared for.”

Looking over the recent statistics on films in theaters, I saw that numbers appeared to be down. Maybe that’s the reason why these movies that come out later in the year around the campaigning months for Golden Globes and Oscars take place. Movies might not be able to stand on their own anymore in theaters. And a major reason for that is the internet. The internet is such a machine that you don’t need to patronize your favorite show or movies anymore. One reason being that there is more variety and the other is that you don’t have to leave the comforts of your home. So what will happen to the state of movies as time progress? Because theaters make their money by films being debut in theaters. But if people are not coming to theaters to see movies, that smells death for them.

Hollywood can always adjust to the changes, but not the theater venues. That’s unless these theater venues decide to get themselves a platform for films, and then they are in the game. Not only in the game, they don’t have to go through Hollywood, and you can go straight to the distributor as a producer. And that in turn, might be death to a lot of studios. Because everyone who is interested in making films or television is in the game now. But they are not running out to Los Angeles like years ago, but they are building their own platforms. Some teenager with a couple of friends can now be the boss of their own machine if they are willing to put in the time. Because we are coming into what is really known as the open market. And the market is the market, they don’t care who they are buying from. As long as you give them a good product and/or service.

I myself, am pursuing screenwriting and Amazon has a platform for people to submit their screenplays. And if the company is interested, they will offer an amount for the script, or even your series through Amazon studios. And for a company that just bought Whole Foods for a whopping $13.5 billion dollars, they can afford your $200,000 script. Meanwhile the average screenwriter makes only $100,000 in Hollywood. Oh, and I forgot to mention you don’t need an agent to do so. Agents and managers usually take their 20% collectively right off the top. Now you don’t have to split anything if you are good at what you do. What’s the purpose of going through the whole process of trying to find an agent. They now are in a position where they have to come and find talent themselves. So guess what, they are now on the chopping block as it pertains to the business.

In the end, you see the red carpet events and the celebrities dress to the nine. But internally they know what’s really going on. It’s the reason these superhero movies keep getting made in the business. Corporations run studios; and the studios are allotted only a certain amount of funding to make movies. That means, spend $100 million on the next epic film and then make $800 – $900 million in theaters worldwide. The venue get their 60% cut, and distribution or distributors gets their 40%. You’re talking $320 million to $360 million for the film coming back to the distributor/s. And since the customer never says a word and keeps spending, why not keep making them. So remake and reboot and series until the customers are tired and then move on from there.
